Fox News celebrated Black History Month with five-second clips highlighting the achievements of African-Americans. However, as Media Matters excellently points out, “Let’s take a look at how at how Fox News covers issues that affect African-Americans throughout the rest of the year.”

The video shows the network typically frames discussions about African-Americans and blackness around criminality, cultural degeneracy and racial inferiority, painting a very broad, disrespectful and stereotypical image of a diverse group that has made great contributions to American society.

I've been beating myself up over not meeting my goals for my freelancing project, and I decided I can't live like this. Not when I'm otherwise loving my time abroad. Not when I actually enjoy the people I'm meeting and topics I'm researching. 

Whenever my friends ask me how my work's going, I always downplay it: "I'm not doing a good job at x…" or "It's fine, but it's not important anyway…" I do it to protect myself -- if I acknowledge my failure, no one else can use it to attack me.

But I realized it doesn't work that way. People take cues about you/your life from YOU. If you don't value what you do, no one will do it for you.

I also know that I don't work well when under negative stress, when I feel disempowered, or when I feel like the odds are against me. And then that energy spreads to different parts of my life: e.g. I hate the way I look or I feel like I don't deserve certain kinds of love/friendships.

So I'm going to start being my own cheerleader. I'm doing the best I can. I've written strong, thorough articles here. I will write as many of those as I can. If I feel like I have to give up on a specific goal, I am not a failure or a quitter. Whatever I accomplish here is enough.

I’ve spent almost two decades teaching in English primary schools, which serve multiracial, multicultural, multifaith communities. I want to explore two things I have noticed.

1)    Almost without exception, whenever children are asked to write a story in school, children of colour will write a story featuring white characters with ‘traditional’ English names who speak English as a first language.

2)    Teachers do not discuss this phenomenon.

Furthermore, simply pointing these two things out can lead to some angry responses in my experience.

Why are you making an issue of race when children are colourblind?”

is an example of the sort of question that sometimes gets asked.

Well let’s look at that. If children were writing stories where the race of characters was varied and random, there might be some merit in claiming that children are colourblind. However, even proponents of racial colourblindness do not argue that all people are White… and English. They argue that race no longer matters. If that’s true, why are young children of colour and young white children writing exclusively about white characters?

Marsha P. Johnson, one of the leaders of the Stonewall riots, co founded S.T.A.R., which in part provided housing for homeless trans and queer youth.

Eartha Kitt, civil rights movement, anti apartheid, blacklisted for decades due to anti war statements made to the first lady

And btw, these women fought for their rights with signs, with their voices, with their bodies. They fought for their right to work, to be safe, and to be respected, whether it’s while they’re half naked or at a protest or both. You don’t get to decide what rights are important, and how we fight for them.
