Courtney said of this moment in the photo "We were fucking freaking out about Kurt. We were fucking sad and scared."

Originally Nirvana was scheduled to headline Lollapalooza in 1994, reportedly being offered nearly $10 million (Kurt confirmed on Feb 6, 1994 that they were doing it). Nirvana officially dropped out of the festival on April 6, 1994 citing Kurt's health as the primary reason. His body was discovered in Seattle the next day, and 116 days later these photos of Courtney and Jennifer were taken.

The Smashing Pumpkins eventually took the headline spot at Lollapalooza in 1994.

Courtney Love made guest appearances at two Lollapalooza shows in 1994 (this show in Philly and several days later in New York), asking Billy Corgan if she could play Miss World and Doll Parts before The Smashing Pumpkins sets -- including this Philadelphia show at FDR Park.

In Philly, Courtney asked Billy to give 5 minutes of his show time to her. She asked to borrow Wayne Coyne's Fender guitar (from the Flaming Lips). and was then carried over the mud to the stage to perform her two songs. After that she asked the crowd for a minute silence for Kurt.
