They're a criminals, and I'm glad at least one of them is in prison, where he belongs.

Its actually so important to me that Ryland Grace is a teacher. Not a professor, not someone at the top of their field teaching the smartest people, but a middle school science teacher. Of course he figured out how to communicate with an alien in under a day. His main expertise is explaining complex subjects to a group that doesnt have the vocabulary or context to fully understand them. He knows exactly how to simplify things down to its core principles without sacrificing any of the scientific logic. And he knows how to do it without having to throw around hyperspecific terminology.

My bf and I find funny the fact that we are even together.

Because like.

He's a Catholic, cishet man. A very traditional one, with very conservative ideals. He thinks things like piercings and tattoos look antinatural and wrong, he would never use a skirt, nor makeup, he dresses very... Normal, let's say. He had always dreamt of having a wife, of having kids, getting married.

While I'm Catholic, too, I'm a genderfluid aroace whos currently in a QPR. I have very progressive ideals, I am and dress very much eccentric, love to use weird and/or creative makeup, tons of jewelery, and I never really cared for having a family or getting married.

And for some reason we make it work, lmao.

(although it may be because my upbringing was very... conservative, so some of that is still part of me, and he's very open minded and doesn't share some of the more... Harmful ideologies, like, he's not homophobic nor misogynistic, quite the contrary, he's very adamant about the fact that our country has a very serious issue about normalizing misogyny, homophobia and other dangerous beliefs).

So, unlike Eridians, we discovered fire very early on and so our civilization kinda grew up with combustion right? We've had thousands of years to normalize it and get comfortable with the idea of using it casually for warmth or cooking etc.

In contrast, Eridians had to discover fire in a lab since their atmosphere doesnt have O2 like ours. So they dont have, like, an entire culture normalizing fire.

the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.

I didn't saw him as aroace watching the movie, but THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. I was so disgusted at "you don't even have a dog", and felt so bad for him everytime he showed he missed Earth so much. Because yeah, he doesn't have a dog, nor a cat, nor a partner, but deeming his life unworthy of living BECAUSE OF THAT? Damn, it IS something that we have to deal with a lot, and even people who is no aro and/or ace but is just single.

This movie is amazing in every aspect, it gets bonus points for the aroace rep (even if Grace isn't canonically aroace... That I know of).
