Forever crying about anime and video games.
So this is my thing. I have a lot of cents on this matter so you’re gonna get a lot more than two and they will be all over the place.
Just to start with, I have absolutely no idea what some of you are thinking. That makes it hard to know where to begin because there’s so much, but I will start with this: he doesn’t have a rep for no reason, okay? I’m gonna go on record and say I’m NOT pro-Vic, based off my own experiences, but does that mean I want him thrown in jail or slandered over something he didn’t do? Nah. I don’t got the time to waste being that vindictive. But do I believe the rumors that have been swirling around him for upwards of a decade?
Unfortunately, I have to answer yes to this question.
I met him at five different cons and not once did I ever take a picture with him where the side of his face wasn’t pressed flat against mine. I can still remember the way the stubble felt. It’s pretty clear. And when he hugged me from the side for pictures I always felt his hand on the side of my chest, which I always figured was an accident. And I never once complained about it. You know why? Because I was his fan. I was a 13-16 year old girl through all of this (I’m 25 now, for a frame of reference of how long ago this was) and I was d e v o t e d. It’s honestly quite embarrassing to admit how in love with this dude I was, how much I admired him. He was the voice of my favorite characters!! And when I e-mailed him, he ALWAYS e-mailed me back! How cool was that? I developed an unreasonable attachment to him, so when I felt him hold me so tight and close to him it made me deliriously happy. But then shit happened that had nothing to do with anything sexual, just him being a conceited dick(it’s a whole other story(post is 7 years old)), and my opinion has been on a steep decline ever since.
And then what happened?
I grew up. And realized just how completely messed up it was that a man old enough to be my father, who didn’t know me or even ask my boundaries, just grabbed me and held me like that. And he does that with EVERYONE who wants a picture with him, and some who don’t. I feel bad for the people who are/were genuinely uncomfortable when he did it with them.
And for the people who are like “well if this is so common and has been going on for so long why hasn’t anyone gone to the police or con staff, or stopped him when he hugged them” like first of all, they have gone to con staff. It’s why he’s been banned from so many cons. Second of all, get a grip. There are so many factors that go into something like this; it’s truly not as black and white as Vic stans are making it seem. Some don’t want to cause a scene in the middle of a convention. Some fear they won’t be believed by whoever they talk to about it. Some fear retribution (and good golly gee, could you blame them?) and some are like me, who were very young and okay with it at the time and only realized later on in life: this is not how a middle-aged man is supposed to interact with underage girls. And there’s fuck-all we can do about realizing how gross it was after the fact, other than warn other people. And this is what happens, without fail.
So without even talking about Monica Rial and the drama with the other voice actors:
Just based on the fact that Vic’s reputation has been wallowing in the mud for a good decade and a half and could now cause considerable damage to a company’s image in the #MeToo era, RoosterTeeth and FUNimation probably have enough cause to disengage from him without legal repercussion. It’s not as if they kicked him to the curb for no reason. You people realize Disney does the exact same thing, right? I guarantee you there’s a clause in his contract that made it legally okay to fire him when they did, or they wouldn’t have done it. It’s about maintaining image. Vic is becoming less and less marketable because of his behavior towards his fans and towards convention staff (which he was terribly infamous for) and the fact that it’s finally catching up with him. They don’t want to go down with him lmfao.
And I hate to tell you this, but if he’s suing for wrongful termination, he’s wasting his time and his money. You don’t have to commit an actual crime to be let go from a job. FUNimation just doesn’t want to go to court because it’s a whole dramatic process that eats money, and quite frankly just being an anime dubbing studio, they’re not exactly a rich corporation that can handle a bunch of protracted legal battles. So far as I know.
although i will say monica should have not engaged on twitter, OR outed herself(takes guts but probably not the best move on her part), and while i agree that Vic stans are not in any way entitled to an explanation or evidence from her, she probably shouldn’t have gone all “law enforcement crazy” on people either. Beyond that I don’t know enough about the situation with the VAs to comment.
To sum it up: I know people might not like it. I know mine are not the most uncomfortable experiences shared about him, and frankly it’s not even the reason I dislike him, but if he’s that willing to overstep boundaries in public, I worry about what he would do in private. And if he’s suing FUNimation and RT for wrongful termination, I’m sorry for him. If he’s suing them for something else, it may or may not be a different story. I’m not sitting on the edge of my seat hoping he fails or anything, but he hasn’t given me much reason to root for him either.
Just a reminder, but you do not need to “earn” being tired.
You’re allowed to be tired, even if you haven’t “done” anything and you’re allowed to be tired even if you did less than someone else.
Being tired is a normal thing your body does for a whole plethora of reasons, and is a basic bodily function. You don’t need to “earn” basic bodily functions, no matter what anyone else tells you.
I learned in a Latin Studies class (with a chill white dude professor) that when the Europeans first saw Aztec cities they were stunned by the grid. The Aztecs had city planning and that there was no rational lay out to European cities at the time. No organization.
When the Spanish first arrived in Tenochtitlan (now downtown mexico city) they thought they were dreaming. They had arrived from incredibly unsanitary medieval Europe to a city five times the size of that century’s london with a working sewage system, artificial “floating gardens” (chinampas), a grid system, and aqueducts providing fresh water. Which wasn’t even for drinking! Water from the aqueducts was used for washing and bathing- they preferred using nearby mountain springs for drinking. Hygiene was a huge part if their culture, most people bathed twice a day while the king bathed at least four times a day. Located on an island in the middle of a lake, they used advanced causeways to allow access to the mainland that could be cut off to let canoes through or to defend the city. The Spanish saw their buildings and towers and thought they were rising out of the water. The city was one of the most advanced societies at the time.
Anyone who thinks that Native Americans were the savages instead of the filthy, disease ridden colonizers who appeared on their land is a damn fool.
I’m so glad that after her kids left her, the Mom from Wolf Children got a job livestreaming herself studying on camera to the sound of cool hip-hop lo-fi beats.
She even gets to work in her pajamas! Glad she discovered her path too.
