Summer 17
Here’s to you summer seventeen,
Midday sun, the cheerful scene,
You were most anticipated yet so unexpected,
I’ll be adding you to the memories I’ve collected.
The days were long and beautifully coloured,
With designs of flowers, pastels, and rainbows embroidered.
Sunsets early and vast as far as I could see,
Evenings brisk and lovely, children running free.
This was all an act, a mere mislead external vision,
The beauty it had appeared was far from perfect precision.
You came and went too quick for me to judge,
This summer’s eve “high” won’t seem to budge.
So goodbye summer, goodbye scraped knees,
See you later broken hearts, late nights, and bumblebees.
Nice knowing you campfires, flip- flops, and easy fit jeans,
Au revoir to my almost lovers and cinematic scenes.
Take care scorching pavement, sand castles and warm breeze,
Bye- bye flowers, ice- cream, and little white tees.
Until next year bikinis, aviators, and short- shorts,
Till we meet again with the loud music and sports cars of all sorts.
This is a shout out to my beloved summer seventeen
Sprinkler splashing, couples walking, fell for you but didn’t mean.
Your mind crippling scenery made me believe in second chances,
You made me forget about sadness and failed romances.
I was one with the trees; they made me act without consideration,
The sun made me think optimistic, without hesitation.
My own mistake, it’s not summer to blame
I should have been smarter, or avoided the flame.
It’s been wonderful but with great beauty comes great pain
You tore us apart with your lustrous reign
So take back the radio blasting, starry nights and popsicles,
Take away the summer dresses, drawn back curtain and bicycles.
You can keep your puppy dogs, humid afternoons, and candy,
Bring with you the jump ropes, and barbecues oh so dandy.
With hold those marshmallows, camp songs, and swimming pools
Save the backyard hose, tank tops, and gardening tools
All good things come to an end, nothing remarkable lasts forever
What happened to you being here through whatever?
You’re gone and so is the summer at last,
Just like winter will freeze over the grass
There goes my reckless abandonment of reality,
It’s time to wake up and accept actuality.
Take all this beauty and love away with such grace,
Back where you came from to its rightful place.
Time will heal over the rest of what you’ve left behind,
How lovely he was and nice the weather, yet the farewell so unkind.
So here’s to you summer seventeen
Can’t get you back, this is now that was then.
