✩₊˚.⋆ Chapter seventeen ⋆⁺₊✧
Rain tapped softly against the windows of Y/n’s apartment, steady and calming beneath the low sound of thunder rumbling somewhere far off in the distance.
The whole apartment felt warm tonight.
Soft yellow lighting glowed through the living room, music humming quietly from her speaker while she sat curled up on the couch with her sketchbook balanced against her knees. One of her blankets was wrapped loosely around her legs, a half-finished cup of tea forgotten on the coffee table beside her.
Her pencil moved absentmindedly across the page, doodling little flowers into the corners while she listened to the rain outside.
Usually storms like this made New York feel quieter somehow, softer.
But every now and then her thoughts drifted towards Peter.
Somewhere out there in the freezing rain.
Probably soaked through his suit by now.
Probably pretending he wasn’t cold.
I mean sure he had his suit heater, but how long was it going to keep him warm?
Her chest tightened a little at the thought.
She tried to push it away, focusing back on her drawing as thunder echoed again outside.
then she suddenly heard 3 fast knocks on her window.
Y/n’s eyes widened immediately as she realized it was probably Peter outside her window.
She rushed up from the couch, blanket slipping off her legs as she crossed the apartment quickly. The second she pulled the curtain aside, her stomach dropped.
He stood outside on the fire escape completely drenched, rainwater practically dripping off him, his suit clinging to him and in one hand he was holding a plastic bag.
a plastic bag that she just saw move.
“Do you happen to be allergic to cats?” he asked quickly.
“Peter are there cats in that plastic bag?!” she whisper-yelled.
“Baby, answer the question” he said, shivering slightly. “Are you allergic to cats or not?”
“No! No I’m not!” she said immediately, already pulling the window open wider. “Come in, oh my god-you must be freezing.”
Peter climbed inside awkwardly, landing heavily onto the floor near the couch.
The second he crouched down, his teeth started chattering hard enough to make Y/n wince.
She dropped beside him quickly while he tugged his mask off with freezing fingers before carefully opening the plastic bag resting in his lap.
Two tiny kittens blinked up at them.
They were impossibly small.
Tiny little things soaked from the rain, pressed together and trembling.
Y/n’s entire face softened instantly.
“Oh my god…” she whispered.
Peter looked down at them, exhausted. “Their mom abandoned them. I found them in a sewer crying.” He swallowed slightly. “They were getting soaked from the rain.”
Y/n looked like she might actually cry.
She hurried up quickly, disappearing into the hallway before returning with the softest blanket she owned along with a towel.
Peter watched quietly while she carefully lifted the kittens out one at a time like they were made of glass.
“They’re freezing” she murmured softly.
She wrapped them gently in the towel first, drying them carefully before tucking both kittens into the warm blanket in her lap. One of them immediately curled closer into the warmth.
Peter let out a tired breath, shoulders finally relaxing a little now that they were safe.
Y/n glanced over at him then frowned immediately.
“I’m okay” he lied instantly.
Y/n pointed firmly toward the bathroom. “Go shower. Right now.”
“I’ll look after them until then” she added softly, adjusting the blanket around the kittens carefully. “Go warm up.”
Peter stared at her for a second.
At the kittens curled safely in her lap.
At the way she was already looking at them with so much care like she’d known them forever.
Something soft tugged painfully at his chest.
“…okay” he mumbled quietly.
Then he leaned down quickly, pressing a freezing cold kiss against her cheek before dragging himself toward the bathroom.
After a few minutes, she stood carefully and carried the kittens over to the couch, setting them down inside a little nest she made out of blankets and one of her hoodies.
The bathroom door opened not long after.
Peter stepped out with damp curls and sweatpants hanging low on his hips, wearing one of the old t-shirts he kept at her apartment. Steam still clung faintly to his skin from the hot shower, though his cheeks were finally starting to regain some color.
One of the kittens had somehow managed to wiggle halfway out of the blanket almost immediately after Peter sat down beside them.
“Hey, hey-where do you think you’re going?” he murmured softly.
He carefully slid his hands underneath the tiny kitten and lifted it up against his chest.
The thing was so small it fit entirely in one of his palms.
Peter stared down at it with one hand cupped around its little body while the other instinctively shielded it closer to him, thumb brushing gently over its head.
The kitten blinked up at him sleepily and let out the tiniest sound and something inside Y/n genuinely melted.
Her eyes glossed over before she could stop it.
He looked so gentle like this.
His curls were still damp from the quick shower he’d taken, messy at the ends where they curled against his forehead. He still looked tired too, dark circles faint beneath his eyes, shoulders heavy with exhaustion, but there was something so painfully gentle about him sitting there on her couch at almost two in the morning holding two tiny sewer kittens like they were the most important things in the world.
She felt her chest ache with it.
She was so unbelievably in love with him it was almost embarrassing.
Peter glanced up after a second.
And immediately caught her staring.
“Are you crying?” he suddenly exclaimed, quickly putting the kitten down beside its sibling before turning all his attention to his girlfriend.
“No, no, no-I just…” she laughed softly, shaking her head a little. “You holding that kitten literally made my heart like… like it just-ugh, I just love you.”
Peter blew out a quiet breath through his nose, smiling helplessly as he leaned closer.
His fingers curled gently around her chin before he pressed a soft kiss to her lips.
She kissed him back immediately, smiling into his lips.
Peter smiled too, his thumb brushing lightly against her jaw for a second before pulling back just enough to look at her.
“You’re so cute” he murmured quietly.
She smiled shyly almost immediately at that, ducking her head a little like she suddenly didn’t know what to do with herself under the way he was looking at her.
Peter’s expression softened even more.
His hand slid from her chin to her cheek, thumb brushing gently across warm skin as he looked at her for a second like he was trying to memorize the moment.
“I love you so much” he said quietly.
Y/n’s smile widened a little at the words.
“No seriously” he murmured, leaning closer again, his forehead resting lightly against hers. “Like… an insane amount.”
Y/n let out a soft laugh through her smile, her hand coming up to rest against his wrist.
“I love you an insane amount too” she whispered back.
The front door swung open just after eight in the morning, Peter stepping inside with two small bags from the pet store.
His hair was messy from the wind outside, curls sticking up in different directions like he’d barely bothered fixing them before leaving. He still looked half asleep.
He’d gone to the store the second it opened so the kittens would actually have something to eat besides being wrapped in blankets and loved aggressively.
Y/n looked up from the couch sleepily as he walked in, one of her blankets still wrapped around her shoulders.
Peter crossed the apartment and dropped the bags carefully onto the coffee table before crouching beside the little blanket nest they’d made for the kittens during the night.
The second he saw them, his expression softened completely.
“Well” he murmured, “how are our sewer babies doing this morning?”
Y/n smiled tiredly, reaching down to gently pet one of the tiny heads with her fingertip.
“Good” she said quietly. “But… we might have to stop calling them sewer babies.”
Peter looked up at her immediately. “Why? That’s their story.”
“I know, but I kinda feel bad” she laughed softly. “Imagine surviving the streets just to be named Sewer Baby forever.”
“Okay then” Peter shrugged, reaching into one of the bags. “Choose names for them.”
Y/n’s smile softened slightly at that.
“…Are we keeping them?” she asked quietly. “I don’t wanna pick names if we’re not. It’ll just make me more attached.”
Peter looked up at her immediately, like the answer was obvious.
“Why are you asking me?” he said warmly. “If you wanna keep them, we’re keeping them. It’s up to you.”
Something in her expression softened completely.
She smiled a little before nodding.
“Okay then” he said, pulling the tiny baby bottles from the bag triumphantly. “Start thinking up names while I prepare their bottles.”
Y/n laughed softly as he headed toward the kitchen with complete seriousness, already reading the instructions on the back of the kitten formula.
She watched him for a second from the couch, something warm settling quietly in her chest.
A few minutes later, Peter came back carefully holding the tiny bottles.
One of the kittens let out a tiny squeak as soon as Peter sat down.
Peter’s expression softened. “Okay, okay. We’re getting to it.”
Carefully, he picked one of them up, supporting its tiny body in his hand, before guiding the bottle to its mouth, y/n doing the same with the other kitten, licking it up and carefully feeding it.
Both of them went quiet for a second.
Y/n looked over at him, smiling a little at how focused he looked.
The kitten’s tiny paws pressed weakly against Peter’s fingers while he kept adjusting his grip every few seconds like he was scared of holding it wrong.
He finally glanced over at her then, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly before looking back down at the kitten curled in his hands.
“so any names?” he asked her.
“hmmm” she hummed looking between them, “tomato and soup” she said.
“okay tomato and soup it is” Peter laughed.
