Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Tenth layer - Pandemonium

This layer is unlike all the rest, in that it is not full of the souls of mortals being eternally punished for their crimes. Instead, this is the prison of the original demons; the creators of all life in Hell, and the architects of pain. They are locked eternally in a chaotic and hellish (pun-intended) war that combines all the sins and torments of the previous layers. This layer is sealed, forever closed to both comings and goings, by the gods themselves. And besides, the demons here don’t want to leave. This is a hell of their own creation.

These demons are the definition of malicious, foul, hateful beings. They take all shapes and all forms, adapt all methods of torture and torment, and repeatedly destroy and remake eachother in a sick game of “Who can be the ‘King of All Evil’”. They are beyond solid description, and yet also entirely content to be sealed in their Prison/Paradise of pandemonium.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Ninth layer - Violence

The sinners from all the previous layers whose crimes were especially violent in nature. Seditious murderers, torturers, abusers, r*pists, and more. People who purposely cause violent, horrific harm on others and actively take pleasure in it. Cruelty in all its forms thrives here.

This layer is probably both the most and least creative in its methods of punishment. Your classic torturers run wild coming up with progressively worse ways to destroy a person on repeat, often curated towards the nature of the sinner’s crime. People are forced into fighting pits for entertainment. People who abused and r*ped are abused and r*ped in return. People are bound in infernal chains and thrown into a boiling ocean of blood to burn and drown and be crushed under the weight of the blood endlessly for all eternity. Souls here are made to be broken, and the demons in charge of doing so relish in the breaking.

Demons of all kinds live here, if they choose to pursue the violent nature of the ninth layer. Most of them are classified as “Carnifexes”, meaning executioner, hangman, torturer, victimizer, or hellkite. It has a surprising lack of non-humanoid creatures, however. Most have been killed off, or taken as pets to be instruments of torture. Hellhounds, giant wither rats, and poisonous flaming scorpions are common favorites.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Eighth layer - Hatred

The evolution of ‘Wrath’, this layer is full of people whose anger festered into active hatred; whether violent or not. Many of the people who end up here are premeditative murderers, perpetrators of heinous warcrimes, or people whose anger manifested in cruelty towards the object of their contempt.

The punishments here are the symbolic evolution of their crime. Hatred is often referred to as something that “eats people alive” or “poisons from within”. So people here are either repeatedly, neverendingly subjected to poisons, venoms, and toxins of all kinds in exceedingly creative ways - or repeatedly eaten alive; by bugs, starved or rabid animals, monsters, demons with a taste for ‘long pork’, and even eachother.

Highly populated by Devils, Archdevils, hydras, hellhounds, dragons, and assorted other ravenous beasts.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Seventh layer - Wrath

Full of people who let their anger get the better of them. People who started wars over petty arguments. People who killed in a fit of rage. People who destroyed things or people, and people responsible for atrocities committed without reason.

The punishments here, again, largely vary based on the severity of the crime. People whose anger led to the despair and pain of others are left choking on putrid mud at the bottom of a frigid lake. People who are directly responsible for warcrimes and callous destruction are repeatedly dismembered in an endless war and reassembled only to repeat the process.

This layer has a lot of your classic basic demons, as well as hellhounds, devils, and other creatures that enjoy cruelty - many of whom are shapeshifting, violent things.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Sixth layer - Gluttony

Full of people who hoarded to the extent of causing others harm. Rulers of starving kingdoms feasting and wasting countless meals. People who took from others even when they would never use that thing, leaving someone to suffer or perish without it. Greed’s older, meaner sister.

There are two primary means of punishment here, and which one is used is largely dependant on the demon overseeing the sinner: Overindulgence to the point of harm, or starvation - whether from food or water or anything else. Some are made to eat until they burst. Some are made to carry their impossibly heavy hoarded belongings until it crushes them. Some are starved endlessly of food, water, light, company, etc.

Mostly just basic demons here, but many call them “Jurors” because of their task of judging the souls and charging them with appropriate punishment. There *are* a collection of crossroads demons and archdevils here for the power trip as well.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Fifth layer - Greed

Full of people never satisfied by what they had, who always sought to take more by whatever means necessary. Thieves of everything from money to power. People who would take things others cherished, just because they wanted them. People who would willingly sell their souls to get what they want. This is the layer most people really know about, as it’s the one with the most demons who associate with mortals. Crossroads demons make deals weighted in their favor or with hidden catches to satiate the sinner’s greed and collect power from their soul when it comes time for the debt to be paid.

The punishment here can be just about anything; from one’s soul being quite literally destroyed and turned into fuel/power for a crossroads demon who now owns it, to indentured servitude, to torture, to humiliation, etc etc. The demon in possession of the soul chooses the punishment on a case by case basis. But the most frequent outcome is that the person who was sinfully greedy will then be used to fuel *others’* greed - primarily the crossroads demons garnering for power and status among themselves.

Mostly full of crossroads demons - the classic ones we all know who make deals and look basically just humanoid with either black or cat-like eyes. There are some Archdevils here as well, who enjoy the power-struggle game. Hellhounds are common, both wild and kept as pets to drag souls down to face judgement.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Fourth layer - Lust

Full of people who either indulged their carnal appetites to the point of neglecting all else, or people who harmed others for their own pleasure. I doubt I really need to describe this one.

This layer’s punishment varies *greatly*, based on the severity of the crime. People who abandoned their responsibilities to drink and party and indulge in acts of hedonism become the subjects/targets of said hedonism; servers of endless parties but never allowed to participate, forced to entertain without rest as onlookers desire, used by Incubi and Succubi to feed as they wish. However, particularly violent or heinous offenders such as assaulters and r*pists are often promoted to one of the deeper levels - particularly the layer of violence - to face appropriate recourse for their actions. I won’t go more graphic than that.

I already basically said this, but the creatures in this layer are mostly Incubi/Succubi, and Devils. There’s also the highest concentration of cambions here, as they usually are born as a result of an incubus/succubus coupling with a mortal and having a child.

(Rot and gore)

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Third layer - Envy

Full of people who were never happy with what they had, to the point where they would steal from others. People who would beat a starving man to take his food, despite having their own. People who would destroy things others loved simply because they were not theirs. People who would steal and destroy solely because they wanted to have more or be better than others.

This layer’s primary form of torment is decay. The curse of everything you have and then yourself eternally rotting and crumbling to dust. People are often restored a physical form purely to let it waste away; leaving them corroded and “zombified” as they spend eternity doomed to walk a barren, rotting wasteland on decomposing bones.

The demons here are technically classified as “Withers” - omens of darkness and decay that only sometimes have a physical form. The barren wasteland is also crawling with ghouls and gargoyle-like creatures that hunt and feed upon the rotting sinners.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

Second layer - Pride

Full of people who were prideful to the point of narcissism and cruelty. People who would refuse to help a drowning child because it was beneath them to dirty their boots. People who would actively sabotage the health and wellbeing of others to raise themself onto a higher mental pedestal. People who truly believed they were better than everyone else, and would do everything in their power to stay on top.

This layer’s primary form of torment is degredation and destruction. Sinners are reduced to their most helpless, useless selves and left to beg for help from even the lowest of lifeforms. The methods on this one vary - with some ranging from transmutation, to classical torture, to humiliating servitude.

Lots of Imps and Devils in this layer, as they are fond of this kind of punishment.

Layers of Hell Breakdowns:

First layer - Sloth

Full of people who were purposely and needlessly slothful. People who refused kindness in favor of laziness. People who would rot in a filthy room as their loves ones starved around them, though they could have saved them with a single trip into town. This is not depression, this is cowardice and negligence that has led to harm.

This layer’s primary form of torment is largely the same: the sinners are constricted into claustrophobic coffins or tombs, which are then completely and eternally sealed; leaving the soul to lay still and helpless forever. You want to be slothful? Now you can never move again.

Not many remarkable demons or creatures here. Just a population of basic demons and cambions, largely referred to as “The Wardens”.

I have reworked how my layers of hell work, instead of just straight-up using the nine layers from Dante’s Inferno! I tyink these fit a bit better with the gods and types of actual sin in this universe, rather than one of the worst things a person can do is like, heresy. Which doesn’t make sense here. So!

Inspired loosely by a mix of Dante’s Inferno and the concept of the seven deadly sins, most of these are fairly self-explanitory. However, I can (and probably will) do a breakdown of each layer separately!

i was wondering, i forgot if u mentioned this or not but are fae and demons immortal?

Technically yes! So neither of them are completely invulnerable, they can get sick or hurt and if it’s bad enough it CAN kill them, but it’s INCREDIBLY hard to actually get to that point. In theory, if one takes real good care of themself, they can live forever
