Hey guys, I know nobody's heard from me in for-fucking-ever, and I'm sorry for that. Honestly, I've been taking a much-needed break from social media for my mental health... and focusing on my novel!

I wish that I was returning on a more pleasant note, but honestly, I'm in a pretty desperate place right now. My hours at work were basically halved for five weeks straight and I've been dealing with several health issues (nothing too serious, but enough to need treatment and miss some more time at work), and I can't afford my bills this month.

All this to say: If anyone would like a fanfic commission, my Ko-fi is still always open even though I don't usually do much to advertise it. Every little bit helps, and I appreciate anyone who helps out more than I can say!

Hey! You mentioned you got accepted as a translation volunteer manager a while back! Were you a translation volunteer before that? Could you share how the selection is performed? I'm super curious and maybe interested in trying to volunteer in the future!

Of course! I'll be honest, I don't remember many of the details because that was several years ago, but I do remember that aside from the initial application, there's a panel interview. It's all done online, of course, and at least back then, it was just via chat, not video call. It's very casual, with both professional and fandom questions. I was never a translation volunteer because I'm not fluent enough in any languages other than English, but I was involved in some of the interviews for translation volunteers, and they ran much the same way.

Overall, they just want to know how much translation experience you have, whether you'd be a good fit for the team, and whether you'll be able to commit the necessary hours (which should be listed on the description of whatever position you're thinking of applying for). Try to relax, I promise they don't want anyone to be anxious about the interview and it's not like a super serious job interview. And if you don't get accepted, try not to take it too harshly. There are many different reasons that it could be for, one of which simply being that some of the language teams are ALWAYS full. Also, a good thing to keep in mind that we sometimes saw people misunderstand--the translation volunteers don't translate fanfic. You can do that all on your own without being a volunteer, just ask permission first from the author of course. Instead, translation volunteers translate things like site documentation (ie, tutorials), news articles, and Elections information. So make sure that's what you're interested in before you apply.

this is the second fucking year in a row someone has tried to pull this crap. but if you're still on the fence about it (though fair warning, I am not copying everything she wrote as a response, which you can read on the OTW website):

Would you be in favor of creating a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee? Why or why not? I see no reason creating another committee would help anything in light of the continued staffing issues, and see several ways it could hurt. Lumping nonwhite, and non-English-speaking, and non-American volunteers together in one committee is just tokenism with a bow on top. Those experiences are not singular or universal. The DEI consultant to be hired by the organization will be able to speak to this far better than I can. The cost of becoming a member/voting in elections is prohibitive for many users, particularly disabled, international and POC ones. Do you have any ideas about how this could be improved to make the otw more inclusive and less privileged? No.

So, uh... Turns out my grandma is still a homophobic bitch, even after living with two openly queer grandkids for months. We got into a big fight yesterday, and then she tried to turn it around and started screaming and swearing (which she NEVER does) about how I’M the one being prejudiced, because I supposedly don’t love her because of her beliefs.

I ended up coming to my mother’s house in tears. Have been doing my best to avoid my ‘father,’ but there’s only so long I can keep that up for and I am... SO fucking tired. I’m tired of finding out that various members of my family hate me, I’m tired of having to bounce from house to house because nowhere is home, I’m... I’m just tired. And I don’t know wtf I’m gonna do for the next few weeks, where I’m gonna live, because I STILL haven’t heard back about the city’s process that we’re waiting on so I can finally move in to the Seattle apartment that has technically been mine for a month and a half now.

I’m just tired.

Went to Bebe Rexha’s concert last night. It was pretty fun, and she performed “Gateway Drug,” which made me really happy for... probably obvious reasons, if you’ve read my fics lol. Got to be close to the stage for Zolita’s set and met her afterwards and got a pic and autograph on her merch, too. (The merch was booty shorts that literally say “gay ass”... It’s amazing XD) The experience AFTER the concert was a fucking nightmare, though. After walking ~4 miles throughout the day around Seattle, I had to walk another 1.5 to get back to the parking garage my car was in... half of which was up a very steep hill. And I somehow got lost in the last 4 blocks and ended up wandering around for an extra 10 minutes. And when I got there, the fucking garage was locked! Even though they had evening hours of 7pm-5am listed, it was apparently only actually OPEN 6am-10pm. Which I somehow completely missed when I was reading the sign. And their “emergency after hours access” number wasn’t answered when I called twice, and my call never got returned after I left a voicemail. So mom started driving all the way down to pick me up. But then a resident saw me loitering around and called security on me... Luckily, even though the guard scolded me, he still let me in and out, so I called mom and she turned around halfway there. Saved me a looottt of trouble that that person called security, because I would’ve had to go back to Seattle AGAIN at 6am to pick up my car, and I might’ve gotten a ticket because my parking pass was only good until 11:20pm. I am tired and sore af, but at least I have my car.

Gotta remind myself not to overdo it when looking at beautiful art. There’s this special golden zone where you’re the most inspired and motivated by other people’s art but it’s so easy to slip into overwhelm and get demotivated :(

So…I have this theory in my head that someone might like.

One day one of my relatives decided to open a cafe near the station where I live. He prepared the equipment, bought the materials, and picked the perfect location. I mean, he thought it was perfect. There were almost no similar establishments in the area, so in his opinion this meant he would have no competition. All the people living near the station would come running happily to him yelling “finally some coffee,” right?

Wrong.

His café stood empty for three months and then closed.

Then he tried again, but this time he chose a place where there were many other cafes like his. There were plenty of prettier and more developed competitors around, but his business still thrived.

Some time after all this happened, he explained to me why this was the case. He said that if there are a lot of cafes somewhere, it means that people there like to eat good food. And the more people there are, the more cafes there are.

The funny thing is that this applies to many other areas and professions.

If you see a lot of things made for people in front of you, it means there are a lot of people nearby who really need those things.

Now, when I see a lot of art for a theme/fandom/character, the first thought that comes to my mind is “damn, there’s LOTS of people who really need art. Who want more art. Who will definitely be happy to see my art.”

It doesn’t take away from the difficulties described in the original post, but it’s what helps me stay positive and productive and absorb tons of other people’s art at the same time:)

Their art just reminds me that people need my work
