hi! just came across your hollanov art it is so beautiful, i especially find water such a tricky thing to illustrate (i don't paint but many of my family members do and they often find it very challenging to capture) --- and i wanted to ask, it might not mean anything really, but was there a particular feeling / theme in mind when doing that art piece? why shane is fully submerged and ilya isn't? idk i was just wondering!

Hii thank you for your comment ! The imagery of one partially submerged and the other fully wasn’t done with the intention of that being the message necessarily, rather I wanted to convey Shane in a very unguarded moment looking at the person he loves. From Shane’s POV you can’t tell what Ilya can see, but once you see Ilya’s POV you know that he is able to see Shane clearly. I think you can definitely apply that symbolically to their broader journeys but to take it at face value wouldn’t be wrong either, I welcome all interpretations. 🌱

Ahh I’m so glad to have found your ineffably beautiful art! The lighting in every piece is absolutely mesmerising ✨ May I please ask how you approach achieving this range of realistic lighting and color effects from imagination, when you’re painting? I really look up to your work!! You’re so inspiring, thank youu and do keep on creating 🤩🤍

Thank you ! I can’t draw a scene until I have a clear idea of what I want the lighting to be but if I’m struggling I will make a moodboard with lighting inspiration and other aesthetic images that encapsulate the tone I need to maintain while drawing. For example these are some images I used as lighting and mood inspiration for my recent Heated Rivalry art + the rough draft.

Hello!! I remember coming across your White Collar piece and always felt there was something oddly familiar about it, were there any inspirations behind it?

Also have to say that I absolutely adore just how much storytelling you can pack into a few panels, thank you for sharing your work with us!

Hello thank you for your comment ! To be honest at the time of drawing the White Collar piece there was nothing that directly inspired it. I had been through several drafts already that I didn’t like until I drew the concept for this. Neal’s drawing reminds me a little of Marilyn Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” so maybe I was channeling that a little bit 😂

Hi ! Thank you for your comment 💚

I start with a basic thumbnail with the layout for the scene, then I clean up the sketch a bit, then block in some basic colors with the lighting I want. After that it's just rendering and color and value adjustments. It definitely helps to turn your image to grayscale to see if you have enough variation in your value, and to determine what part of your image you want the focus to be on and to put more detail into that part.

i just got prints for 1973 and no rest and they’re somehow even more gorgeous in physical form, my wall just got 100 times better for their presence. i made sure to hang them near my chair so i can gaze at then throughout the day lol
