What Is A GOOD Audio Engineer? And Why Do Artists Need Them?
AUDIO ENGINEERING involves transferring sound from one place to the other. It is based on the recording arts as well as sciences that permit the capture and consequently the playback of sound. There is always an original source of sound such as a rapper or a singer, their sound is picked through a microphone. The sound is then converted to electricity, at this point changes as to where the sound can be channeled to, what can be done to it and what it sounds like can be made. An audio engineer is usually charged with the responsibility of preparing a studio environment that is ideal, having meetings with client and delivery of client needs. Audio engineers are expected to accurately record the performance of a musician and to be able to provide them with a high quality reproduction of their sound. Basically, an audio engineer/sound engineer is a professional who is primarily trained to work with the mechanics of recording, mixing and ultimately reproducing sound. This article will focus on an audio engineer, what they do and what they know. What they do Audio engineers work with all the technical aspects of sound during the recording process, mixing process and lastly in the reproduction process. They often help musicians and record producers to assist and give their musical work the kind of sound they were hoping to ultimately achieve. Subfields of audio engineering There is a good number of subfields of audio engineering that an individual can specialize in, they include the following: Studio engineer – This field involves working closely with producers in a studio setting. Assistant engineer – This field is also characterized by a studio setting but these individuals are often apprentices to studio engineers that work or own large facilities. Recording engineer – This field of audio engineering focusses on sound recording. Mix engineer – This field focusses on the mixing together of different tracks so as to mesh and a hybrid track. Mastering engineer – A master engineer is responsible for smoothing over the results of mix engineers so as to make the final product complete. Live sound engineer – This engineer works at live events to ensure that the sound is of high quality and the appropriate value. Systems engineer – This subfield focuses on the management of the whole experience of sound especially at performances that are held live. Systems engineers are charged with managing both monitor and sound engineers. Sound Designer - They are usually familiar with combining sounds or know what sounds are needed to make a certain sound. They could make drum kits or any sound effects and get very close to what they are trying to achieve. Foley Is a Perfect example of sound design its used in every movie matching the film with sounds such as foot stomps, fires, thunder, punch and kick sounds in kung fu movies. It's a very Fun and interesting topic. Quality tips for audio engineers
Audio engineers have an overwhelming pressure to make their tracks stand out from the competition by creating extraordinary sound quality. The following are some eight mixing tips for audio engineers to make them an edge over the competition: Fresh ingredients It is important that audio engineers use good recording microphones, to do their recordings in sound proof room and to carry out any relevant acoustic treatment. Listen carefully Audio engineers should endeavor to use EQ plugin minus the curve and just listen. This will allow the audio engineer to establish what requires to be cut or boosted. A set of objective ears is critical for any successful audio engineering career. Prioritize elements The degree of importance of things in a mix varies and this fact should be recognized by the sound engineer. The most important elements of a mix need to be given priority over others. Other elements can then be brought in after the important ones. Balance should be the aim of any audio engineer. Tool utilization The manner in which an audio engineer uses his tools matters more than the price of the tools he/she uses. The simplest gear can produce very great mixes when used appropriately. Audio engineers should focus on practicing on how to effectively utilize tools but one at a time. IT'S NOT THE GEAR ITS THE EAR! Sample the work of others An objective sound engineer should avoid being self-absorbed to the extent of justifying their personal work. Context is important in this type of career and that is why it is advisable to listen to the work of other successful audio engineers. Constant comparison of a novice audio engineer’s work with others is part of the learning curve and is necessary for growth. Conclusion The above insightful information reveals that an audio engineer fully understands frequencies and are very knowledgeable about the headroom in a track. This is because they have several sessions under their belt through usually school lessons or those of a mentor. Established audio engineers also understand the desires of a master engineer, and knows exactly how to send a session to him or her. This is why hiring the services of an audio engineer can be quite costly but definitely worth the money. Audio engineers, now you know what they do and what they know. ps, A rough mix is really only acceptable if you the artist just want to hear how you recorded it that time. It is NOT a good idea to promote and put out a rough mix of any song. There is so much competition today and people paying for high quality engineers that you might not be getting the exposure you hoped for. Even Though a good enigneer is a little costly its better to pay for one song this month then another next month etc rather then getting a bunch of quick mixes. Find someone who will take their time and APPRECIATE what you have recorded so they can make it sound 100x better! FOR HIGH QUALITY BEATS/ IMAGE DESIGN / VOCAL TAGS AND MORE! Why It's A Good Idea To Be With BMI Or ASCAP
BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) and ASCAP ( American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) are two of the top three United States performing rights organizations (the other being Society of European Stage Authors and Composers). The role of a performing right organization is to collect license fees on behalf of the songwriters, composers and music publishers. And then the organization distributes them to the songwriters, composers and music publishers as royalties. They have simple mission statement that basically say that they are there to build a bridge between songwriters and the businesses and organizations that want to play their music publicly.
Why should performers sign up with BMI and ASCAP?
Tip#1: BMI and ASCAP allows songwriters, composers and music publishers to focus strictly on their craft and not have to worry about their performance rights. They are both equipped to handle any category or any genre, including, concert music, country, film and TV, Jazz, Latin, Musical Theatre, Pop/Rock and Rhythm/Soul.
Tip#2: BMI is not new in this industry and are very professional. They can add value to your business in the music industry. BMI has been around since the 1940’s and currently powers over 750,000 licensed business that use music and represent over 12 million musical works. ASCAP was the first PRO (performing right organization) in the Unites States. It was founded in 1914. As the music industry has evolved, they have learned to evolve right along with it. Throughout the evolution of their business they have always remained committed to protecting songwriters, composers and music publishers. ASCAP is home to more than 600,000 creating members and have over 10 million licenses.
Tip#3: Both ASCAP and BMI values music. They are advocates on behalf of the music creators and they love all genres and respect creators at any stage in their career. However, ASCAP is proud to say that they get 80% of Oscar music nominations. Some of BMI’s popular celebrities that they license(d) include (but not limited to), Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Fifth Harmony, Lil Wayne, Lady Gaga, Birdman, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Rihanna, Shakira, Maroon 5, Evanescence, Nickelback, Linken Park, Sam Cooke, Dolly Parton and even Michael Jackson. ASCAP has thousands of popular celebrities whom work(ed) with them including, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Dr. Dre, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, and The Ramones.
Although they do license people with “big names” they are very interested in helping people who are just starting their career in the music industry.
Tip#4: BMI and ASCAP are very diligent at paying music royalties to creators when their songs are performed. Some of the most popular places to play music that receive royalties are TV shows, Radio and Movies. BMI gives one half of the royalties to the songwriter(s) and the other half is designated for the publisher(s) or copyright holder(s). ASCAP calculates royalties by use weight (an amount attached to each performance) X licensee weight (license fee paid by the station) X “Follow the Dollar Factor” (License fees that ASCAP receives) X Time of Date (the time of date the performance occurs; prime time, midnight?) + Premium Credits = Credits. ASCAP certainly has a more complicating royalty equation, but it provides the most amount of money for their consumers.
Tip#5: BMI has a well diverse executive team that consists of experts in fields such as music career development, technology, finance, licensing, new media, corporate strategy and even copyright law. At ASCAP the employees are all proud to be part of the community of music creators and supports. They are collectively experts in music and media businesses, technology, licensing and copyright. ASCAP is also the only United State performing rights organization with a Board of Directors. The Board is elected by their membership.
In the end, either BMI or ASCAP would be suitable companies for your needs. Both are relatively equal in quality and ability. It is very necessary to make sure that if you are a songwriter, composer or publisher that you are singing up for a performance right organization to ensure that your hard work is protected. Both of these companies want to make sure that you are fairly compensated for the music that is performed in public. These two companies charge businesses who play your music and then send you the money as royalties. Both companies use cutting edge technology to track, match, process and pay over a trillion performances each year.

The Process for Completing a Track
Do you want to make music history with your track? Here are the steps in the process of completing a track are;
1. The artist writes lyrics
Any great song has two parts – great lyrics and music. To be able to write a song, you need to understand the structure of the song. It comprises of an introduction, verse, chorus and the bridge. Try freeform song-writing then fit it into the structures recommended above. This way you say what you want to say in the song without the encumbrance of a scaffold. Then fit it into the AABA structure; this is the most popular DNA for music. The A stands for verse and B is the chorus. This means that the song will have two verses, a chorus and another verse at the end. Next try the complex ones like the AABB, ABA, etc. Be inspired, listen to great songs, read poetry and prose, summarize them, be opinionated. Capture the stream of consciousness, use this exercise to channel your thoughts about everything, these are the building blocks of a song.
2. the recording
The next step is recording. Apply the music notations, the bars, measures, notes, rests, etc. Your lines should have even syllables and maintain a steady rhythm. Experiment with a melody; work your song around an existing melody, then graduate to modifying this melody. Make sure to leave lapses for the artist to breathe. Then revise by practising the song. Set the rhythm and rhymes. Record the performance in a single take with 1 or 2 mics. A song can be recorded with all the instruments which is a trackout in hiphop/rap. The Trackouts will blend with your vocals better than a WAV or MP3 file when mixed properly. Why? Because say the snare on the site was too loud now that you have the trackouts you can now lower JUST the snare in the mix. And you can really bring the beat around your vocals evenly alot better than a WAV or MP3.
3. the mixing
After you have a great recording get it mixed properly. It should be a cocktail that gets people high and happy. Look for a good engineer who has the experience and many sessions under his belt. This Is The Most Important part of the song. A mix can break or make the song, a bad or “Quick Mix” just wont do it. There has to be care taken into your song that's why it is so time consuming. The Term Fix it in the mix or mastering, does not apply its a total lie. The best way to get the best out of your song is so have the BEST recording you can and then get it mixed properly! Mixing a song means putting all the tracks together to make one single track.
4. the mastering
Mastering makes your track loud and audible on all platforms – carts, iPod, stereos etc. this is the last step of the recording process. It is done by a mastering engineer well-versed with the gear. Mastering is done by the ear or using a software that requires a studio monitor and headphones. The Master Is working on the final mix that was bounced to one audio file. THis is the topping on the cake and will make your song way louder to the volume you want, without clipping of course. If your mixing on your own. CLIPPING IS NOT OK! Dont be lazy and make it work without clipping. Then once you have had the song mastered then burn a CD by converting your stereo file into a 16-bit at 44.1 Hz.(which is Red Book Audio, All cds are these specs)
5. and then you can promote it
After all the above has been done, it is time to get it distributed and monetized. Buy ads and get it set up on streaming websites. You could also promote your music by live performances and collaborate with other musicians. You could use social media to promote your appearances and gigs. Another way to promote your track is by selling your music on YouTube and iTunes. Or cutting a record with a label. Radio and TV channels hosting daily talk shows and music reality shows invite the artists to promote their tracks live. Passionate musicians can also build a community of practice with music channels, radio, TV, blogs, and websites. And all their work can be promoted via email, SMS, MMS, twitter and Facebook. Then all you have to do is collect royalties with ASCAP or BMI organizations. Whats On Your Pre-amp?
What are all these knobs and buttons on my pre am? You ever wonder this? Its ok because this really is a new learning curve getting into this world of audio. Ill be discussing what is usually on every or most pre-amps out today. Im going to go off my apollo because it has most of what's out today on every pre-amp.
1.monitor and preamp, monitor is what is coming out of your headphones and or monitors. You'll notice when your headphone are plugged in sound will come out. Once that happens you can turn down your monitors usually with the big knob so u get a silent clean recording. And the pre-amp is what the mics are plugged into. If you didn't know what the difference was or were confused here ya go lol.
2. Going to the pre-amp stuff, you might see some options or buttons. you might see the: -Input - the signal coming from the microphone. you can adjust the gain here remember to always aim for the loudest part of the vocal at -6db to get a great recording.
-a weird half triangle looking thing - this is a symbol for low pass filter. What that does is automatically cuts off low end frequencies.(see your pre amps specs to see what freq. it cuts off to.) it makes your voice cleaner sounding but you may not need it depends on how the engineer does it. - +48V - This Is a very important one. This means 48 volts of electricity which is what CONDENSER microphones use and need to work properly. Please check to see if your microphone is a condenser or dynamic. If it's dynamic you do not need to have this on. If it's condenser it must be on right when your daw launches up and your session is ready. - Pad - This button means that it will dim your mic by -10 or -20 db usually(see specs of your pre amp) usually needed for really loud sounds. -A Zero with a slash through it - This Symbol is phase - it can flip the phase of your mic if needed usually not really needed but i think its mostly for more a few channels if your have that on your pre amp.
3. The Back Of The Pre-amp. On the Back Of the pre amp you might not understand some cool additions you can make with your dope pre amp. - optical in - If you have this on your preamp you have a really cool feature. You can go buy a optical cable(i recommend at sweetwater.com) and what it is , is 8 additional channels for your pre-amp. you could record a drum set with that if needed. -Monitor L R - All Pre-amps have this its where your monitors are plugged into(speakers). The L is the left speaker and the R is the right speaker. if you have more you can add more speakers or just go get a monitor A/B setup and you can put a few sets thru there. - Line Out - This is a cool one also. This is how.... say you were in a studio and wanted to use your pre-amp instead of your friends weird one. Well to get it to the mixing board. You would use the line out cables and put it a channel in the board and it would be a line level signal for direct recording. Meaning exactly whats coming out of yours will get recorded through the board. I Covered Most of whats on all pre-amps out today. Of Course there's other things but thats just some too easy stuff that most of yall im sure know already. Have Fun And Make some great music. Bless.

Don't Do These Things While Recording
1.Being Unrealistic about the Recording Process
Before even stepping into a recording studio or starting the recording process, many forgo the importance of knowing the pace of work of the vocalist, engineer or even themselves. Prior to coming in or even considering studio options or producers, most vocalists should in fact record themselves in order to determine essential elements, such as how long they should dedicate to each track, in a process that is time-consuming and costly as it is.
Therefore, creating a or numerous detailed recordings is paramount in order to establish a creative vision, acknowledging any potential vocal flaws that can occur with specific tracks and makes a team a great deal more efficient if you happen to be working with one. Knowing how something sounds, even if done with amateur recording programs, will boost professionalism during the recording process as well as confidence for creating a recording that sounds great. In the recording process, professionalism also means having thorough understanding of what technical input may be required from the studio engineers, how to navigate the functionalities in the studio and what you expect from post-production. Being prepared will only give you leverage in the recording process!
2.Positioning the Vocalist Too Close
A common mistake when it comes to recording the all-important part that are vocals. Most less-experienced recordists will inevitably want the vocalist to position themselves in immediate proximity to the mic so as to avoid sound leakage onto the recording. However,to get the best recording engineers require the vocalist to be at a little distance to ensure authentic air and openness translates into the recording. A 6” to a foot distance, which is generally measured with the help of a wide spread hand between the vocalist and mic will give the best frequency of sound for most vocal parts.
Consider the recording studio or room's ambient and isolation. A good tip is to lean back away from the microphone when loud parts are coming. This is to get the best feel and the right openness and quality of vocals. A potential issue with creating a distance between the mic and the vocalist in the naturally tendency of most vocalists to move around during the recording process, causing the take to reflect level changes in the vocal tone as distractions that may be difficult to fix in post-production. So try and stay in one space at all times while recording on the mic.
3.Relying Solely on Mic's Pop-screen or The Mic
All mics for vocal recordings SHOULD have a pop filter. its role is to guarantee the microphones diaphragm doesn't get any spit or dirt or anything in it. But implosives, which are the occurring 'p' and 'b' sounds on recording and are ultimately difficult to edit in post-production must be taken into consideration before your record.
Depending on the vocalist, you may also be able to avoid the p's which is caused by air hitting against the diaphragm. Similarly, the vocalist is relative to the performance during the recording; - many rely solely on the mic's brand or just a pop filter but what was mentioned above, are needed in order to guarantee the vocalist sounds perfect on the vocal track.
4.Over-Doing it in Post-Recording
Applicable during the recording process as well, many vocalists, musicians and songwriters heavily rely on effects to make up for the lack of quality of the recording. Over-using the reverb effect, which tends to make a recording sound more polished and less flat and is as easily noticeable as the increasing amount of people relying on it.
During the recording process, try to utilize your technical and vocal awareness and recording as clean as possible in order to only implement effects in post-production for minor additions and small fixes.
5.Being Negative
The recording process does not always feel the most natural to all. In fact, it is a journey during which you will come to uncover the depths of your vocal capability or music and inevitably encounter technical setbacks and minor disappointments when something does not sound as you intended.
Make the most of the recording time and stay open-minded rather than sticking to strict self-imposed guidelines or a roadmap to achieving what you think is the perfect recording. Take advice in, and let experience be your best teacher in making a recording that has soul and that you will be proud of.
Once you have chosen the right recording studio and booked a recording session, you should consider the preparation steps which are essential to ensure smooth running of your recording time. Going off some of the most common mistakes that people make during project-recording, will not only save you time and energy in post-production but guarantee you don't continuously fall into those recording traps, instead utilizing your time efficiently towards bettering your recording sessions and outcomes.

The 5 Best Places To Promote Your Music In 2017
An increasingly high number of artists are choosing to self-promote in order to get their foot in the door for a successful musical career, ultimately causing a shift towards online platforms that offer a great deal of exposure. There is no doubt about the fact that the internet has dramatically changed the way we share and experience music and with the ever-changing industry guidelines, we revisit what were the top 5 places to put your music to be seen that were big in 2016 in order to take stock of what musicians need to consider about these platforms in 2017.
1.Soundcloud
Since it made its first appearance in 2007, SoundCloud has stayed on top of the game as one of the world's most successful audio distribution platforms with over 200 million monthly unique visitors.
The platform owes its success in great part to the free-streaming elements and fusing of sociability and shareability features that make discovery of new music all the more enticing. While SoundCloud is one big platform for rising talents, the DJ and techno culture remain at the essence of most of what you will find on the platform, consequently owing its immense popularity to followers of the electronic movement and less so to acoustic, ballad types.
2.YouTube
A giant of similar proportions to SoundCloud but with a slightly different mission statement when it comes to promoting artists. As one of the most powerful video streaming websites available, Youtube have a recognized ability to influence their ever-expanding user base as we may conclude from the countless success-stories of youtubers rising to the top of International charts. Thanks to the way video-sharing is changing the discovery of new artists through suggestions, platforms like YouTube largely eliminate segmenting of genres consequently increasing the chances of stumbling upon a rising artist one may like based on things they normally search for. Up and coming artists themselves should YouTube's tools to their advantage and optimize their channels in order to excite a broader audience about being able to freely access their music.
3.Tidal
In 2016, Tidal came into the spotlight due to the fact that it was virtually the only place where one could stream Kanye West's critically acclaimed album 'The Life of Pablo'. This Jay-Z owned music streaming service is not dissimilar to Spotify but largely bets of exclusivity. Pitched as a way for artists to 'take back the music industry' from giants who sell advertisement, to access greater royalties on their music and facilitate the path to success for up-and-coming artist through features like Tidal Discover and their economies of a fairer sharing model for artists. The subscription is paid and Tidal claims that this way, it ensures how committed it is to stomping a way for new artists towards building a career that is rewarding and sustainable.
4.Apple Music
Apple Music rolled out in 2015 and underwent significant improvement in the year that followed. Recognizing the potential for a streaming service as an extension of every iTunes library, Apple Music connect helps artists claim their 'artist page' and directly and easily post demos, videos, photos and albums like they would on social media but as an artist on the Connect platform. A seemingly easy transition for those already familiar with iTunes and Apple Music and undoubtably a satisfactory solution for new artists to gain exposure and expand their audience reach under the authority of an Apple service.
5.Tradiio
A lesser known but incredibly entertaining platform to promote your music online, dubbed the Stock Market for Music; - Tradiio is a rewards-based music discovery and streaming start-up that quickly gained popularity due to its innovative sharing model that takes music discovery one step further. Artists can upload albums, demos and tracks, letting fans engage with the music and investing in the artists using a virtual currency. Those who receive the biggest investment will not only top the Tradiio charts but have the ability to gain access to studio time, record label introductions and the chance to record a music video while the investors or fans can win festival tickets, music gear such as headphones and speakers and invitations to attend private shows of the artists they support.
Many streaming services will vary greatly depending on the individual expectations of the artist navigating them. Equally so, streams must ultimately be regarded as a source of revenue that needs to be monitored, and often, paying services or those requiring a monthly subscription fee for use of the platform will ensure the artist is getting a fairer return than they would on a free platform such as YouTube which largely remains a social network. While these may have made it as the 5 best places to promote your music as an artist, the market consists of multiple players and therefore a musician's greatest responsibility is to identify the crucial importance of their target audience's behaviour online before proceeding to finding the online platform that will answer their needs and reach a substantial audience through genuine sharing and promoting of their music.

Things You Need For Starting A Home Recording Studio
One of the most frequent questions asked by the newbie rap artist is how to record music at home. And since recording at studios can get really costly, people opt for cheap alternative I.e recording at home. If you want to record music at home, following are the 5 things that you need:
Condenser microphone- so, there are basically two type of microphones. First are dynamic microphones and second are condenser microphones. What you need for recording music at home is condenser microphone as dynamic ones are generally used in case of live recordings. Condenser microphones are preferred because they trap the complete spectrum of your voice. Even though they are less durable than dynamic microphones, they are able to pick more detailed sound. These are also inexpensive but you should do proper research before buying your microphone.
Digital audio workstation - The digital audio workstation (Daw) is the main software which is used to record, mix and edit music on your laptop or computer. Even though investment in DAW is a big deal, you need not overthink while making this decision. As the DAWs available these days are compatible with most of the devices, you need to buy one which suits your budget. Daw software initially was very expensive but with time price has decreased considerably. However, still it can cost you few hundred dollars. Companies these days are launching the lite version of Daw, which has lesser features but sufficient for amateur musicians. If you want to dosage some money, go for the lite version of DAW.
Audio interface- if you want to record music from your microphone, you need to have an audio interface. With the help of audio interface, the sound is converted into a digital signal which can be read by your DAW software and computer. Audio interfaces generally use FireWire,Thunderbolt or USB to get linked to your PC or Mac. Majority of these interface are available with extra features which are in reality not much use to you. You don't have to be overwhelmed by these products. If you are recording at home, all you need is a normal USB interface with input and output channels. Invest wisely and don't pay heed to pompous show.
Headphones - when you get your digital audio workstation set up properly, you need to buy some good quality headphones, Just normal in the ear headphones won't do the job. Headphones would let you listen to the music while you are recording it. No matter what setup you are using to record the music, headphones are a must. There are basically two type of headphones that you need to buy - closed back headphones which are normally used for tracking purpose and open back headphones which are normally used for mixing the track. The closed back headphones are a good choice for isolation but their sound quality isn't much great whereas open back headphones provide more high quality sound, are more costly but need to be used in quiet place.
Quiet recording space- While you are recording music at home, you need a quiet recording space, preferably an acoustically treated area. Silence is extremely important if you are planning to record music. The commercial studios generally spend lots of money to make their studios noise and sound proof. However, with your limited budget we certainly understand that this is not possible. But you need to set up your recording placebos such a way so that you are isolated from all the outside sound and disturbance (neighbor or street noise), and which can be acoustically treated in a manner so that audio reflections can be controlled. This space then is going to turn into your creative space that stores your microphone and all other recording devices. Also, make sure that the spaces you choose don't allow your voice to echo. For this, using sound panels or simply placing few pillows will do the trick.
As a rap artist, including these above five things in your house studio will be more than sufficient to produce some high quality music. However, if you want you can also include other similar equipments that would help you better such as powered monitors, a MIDI keyboard, audio cables, keyboard and mic stand, power bars and pop filter. Starting your own home recording studio can initially seem to be difficult and nearly impossible. But you need to remember that just don't buy all the expensive equipments thinking they are the best choice for you. Do proper research before making any decision. New Microphone Tips
Whats up? Hows The Music Going This Far This Year? I Hope Your Ready To Make Some Hard FIRE New Music This Year ! I Wanted To Talk About Basically An Intro To Recording and A Few Tips You Might Not Know That i Gained From My Recording School Used By The Pros. 1. What You Need For A HIGH Quality Recording. This Is Very Important. Sure Gear Is Not Everything but that statement is for mixing and mastering! You Need A Good Mic / A Good Preamp And A Great artist who can stay on beat with the song. AND of Couse a DAW (I assume You already know that so i wont get into DAW because they all do alot of the same stuff.BUT pro tools is the most advanced logic x is good too.) - A Good MIc I Recommend ONLY CONDENSER microphones. A nice price one if your on a budget is a Rhode NT-1A. Runs about 140-200$. This mic sounds great! and is still used by some pros. If You are experienced and want that recording quality that u hear on the radio go with the Nuemann U87 (BEST MIC OUT FOR VOCALS) used by ALOT of pros as well. - A Good Preamp is also very important ! Its like the brain of your recording. some of you might use or have used the avid ones that come with some pro tools setups. these are not that good at all in my opinion. you get what you pay for , the volume and preamps aren't sensitive enough and takes u longer to get a nice setting and they arnt that great sounding to my ears. there's much much better out there and it might blow your mind if you hear the difference. some good pre amp companies id recommend are: Focusrite(scarlet series/ saffire pro series) / Universal audio (apollo series - AMAZING) / Presonus(audio Box 2/Eureka) and Apogee(duet/ solo). These are some good ones i recommend for all budgets. - Lastly A GOOD RECORDING FROM A GOOD ARTIST! This is equally as important. Some of you might have heard of Fix it in the Mix. No that doesn't work! what u record is what will come out. we can only make that sound pretty. we cant fix how you recorded it. So what i mean is you as a artist have to stay on beat when you record on every take thats the way to get a nice recording like the one on the radio and the one you want and hear in your head! Tips - Heres some tips for recording. 1. Make Sure your recording at 24 bit 48khz this is the best if you got a pretty good set up. if you got a fast computer id go with 24bit 96khz . Thats if your preamp can handle that. 2.Make sure nothing is coming out of your monitors when you record. 3.if you have a condenser make sure u turn on the phantom power (48v) before you press that R button. 4.make sure your LOUDEST part in your hook doest go any higher than the MAGIC NUMBER ( -6db) on your meter . sure its low but when u master a song is when it gets loud. dont listen to anyone tell u any different they are so wrong and i see it all the time. 5. layer your vocals do about 3 takes each hook and usually 2 nice takes and some adlibs on the verses for a nice full sound.
