I love how much Heartstopper emphasises queer COMMUNITY and how important it is to see other people like you. Nick finding the courage to hold hands with Charlie after seeing an older gay couple. The rainbow ocean reaching out to Ben at the queer art exhibition. Coach Singh telling Nick about her wife and promising to protect him from homophobes on the rugby team. Nick watching Tara and Darcy kissing on the dance floor and realising he can be both happy and queer. Elle meeting other trans people at the art school and feeling at home.

Heartstopper constantly shows that surviving as a queer person is a group effort and it’s not only accurate, but comforting to queer youth. It’s a plot point that only a queer person could have the conscience to write.

So, for week three of February Friday, @februaryfridayevents I decided to go a bit more meta. I’ve been rereading the book and making notes about what we actually know of the podcast, beyond the extracts we have. I’ve catergorised this into what is in the podcast and what format it takes in (details on running time, format etc.) Not sure if this is as interesting to everyone else but I found it fun!

Universe City Content

It is set in the 26th century

It is formatted as a distress call

Every episode starts with ‘Hello, I hope someone is listening’

The protagonist is Radio Silence, who is agender (being referred to with they/them) and either bisexual or pansexual (according to Frances Radio has a range of love interests across a range of genders)

Radio’s voice changes from male, female and androgynous, speaking in a ‘classic, WW2 radio accent’

Radio wears a full suit and gloves (which they don’t take off) and is a ‘suit-wearing student detective’

Radio has pink, chin length hair

Radio has ‘special powers’ of some kind

Radio has a lunar bike

Radio has allies - Vulpes, Atlas, Toulouse (voiced by Frances), Chester, Marine, Jupiter, Atom

Enemies - monsters, demons, androids, the Governors,

It is set in Universe City, ‘a sci-fi, monster-infested university’

Universe City’s settings include the Dark Blue Building, Lonely Road

Letters to February is a recurring segment, towards the end of the episode

Every episode ends with the song ‘Nothing left For Us’ with the lyrics: theres nothing left for us anymore/why arent you listening/why arent you listening to me/theres nothing left

Aled began Universe City in 2011, after the school was burnt down (February 4th, 2011) but before Carys left (Summer 2011), frances has tweeted about it in april 2011, so it was before this time

Aled and Daniel worked on the early episodes together

They both perform in the song, Daniel on bass, Aled on guitar

Frances does art, which is usually a gif that is repeated

Aled is initially anonymous, known as ‘the creator’

The episodes are 20 minutes long and posted on Fridays

Aled has under 50,000 subscribers when he tells Frances he is running it (page 41) and each episode has 5,000-6,000 views before the ‘ghost school’ episode

More Heartstopper headcanons that make me happy :)

• Tao is shit at getting gifts so insists on an annual Secret Santa

• Nick keeps Polaroids of Charlie in his wallet

• Tori had a Hunger Games themed party as an 8 year old - largely to dissuade other kids from turning up

• Nellie sleeps in Nick's room while he's at uni, every night

• Charlie unties and reties his laces each time he puts on / takes off shoes whereas Nick fucking STOMPS his feet in, all the heels of his shoes are wrinkled and the bows haven't been redone in YEARS and he vehemently defends his actions because IT SAVES VALUABLE TIME CHARLIE - WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH TEN SECONDS NICK - YOU DONT NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING

• not a headcanon that makes me happy but i would like to add that i think Nick's dad tied them for him and little Nick knew he wouldn't see his dad again for a while so wanted to preserve them :(

• Tara gets butterfly locs and a septum ring at uni

• Sahar collects Vinyls

• Harry gives a chaotic wedding speech for Nick and Charlie (Emmett from Twilight Breaking Dawn vibes)

• Charlie learnt Spanish properly while at uni, joined the Spanish society and stayed with his abuelos for two months of the the holidays every year, sends Nick the ugliest tourist postcards he could find

• Sarah can't help but tear up (after Nick and Charlie left the room of course) on Mother's Day because not only did Nick get her the cutest necklace with her birthstone on it but Charlie got her a bouquet of her favourite flowers (white tulips)

• Nick, under the consumption of excessive amounts of WKD, gets his flatmates to give him a haircut, resulting in the dodgiest curtain fringe ever (cant even grow it out normally again for three months, the poor bastard)

• Sarah and Jane run the cake stall together at the summer fête (Nick bakes most of the cupcakes obviously)

• Charlie slept with all his teddies as a kid cos he didn't want any to feel left out

• Darcy had a massive hot wheels collection

• Tao and Elle broke up for a year or so but still hyped each other up on Insta and messaged a lot, ended up getting back together when Tao surprised Elle at one of her exhibitions at fashion school

• Darcy refers to herself and Charlie as 'the orphans' due to a lot of late night, drunken rambling

• Charlie spends work experience in a music therapy centre
