I think the people i'm closest to are people who I agree on the kind of fundamental stuff, but also, I would feel comfortable disagreeing with. Because there are people and i'm friends with that I don't agree with on some pretty big things, but feel too aghh to argue it.

“Television and print advertisements often use sext to sell products like beer and automobiles, implicitly promising the intended male consumers that attractive women will flock around them if they purchase the correct product. Do such ads make thoughts about women as sex objects more accessible? Might this priming even affect they way men treat women they meet? Laurie Rudman and Eugene Borgida (1995) showed one group of male students a series of tv commercials that the researchers felt portrayed women as sex objects, while another group saw commercials for similar products (such as beers or cars) that lacked the sexist imagery. The students then were asked, as a favour to the experimenter, to interview a female student (actually a confederate) for a job assisting the research project. The students who had viewed the sexist ads (compared to the nonsexist ones) sat closer to the interviewee and asked her more personal and inappropriate questions. After the interview, they recalled more about her physical appearance, but less about the information she revealed in the interview. They also rated her as more friendly, but less competent in terms of her potential job duties! Finally, the interviewee, who did not know which priming video each man had viewed, rated how much she felt the interviewer had been looking at her body and how sexuall motivated he was. These ratings were higher for the men who had watched the sexist commercials. It seems that the concept of viewing women as sex objects can be primed, affecting men’s judgements and behaviour toward real women over whom they may hold power. it is worth pondering the fact that in this study, these effects were produced by typical, everyday tv commercials, not extreme or pornographic materials.”

My developmental psychology lecturer told us about this, and it's probably one of the reasons why I like her so much. I overheard someone talking about it on the train, and how it was so obviously true and they didn't need to do research to find that out. I was not impressed. YES! Just for you, human Rosie ;) It would be so fucking cool to be able to prove that ALL wrong.
