Mastodon with Opeth and Ghost

It's been a while since I've been to the Myth for a metal show, last time was Sevendust and Five Finger Death Punch, both respectively in Dec 2011. Upon arriving the usual 93x crew were scouring the parking lot looking "cool" as usual. Parking as usual sucked an as a result I missed being able to get any shots of the unusual opener, Ghost. They have a mock religious look to them with the lead singer having a pope-like shtick and the other guys dressing in black robes with hoods... spooky! The stage set up had faux stained glass in the back, very cathedral-esque. Musically, they were pretty different, I missed the first two songs, but it's very general rock with some smooth vocals, reminded me a lot of Michale Graves formerly of the Misfits. Upon further investigation while sitting in a slowly filling club, Ghost is originally from Stockholm, Sweden, sports incredibly satanic lyrics, has only two official members (the lead singer and the Nameless Ghouls (everyone else)) and prides themselves on anonymity. I get it, trying to be a little like Slipknot and Mushroomhead, while having a stage show kind of like Black Sabbath and sounding like no one in particular, ok, well, no offense but now that their set is over, I have already allowed their image to vanish from my minds eye. As I'm standing in the pit waiting for Opeth, I find out that one of the Opeth members fell off the bus and got injured somehow. Sure enough, they set up Mastodon's stage and so here comes Mastodon. As I type this, I hope Opeth still goes on! A stage hand came out and announced that in fact, Opeth will not be performing tonight. Bummer. Moments before Mastodon came on, the crowd gently to progressively yelling, chanted "Mastodon... Mastodon... Mastodon..." and out they came. First of all, I am not a huge fan of Mastodon, but after watching them perform live, watching how intricately and seamless they perform each song with almost an individual role that comes together as a unified song, I think I'm going to be investing in some of their tracks. They don't have an intense performance, no off the wall bouncing, yet they wield a steady intensity that leaks out onto the young and older crowd while banging their heads, light moshing and limited crowd surfing.

Overall it was a pretty good show despite not being a huge prog-rock fan.

UNTIMELY DEMISE North American Tour Is Initiated

UNTIMELY DEMISE have begun their Spring tour of the western half of Canada and the United State, as the trek is booted into action with a hometown Saskatchewan show this evening. The outfit will take their blazing modernized classic thrash to the highways of North America over the next three weeks, including performances with Massacre, Exmortus, Excruciator, Hatchet, labelmates Mares of Thrace and even a headlining slot at San Jose's Beyond The Realms of Metal Festival.

  This trek was booked in conjunction with the vinyl edition of UNTIMELY DEMISE's celebrated debut full-length, City Of Steel, the album produced by ex-Megadeth/King Diamond guitarist Glen Drover. Limited to 1,000 copies worldwide, the LP features a full-color insert and a bonus track of the anthem "My Tragedy," from the band's 2009-released Full Speed Metal EP. The band will be dispensing them to the public in exchange for denominations of currency throughout the tour.

  Deadmau5, as producer Joel Zimmerman is known to many in the electronic music circle, is an enigma as he is an artist. Able to craft catchy, easily digestible music that ranges from dubstep influence to trance, all entrenched firmly in the realm of house. 4X4=12 found Deadmau5 solely on the dance floor, For Lack of A Better Name saw progressive house take suit, but the artist's most compelling work can be seen on 2008's Random Album Title.

  The album starts off with “Sometimes Things Get, Whatever”, which is driven by the pounding house beat, the synthesized vocal hook, which deteriorates and distorts as the song progresses, and also a bass line that gives the song an eerie feel. This song really begins the album off well as it gives a taste of what's to come: Catchy house beats mixed with enough progressive elements to keep things interesting and add flavor and originality.

  The next peak hits with Brazil - 2nd Edit, which is a display of Random Album Title's almost ambient chilled-out feeling. Synth stabs litter the song, and the pounding drums do come back, but it's all in a much more subdued matter then found on 4x4=12 or even For Lack of a Better Name. This feeling continues with the Kaskade helped "I Remember". Mixing the vocal use of Kaskade, as well as the sidechained synths with the drums and piano stabs of Deadmau5 combines for a very solid song. At 9:07 long, it does drag a tad bit more than the 4 minute radio cut, but this is not something that really distracts from the beauty of the song.

  "Faxing Berlin" is one of the most popular songs from Random Album Title, and it's 2:30 running length keeps things tight and smooth, allowing for the melody to repeat without becoming stale. Deadmau5 excels at adding layers and sounds subtly and this song is a perfect example. The piano beginning slowly keeps getting thicker and thicker and it's done so well that it's not easily obvious that anything has been added yet it sounds different. For as much as this song is the known fan favorite, it is "Arguru" that takes the cake.

  Beginning with a nice piano melody, "Arguru", which written in memory of Juan Antonio Arguelles Rius, a well-known audio-software developer and musician, begins in a subtle way. The piano and strings combine to put the mind at ease, and really set the bar for what is to come. When the main pulse of the song finally hits at 1:30, it is a drastic, yet welcoming change. The beat drops in at around the 2:05 mark, and "Arguru" has finally begun to mold. The listener gets more of Deadmau5's uncanny melody ability and synth stabs, and the groove on this song is infectious. The song ebbs and flows, and even if that's cliché, it's the best way to describe the way the song hits peaks and valleys, all the while maintaining the groove and beat that form it's solid backbone. It's the pinnacle of Random Album Title and the strength of this song alone makes the album warrant a listen.

  Random Album Title sees Deadmau5 explore realms of trance, ambient (almost), and his traditional house, and it is pulled off exceptionally well. With everyone meticulously crafted and not a single shred of filler or dud on the album, it is truly an album that needs to be in every electronic music aficionado’s collection.

ROSE FUNERAL announces Spring tour dates with Pathology and The World We Knew! ROSE FUNERAL will be emerging from winter this Spring with a month's worth of tour dates. The band will be joining Pathology and The World We Knew throughout April and May in venues nationwide.The Spring Slasher Tour kicks off April 6th in Richmond, VA with all three bands and ends on April 21st in Chicago. From April 22nd - April 29th, both ROSE FUNERAL and The World We Knew embark onThe Spring Fling portion of the tour. May 2nd-May 8th, fans can check out ROSE FUNERAL on a short string of headlining dates across Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kentucky.

  The band released their new album, Heaven Sent… Hellbound, on August 23rd, 2011 with Rising Records with distribution through Candlelight Records. The album is produced by world-famous record producer Fredrik Nordström (At the Gates, In Flames, Opeth) and the artwork is illustrated by famous artist Sam Shearon (Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Fear Factory).

 Moving Mountains will be direct support on Coheed and Cambria’s spring tour which launches April 29 and winds down May 18.

 The Westchester, NY ambient indie rockers will be out in support of their upcoming New Light EP which will be released on April 24, both digitally and on vinyl, via Triple Crown Records. The EP consists of acoustic and re-interpreted versions of songs that originally appeared on the band’s breakthrough 2011 LP Waves and their 2007 debut Pneuma.

Doom metal progenitors SAINT VITUS have completed the first video from their forthcoming new record 'Lillie: F-65'. The video, for the track Let Them Fall, was produced and directed by Michael Panduro of Siegfred Productions (CEPHALIC CARNAGE, ROTTEN SOUND, NO AND THE MAYBES) for SCION A/V and shot in Copenhagen, Denmark. Stills from the forthcoming clip can be seen at the official SAINT VITUS Facebook page.

'Lillie: F-65' will be released by Season of Mist in May 2012. The album, their first new full length in 17 years, reunites the unmistakable guitar playing of co-founder Dave Chandler with the deeply resonant vocals of hard rock legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich.

On March 23rd SAINT VITUS will release a limited edition 7'' single for the song Blessed Night (also from 'Lillie: F-65'). The B-side has a live version of their classic song Look Behind You. The 7" single is limited to 1000 hand-numbered copies and is available for pre-order.

"Breathing the Fire" and "Beyond the Permafrost" to Receive Deluxe Reissue Treatment 

  

PROSTHETIC RECORDS is proud to announce they will be reissuing "Breathing the Fire," and "Beyond the Permafrost," their first two releases from American metal masters, SKELETONWITCH. The deluxe, limited gatefold packages or pre-order, now, at the Prosthetic Store, and will ship by the end of March, in conjunction with the band's U.S. tour with The Black Dahlia Murder, Nile and labelmates Hour of Penance.

Pictured above is the new "Fire Splatter" edition of "Breathing The Fire" vinyl, one of three versions that will be available of the band's 2009 release. See a close up of the LP, below.

  The "Fire Splatter" LPs come in a new gatefold Stoughton "tip-on" jacket, and unlike the first and second pressings that sold out long ago, they come with a lyric insert so that Andrei Bouzikov's gatefold artwork appears unobstructed. This version is limited to 500 copies.

  "Breathing The Fire" will also be available on heavy duty 180-gram black vinyl (also limited to 500 pieces), in addition to a very limited edition red/yellow half-and-half 2-color vinyl that will only be available EXCLUSIVELY through the Prosthetic Store.

  PROSTHETIC will also be reissuing the band's critically acclaimed 2007 break through, "Beyond the Permafrost."  This marks the first time that Prosthetic will release an LP version of this burner.  It will also be available in three variants, all of which come in new gatefold Stoughton "tip-on" jackets as well: 180-gram black vinyl (approx. 500 pieces), "Permafrost splatter" (blue on white, approx. 500 pieces) and limited white/blue half-and-half 2-color wax that will be a Prosthetic Store exclusive.

  The black vinyl versions of both titles will be available in select North American stores on April 10, but pre-orders will begin shipping around the third week of March.

  Lastly, there are a limited amount of "Forever Abomination" blue marble pressing of their latest release, "Forever Abomination, still available.  This particular release comes with two free posters. Measurements and more info can be found here.
