I’d sell my organs for that picure.
CLIENT: Caroline and Travis
Caroline and Travis are newlyweds from San Diego, CA. They had just purchased their first house and asked me to help decorate the beach front digs. They didn't have a budget, but the couple often disagreed about certain pieces. Caroline wanted a sleek, modern, glam look. Travis wanted a beachier vibe that wasn't so cold. The only requirement for him was the cream sectional. He also purchased a Slim Aarons print as a wedding present for Caroline. We picked out a woven carpet to add to the coziness, and add a beachy element. Caroline and I played around with several different styles, but we had to make sure we took the attached dining space into account. She picked out a white table that had wood legs, and I found navy leather and chrome dining chairs. The combo was sleek, simple, and even a touch masculine. Since the chair were our first purchase, we knew we wanted to tie the same blue color in with the living room.
The last picture is what the finished product will look like!
CLIENT: THOMAS
Thomas had a generous budget of $6,000 for the living room in his house. He is an avid hunter and self proclaimed cowboy from Houston,TX. He enjoyed contributing to the project, unlike most men I’ve worked with. He wanted a look that was both sleek and manly. I decided to stray from colors and stick with a neutral palette. He already owned a beige sectional and media console, as well as a zebra rug that he hadn’t thought to use. I layered the zebra hide over a sisal rug to add some warmth and cover more ground. His main focus was on finding art for above the couch. He initially said he wanted to hang a giant rifle, but I convinced him to go with framed vintage prints of firearms instead of the actual thing. Since we were way under budget, I added decorative pillows that weren’t too loud, and some coffee table decorations to stack on top of his coffee table books.
CLIENT: Wade-A pilot from Raleigh with a passion for music. He wanted to spend under $500 for the bedroom and under $2000 for the living room that he shared with a roommate. Luckily, Raleigh Craigslist had some good finds. Since neither him or his roommate spent much time in their apartment, their only requests were comfort and affordability.
For Wade's bedroom, I wanted the large framed Mick Jagger print to be the focal point. The bedskirt was in BLACK instead of red and hid the bedframe of his queen size bed. I ordered a custom monogrammed pillow with his initials from Etsy for $35. The whole room cost $390.
I bought most of the living room furniture from Wayfair or Craigslist. Since the room was large and the budget was small, I bought a sectional that took up just enough space and didn't leave the finished room looking bare. The barstools were $35 from Craigslist and the bar cart was $60. The art from Wayfair and the $100 console inspired the mid-century modern look of the room. The cowhide rug was on sale for $130 on Wayfair and added a modern touch. Wade already owned a brass floor lamp that went behind the couch. The total ended up being around $1900.
I love history... everything is inspired by history, so that's why I love vintage and antiques

Styling a bar and bar carts
Here are some examples I put together. I feel like the art around the bar is almost as important as whats on it:
1. Pretty packaging is a must. Just like styling a bookshelf (refer to earlier post), I like to keep a similar color palette
2. A perfectly stocked bar cart should have:
Blender
Shaker
Jigger
Ice Bucket
Strainer
Juicer
Muddler
Bottle Opener
Corkscrew
Glassware:
Highball
Lowball
Champagne Flute
White Wine Glass
Red Wine Glass
Cordial Glasses
Shot Glasses
Martini Glass
Pilsner
(A bar cart usually wont have all this jazz, because they are teeny and I would personally like to show off my overpriced winestoppers and cocktail books than actually be the hostess with the mostess. Im 23. Divas can stay at home if they expect a jigger. No clue what that is, but I might buy one.)
3. Show off your pretty liquor bottles, and hide the Andres and Jim Beam behind the counter. Crystal Skull is $50 and worth it solely for the bottle.
4. If you have an actual bar or bar cabinet to hide stuff in, make your bar cart a decoration piece in your dining or living room. A lamp, picture frames, books, candles. You’ll see what I mean in the following pictures.
Below are some of my favorite bar carts, as well as accessories I like
Inspired: Kid’s Room by Carla Lane
Carla Lane is a LA based decorator and badass. I stumbled upon this kid’s bedroom which is busy with Schumacher’s kids line with Lulu DK, but I cannot stop looking. I’m obsessed.
Let’s break this one down a little:
1. Les Touches by Brunschwig and Fils carpet
2. Schumacher Cha-Cha in Grass Valences
3. Lulu DK “Firecracker” fabric on couch
4. Lulu DK Wallpaper
5. Lulu DK for Schumacher on rocking chair
6. Schumacher kids pilows
Pale Pink and Black
Something about this color combo is classic, if done right. I feel like they are always in London flats or something. Those brits, so much class led by so much sass.

DIY Boho American Flag
I saw these American Flags on Free People’s blog a few years ago. As the craft lover I am, I decided to make my own using hand block napkins, fabric scraps, a cloth flag, and trimmings that I found around my house. I went to JoAnn’s fabrics and bought a bunch of additional scraps to add to it. Some was sewn on, but most was applied using a glue gun. It has been a staple on my wall since I made it, and I was even commissioned to make one for someone else. They wanted to keep the American Flag’s colors, so I chose a red, white, and blue tie dye fabric and spray painted 50 stars on it. I also found vintage pins from around the country that I pinned onto the flag.
DIY Les Touches Fabric
One of my first DIY projects was a Brunschiwg and Fils’ “Les Touches” inspired chair from Ikea. I spraypainted the chair silver and tried to concentrate on every little dalmation spot I was drawing. I only have one picture of the finished product, but it turned out pretty well, despite my impatience. All I did was mimic the pattern onto the white cushion using a black sharpie. I’m not kidding. I used a Sharpie....I’ll give myself a C for cheapskate.
BTW...does anyone else use the Diptique candle glass solely for decoration? I’ve never even seen it lit, but I stole it out of the trash when my sister tried to throw it away. I might as well drink water from it.
Another sidenote: I’m missing my American Fashion Designers At Home book and it makes me want to throw away my book collection. I have this weird thing about collections. If one thing is missing, I feel incomplete and have to explain to everyone that there is a missing piece. LIKE THEY WOULD NOTICE? I’m not crazy...I just REALLY like my books....
DIY Watercolor Table
I get so excited when I see a pattern that I think I could have drawn in kindergarten. I thought the print by Deny Designs was awesome, but I don’t think I could stand it on a bed, and it was all absurdly overpriced, so I didn’t even want to buy the cheapest part of the set (pretty sure it was like a tissue box). I have painted this side table over a million times, most recently kelly green, but thats what I do when I get bored. I feel like most of my projects are obviously done by me, but as I said before, I tend to either rush through them or get bored and abandon them.

Goal: Loose Pooch Reality: Bought Pooch
I love the whippet/greyhound statues that I sometimes find in cool foyers or living rooms. I found a cheap alternative (named Dior the dog) on Overstock.com. He ended up being around $80 after I applied a coupon. Unlike my lamps, I couldn't afford to get a pair. I wish I had bought a statue pug instead of the real deal...
Inspiration of the day
I love the unexpectedness of having a huge print or pop-art portrait of a famous icon in a room that is styled with antiques or traditional decor. I bought the largest Mick Jagger prints I could find from AllPosters.com and I plan on putting them on either side of my bed. They have a Slim Aarons-esque look. Thanks to a storewide sale, they were $15 a piece. Can't wait to have them framed!
