A frog…..is just a really green gentleman.
While I wholeheartedly support the movement to reduce plastic pollution, let’s not stop at straws. Fishing nets account for an estimated 46% of ocean plastic waste, so if you’re looking for a way to reduce your personal impact, boycotting commercial fishing and not eating seafood would be a great starting point.
Actually not eating fish is necessary. Eat fish from farms!
Unfortunately, farmed fish are no better for the environment than wild caught. In modern aquaculture practices, fish are crowded in unnatural settings, with waste products, including faeces and dead fish flushed into the surrounding waters where they contaminate local ecosystems. These captive fish must also be fed, requiring 37 pounds of “feeder” fish to produce just 1 pound of commercially sold fish. There is just no way to sustainably farm or catch fish in anywhere near the numbers we currently demand, in fact, If we were talking purely environmentally, seafood ranks alongside beef and dairy as some of the most destructive foods you can eat.
