Imagine reaching your goal weight. Imagine not having to try on 10 different outfits before going somewhere cause they all make you look fat. Imagine being able to sit down and not having your pants suffocate you. Imagine going to the gym and not being self conscious cause people can see your roles when you use the machinery. Imagine all your friends wondering how you're so skinny. Imagine being able to accept food every now and then when people offer. Imagine your family not criticizing you for what you eat anymore. Imagine your mom and sister being jealous about how flat your stomach is and how much weight you've lost. Imagine being able to do stuff without feeling self conscious about your weight. Imagine...

ONE-SHOT: You've been dealing with an eating disorder for quite some time now and when Hange finally finds out, you don't know how to deal with it
“Thinner Is Better“
Hange x Reader
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Slowly inhale through your nose, let your lungs fill in with the fresh air.
Then just as slowly exhale from your mouth, let your ribcage close-up and flatten your stomach.
Flatten it. Do it.
Empty it.
And with that simple command, you pushed your finger into your mouth and triggered your gag reflex. Vomit climbed up your throat and into your mouth, causing you to spit it out into the toilet bowl.
Just like that, tonight's dinner was excreted.
You sat on the bathroom floor with a sigh, wiping your forehead then patting your lips. Looking down at yourself you trailed your hand down to your stomach, feeling it up. A frown creased your features. You were not satisfied quite yet.
Falling back into your previous breathing pattern, you calmed down your upset belly before leaning over the toilet bowl once again.
The door of the bathroom flung open and you froze, eyes growing wide. Your name followed by a gasp had you clutching the porcelain. "What's wrong? Are you sick?"
Hange came to your side, kneeling down so you could both be at the same level. Goosebumps appeared all over your arms and you shivered as her hand came to sit on your back. "Y-Yeah, I'm a little nauseous for some reason. Don't worry, I'm fine."
Looking at you worriedly, she nodded her head slowly before her hand slipped down to help you up. "Here, let's go to the sink to get you cleaned-" Her voice faltered the moment she touched your palm and you felt her whole body tense.
Your name fell from her lips, the tone she used quietly and almost horrified. "Why are your fingers wet?" She looked you dead in the eye and you had to refrain from swallowing.
"Oh I'm so sorry, it's like that because I was covering my mouth u-until I reached the bathroom. I didn't want to vomit all over the floor, y-y'know?" You smiled wryly, trying to convince her as you pulled your hand from out of her grasp. "You probably shouldn't be touching it. It's kind of gro-"
"Why are your fingers covered in saliva?" Your name came out as more of a demand now and her fingers clamped down on your wrist, her grip on it tightening. "What did you do?!"
The waterworks began to well up the corners of your eyes so you quickly averted your gaze to the bathroom floor.
She had figured you out. Damn it.
Hange was too smart not to realize what was going on.
Without a second to spare Hange pulled on your arm and dragged you out of the room and to your bed to sit down on. She went back inside the bathroom to get a towel to wipe your hands and face.
"I've noticed you eating less in the mess hall," Hange focused her gaze on cleaning your hands, her voice steady. "Have been for the past few weeks. You look sickly too."
You didn't say anything. You didn't know what to say.
"Why aren't you eating enough?" Hange asked, finally letting go to look at you, her eyes filled with so much worry that caused your stomach to clench painfully. You hated seeing her distressed. And you hated it even more if you were the reason.
So you remained silent.
"What were you thinking? Purposefully emptying your stomach when you need the food for all the nutrients and to keep your body healthy and, more importantly, strong! Here in the Survey Corps especially you cannot survive without the required strength." Hange's words were getting squeezed out of her throat, painfully so, as she was trying to keep the tears at bay.
"Do you have any idea how horribly you are treating yourself?" A small whimper escaped you and Hange placed both her hands on your shoulders, squeezing lightly.
"You are so beautiful, I don't understand why you are doing this to yourself," Hange sighed and you bit your lip so it wouldn't tremble. "Whatever you thought is reasonable enough to convince you to do such disturbing actions, stop it. Don't let it affect you because it is in no way good enough."
A sniff was all it took for your tears to finally break the barrier and roll down your cheeks. "I'm sorry," your throat croaked and you collapsed in her arms, your head resting on her chest. "I-I can't help it. All these toxic thoughts, they just invade my head and don't leave me alone until-," a hiccup escaped your lips and Hange rubbed your back soothingly, "-until I submit to them."
Hange's heart felt like it was being squeezed to the point of almost bursting. "Why didn't you tell me?" She wrapped an arm around you, keeping you close as you clenched your fists with a bunch of her shirt. "How could I? It's not that simple to express."
It was true that you had wanted to tell someone, let them know what you were going through, but you could not find the words. Or even the strength in your voice.
"Thank God I found out," Hange murmured into your ear and you sobbed. "You need someone to help you and I'll be that someone okay?" You nodded your head, burying your face in the crook of her neck. "Thank you... thank you so much. I want to, I really want to go back to my normal self."
Hange tightened her protective embrace, "you will. I will make sure of that."
The crying continued as Hange held you, rocking you slowly to calm you down.
She was going to help you. Help you pass the barrier of self-hatred and insecurity, as well as your appetite.

BPD Symptoms and Features
**please note: the following post was originally posted by kellyann-graceful-warrior and has been reposted here by me and bolded and italicized to reflect which symptoms i feel apply to myself**
BPD is a chronic mental disorder of emotional dysregulation+hypersensitivity due to factors such as:
-A result of an overactive autonomic nervous system (fight or flight- functions associated to panic, anxiety, anger reactions, etc) -An under-active parasympathetic nervous system (The system that is responsible to regulate the autonomic nervous system) -Less active and smaller in volume abnormalities in the limbic system which has functions linked to: emotional reactions, memory, decision making, motivation, behavior, learning and developmental ability, thought pattern, instincts, psychotic symptoms, seizures, and senses/the way the body perceives external stimuli. -Reduced volume in frontal lobe which has functions linked to: decision making, communication responses, ability to comprehend consequences, emotional-based memories and triggers, and relations to people, events and situations. -Abnormal blood flow to parts of the brain that control emotions, resulting in one to be more reactive -Emotional reactions firing off 20% longer -A ton of other factors Here are the 9 main symptoms noted in the criteria and research. 1. Extreme reactions to real or perceived/feared abandonment, rejection, or criticism 2. Splitting and idealization/devaluation 3. Identity disturbance- impoverished self image/self esteem and sense of self, dysphoria, despising ones self, and extreme instability and no direction towards the future, aspirations, goals, [career] plans, values, etc 4. Impulsive behavior- a sense of urgency to relieve intensity of emotions from stimuli, often self damaging (spending sprees, binge eating, steal, substance abuse, etc). 5. Reoccurring suicidal behavior/ideations (gestures, extensive thoughts, planning, role playing) and self-harm 6. Intense rapid cycling of affective instability due to hypersensitivity+dysregulation reactions 7. Depressive symptoms- chronic feelings of emptiness, frequent feelings of being miserable, shame, self-inferiority, and extreme difficulty recovering from such feelings 8. Intense anger and/or aggression reactions- frequent anger easily triggered from incidents 9. Paranoia/panic and dissociation reactions (often in response to stresses/anxieties) [People with BPD may often experience reactions/episodes of psychosis- paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, body dysmorphic figures, etc, as well]
Then there are hundreds of other symptoms and features to this very complex, and unfortunately, highly stigmatized and misunderstood disorder. Here are a few indicated in research. (Note- One with the disorder may display some or most of these, but nothing is guaranteed as each person with the disorder is an individual, so don’t use these as assumptions. Some may not have the same symptoms as others, and no person with it is portrayed the same way. They are rather a guideline to mental health workers because they are often seen and developed from the disorder and symptoms). (ALSO NOTE- Others without it can obviously ‘display/relate’ to some of this from time to time once you take a look, but the reasoning, cause, severity, and pattern is different and this is a chronic disorder. Please note it’s completely different than that and that this post is just for awareness/education purposes since not many know about it- how to deal, what to expect, etc. Percentages show that 8/10 of these individuals attempt suicide, while 1/10 complete it. Stigma and assumptions don’t help, but awareness does. 10. Anxiety, nervousness 11. Headaches/migraines are common 12. Seizures 13. Higher nociception (pain tolerance)- Studies show alterations in pain processing in over 50% of those with BPD. The result of this comes from different systematic responses and antinociception and may be a result of long-term self harm behavior in some cases). 14. Distorted/irregular eating patterns- reduced food intake, impoverished diet, etc 15. Obsessive compulsive features- intrusive thoughts in the thought pattern/processes, repetitive behavior as a result of self harm, paranoia, distress, etc, and repetitive speech, to name a few 16. Self discipline/work orientation as a result of OCD features 17. Attachment 18. Extreme reckless-daring behavior 19. Baiting 20. Unstable relationships 21. “Always” and “Never” statements/reactions (splitting) 22. Sleep deprivation or irregular sleeping patterns 23. Voice changing 24. “Acting out” 25. Extreme curiosity and interest 26. Dependency 27. Sarcasm 28. Promiscuity 29. Mimicking/mirroring 30. Flashbacks 31. Nightmares 32. Difficulty processing information 33. Difficulty focusing and concentrating and poor attention span 34. Consistent/radical change of appearance 35. Certain feelings of fear, negativity, or rejection of authority/people of “high importance” in their mind. 36. Alluring/seductive behavior 37. Extreme need for acceptance 38. A need to prove themselves over and over as identity may be graded on a scale of what was done that very day 39. Extreme apathy, boredom, dullness, and indifference 40. ‘Flat affect”- lack of emotional reactivity and inability to express/show emotions due to depression, absence of emotional response 41. Creative thinking 42. Studies show some are able to read others easily from such hypersensitivity; however, often mistaking neutrality as anger probably as a result of symptoms 43. Isolation 44. Defensive 45. Magical thinking (assumed correlation, interconnection, etc) 46. Fantasizing 47. Panic attacks 48. Anxiety Attacks 49. Hypersensitivity to caffeine, alcohol, some sugars and foods. Often described as being “allergic” to such things as it causes reactions from hypersensitivity and symptoms. 50. Memory lapses- a result of dissociation, intense reactions, etc 51. Extreme perfectionism 52. Avoidance 53. Euphoric reactions 54. Detachment 55. Avoidance of eye contact 56. Difficulty transitioning with life aspects such as changes to plans and arrangements 57. Difficulty with awareness 58. Sensitivity to senses- light, sounds, temperatures, etc- from hypersensitivity 59. Resistance 60. Difficulty with decision making, poor decisions, and/or indecisiveness, insecurity 61. Difficulty completing tasks 62. “Rapid” or excessive speech
63. Restlessness, difficulty relaxing, feelings of “being on edge.”
64. Extreme sense of security, comfort, and connection with animals/nature and inanimate objects such as transitional objects
65. Undermining a goal, success, or relationship
66. Often occurs with PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) or worse reactions to menstrual cycles because of the hypersensitive and systematic changes
67. Extreme difficulty and lack of object consistency (inability to recall that people or objects are ‘still there,’ consistent, and reliable when they are not currently being physically seen/there and difficulty maintaining these feelings
68. Flight of ideas, racing thoughts, rapid thought patterns
69. Brief remission of symptoms in response to certain events (positive reactions)
70. Disrupted or delayed life aspects- education, relationships, jobs, etc
No particular order. If you may need a source, example, description/explanation for more understanding for any of these, feel free to ask :)
can you please explain the symptoms and examples of borderline personality disorder? i really need to know, thank you! (tag this as BPD1)
Hi there!
Firstly, every individual with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is different, and may exhibit different combinations of symptoms. According to the DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2000), borderline personality disorder is diagnosed when there is a persistent pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, mood and self-image, as well as distinct impulsive behaviour, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts. In order to get diagnosed with this disorder, you must fulfill at least 5 of the following 9 criteria:
Do you have an intense fear of being left alone, which causes you to act in ways that, on reflection, seem out of the ordinary or extreme, such as constantly phoning somebody (but not including self-harming or suicidal behaviour)?
Do you have a pattern of intense and unstable relationships with other people that switch between thinking you love that person and they’re wonderful to hating that person and thinking they’re terrible?
Do you ever feel you don’t have a strong sense of your own self and are unclear about your self-image?
Do you engage in impulsive activities in two areas that are potentially damaging, such as unsafe sex, drug abuse or reckless spending (but not including self-harming or suicidal behaviour)?
Have you made repeated suicide threats or attempts in your past and engaged in self-harming?
Do you have severe mood swings, such as feeling intensely depressed, anxious or irritable, which last from a few hours to a few days?
Do you have long-term feelings of emptiness and loneliness?
Do you have sudden and intense feelings of anger and aggression, and often find it difficult to control your anger?
When you find yourself in stressful situations, do you have feelings of paranoia, or do you feel like you’re disconnected from the world or from your own body, thoughts and behaviour?
However, there are 526 different possible combinations of BPD symptoms so no two sufferers are alike. I myself have struggled with BPD for many years so I can give you some examples from my life and explain some of the symptoms I struggle with.
Black and White (dichotomous thinking) can be a big issue for some sufferers. It is characterized by all-or-nothing thinking, seeing situations or people as either wholly good or wholly bad with little in between, and in inability to simultaneously see the good and bad together.
‘Splitting’ is a symptoms I struggle with, and it’s a term used to describe when a person with BPD flips from believing someone is all good to believing they are all bad - I tend to split on people I am close to such as family/boyfriend as opposed to strangers/acquaintances. I also split on myself, where all my core values and beliefs about life flip. I tend to either feel immensely superior to humanity, or infinitely inferior and unworthy of existing.
Transient dissociation can occur during times of stress or extreme emotion. This can involve depersonalisation (feeling I am not real, not recognising myself), derealisation (feeling the world is not really and everything around me is disconnected. It can feel like I’m watching myself doing things but I’m not actually engaging with it.
Moulding myself to suit other people’s needs or how I want to be perceived to fit in. I can act very differently depending on who I am spending time with. I also prefer to have fewer but closer friendship than many different but less intense ones.
Impulsivity can be very difficult to deal with, because many people with BPD don’t have the barrier between having a thought and acting on it. For me this can look like very erratic behaviours like randomly jumping in a river, or impulsively spending lots of money, or taking drugs, or impulsively self harming.
Emotional intensity - BPD sufferers are described to have ‘the emotional sensitivity equivalent to a third degree burn victim’. It can feel like perpetual psychological agony or emptiness. We tend to feel everything or feel nothing.
Warped perceptions in interpersonal relationships can manifest as misinterpreting other people’s words and actions as a personal vendetta against me, and a lot of paranoia!
I used to struggle a lot with rage, and would lash out at my family in every sense, for no logical reason. I would just be filled with irrational anger that I didn’t know what to do with.
These are only my personal experiences though, and you may or may not relate to some of these symptoms. If you are worried that you are struggling with BPD or any of its traits I would really encourage you to speak to a mental health professional or a doctor. Many sufferers have chronic suicide ideation, and 10% of sufferers will complete suicide. Please don’t be afraid to reach out if you or someone you know is suffering <3
There is help available for this condition. Although there are no recommended medications for BPD, antidepressants and antipsychotics can help to alleviate symptoms. Therapies such as MBT and DBT have proven to be very successful in treating this disorder. There are also some useful links giving more information about borderline personality disorder:

Hey I’m bpd but tbh I know nothing about the disorder and that’s kinda sad. I’ve had this diagnosis for a couple years and idk why I’ve never looked into it. Could you possibly help me understand this better?
that’s not sad ! when i was diagnosed i knew literally nothing , i’d never even heard of it! i mean now i’m a Pro ™ bc ive been diagnosed for like 5 years and i’ve been running this blog for nearly 4 years but not knowing too much and not looking into it isnt sad at all. i’m going to give you a run through of the DSM symptoms and what they mean to you, okay?
WELCOME TO BORDERLINETRAUMATIZED’S GUIDE TO BPD SYMPTOMS
so first is “frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, whether real or perceived” this is one of the big ones. as a borderline it is very common for you to assume even the slightest change in a persons mannerism or unexpected action/response means they hate you and are going to abandon you. some borderlines will profusely apologize even when there’s nothing to apologize for (i’m so sorry if i’m annoying , i’m sorry i’m a burden, i’m sorry you have to deal with me). some will repeatedly ask if the person is mad at them because they feel a desperate need for reassurance and so they can rectify it if they are mad so that they aren’t left behind. they may spam text messages until the person answers to elicit a response, or they may even push away the person because if you abandon them, they won’t have the chance to abandon you and it will “hurt less.”
then there’s “a pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation.” this is the symptom which is commonly referred to as “splitting.” borderlines have a very difficult time holding long term relationships, in part because of their fear of abandonment either making them cling too tightly or push away the people that they love. borderlines are really sensitive to what we assume are slights, and if a person doesn’t act the way we want them to, we may get incredibly angry and begin to hate the person. you can have some really intense thoughts and even lash out at them because your brain is just telling you how terrible they are and you hate them. this happens a lot if they’re being “ignored”, at least for me. “okay, you’re ignoring me? you won’t answer my texts? well fuck you, you fucking suck and honestly i don’t even like you, i can find better.” but then on the other hand, there’s intense love for that person. note that this generally isn’t for every relationship people with bpd have, its for relationships you consider close and important to you. so with idealization, this person is like your sun moon and stars. they mean everything to you and can do no wrong. if they asked you to jump off a bridge, you honestly might. you’ll excuse all of their toxic behavior and put them above everybody else. they’re YOUR person. people often refer to these relationships as their “fp” or “favorite person.” the intensity of these relationships and the destructiveness is the swing between hate and love can lead to either you self destructing the relationship or the other person becoming very overwhelmed and leaving.
the next symptom is “markedly persistent and unstable self-image or sense of self.” here’s the personality disorder part! pwbpd (people with bpd) often feel like they don’t really know who they are. their personality is a conglomerate of the people around them, and who they are with one person may be very different from who they are with another. with one of my best friends, i can be a very catty, gossipy person. when i was in an old group of friends, i was very “IM GAY IM GAY LOOK AT ME !!! 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈”. i was doing everything i could to fit in and i cut all my hair and dyed it and wore everything i could find from hot topic. with my next friend group, i dressed entirely in forever 21 and grew out my hair and wore makeup and lipstick that popped. my current fp literally just told me how disgusting she finds cow milk and now i’ve stopped drinking it bc if she doesn’t like it, it must be gross. i bought a $70 skincare routine to match hers. i am who other people want me to be, and that helps me blend in really well. people are always surprised how well we click , but it’s because i’m a reflection of them. i mimic their sense of humor and opinions and mannerisms. it’s a defense mechanism to keep people from abandoning you. you become exactly who they want you to be.
“impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self damaging (eg reckless spending, excessive and unsafe sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating.) this does not include suicidal or self mutilating behavior.” honestly, sometimes we just want to FEEL something. bpd can leave you feeling so drained and like you’re a shell and you’ll do anything to feel something. you’re too impulsive to think about consequences and you just chase whatever will give you some quick dopamine. short term gratification is really intoxicating. some people just honestly don’t care what happens to them either. if i die, i die, and so they do whatever they want.
“recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self mutilating behavior.” this is a difficult one. people with bpd feel SO much pain and distress even from daily life. the distress tolerance that a person without bpd has is so much higher than a pwbpd. the suicide rate is high, and the attempted suicide and hospitalization rate is even higher. but also ... this is controversial , but some borderlines will threaten suicide or give half assed attempts at it (taking a number of pills that is concerning but that they know won’t kill them) as a cry for help or to get people to pay attention to them. sometimes they’ll harm themselves and make sure other people know so that they’ll receive attention and concern. they’ll threaten to kill themselves to keep people from leaving. this is the dark part of bpd that is very embarrassing and is part of what makes people think we’re manipulative. we aren’t, not inherently. but an untreated borderline CAN have some manipulative behaviors. again, we WANT attention, and we don’t want people to abandon us. frantic efforts can be desperate. but also again, i want to stress, the bpd suicide rate and self harm rate is through the roof. it is NOT always about attention and manipulation. we feel genuine mental anguish and it hurts, and sometimes you just want it all to stop.
“affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (eg intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days.” bpd mood swings are killer. at the drop of a hat you can go from top of the world euphoria to bottom of the ocean depression. this can be because your fp reacted in a way that upset you or made you feel burdensome, or you got a bad grade on a test, or even because you fuckin dropped a pencil on the floor. it doesn’t matter. sometimes there isn’t a reason at all! and our anger can be through the roof. the smallest things may set you off, especially when you’re already irritable. somebody asking too many questions or standing too close can make you angry enough to explode when you normally wouldn’t. you may feel extra anxious that your fp is going to leave you for absolutely no reason. the mood swings can be daily or every couple of days and set off by very small things; if anything. it’s frustrating and draining to not know when your mood is going to change or why, and know thay this isn’t how you want to react and later on regret it. the GOOD thing is that these mood swings don’t last too long, but i mean.. it’s only good after they’ve passed.
“chronic feelings of emptiness.” i feel like i’ve touched on this a lot in my previous answers, because honestly those are the reasons we feel empty. bpd and depression have a high comorbidity. and when you are left alone with your thoughts you can feel like a shell.
“innapropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (eg, frequent displays of temper, constant anger, or recurrent physical fights).” again, our emotions SUCK. we can be irritable and angry all the time. i know personally i feel like i’m in a perpetual state of anger. everybody and everything makes me mad and i overreact over everything. and it’s hard to keep that to myself. you may blow up over small things that a normal person wouldn’t, say things you don’t mean to hurt the other person, or even get so angry you resort to throwing things and physically getting into it with people. a common term for this is “Borderline Rage,” which is like this intense anger that blocks out everything else. all that you can feel and sometimes it feels like all that you’ve EVER felt is anger. it’s white hot, and you’ll say anything to hurt the other person. you may punch a hole in the wall out of frustration or say the most cutting things you could possibly think of. not every borderline is like this though !! this is the typical borderline experience , but “quiet borderlines” express their anger inwardly, taking it out on themselves through self injurious behaviors.
lastly, “transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.” sometimes our emotions are TOO intense that even our brain can’t handle them. you may feel like you’re having an out of body experience, like you aren’t real or the people around you aren’t real. this is your brain’s way of detaching itself and coping. you may feel so paranoid that you’re certain that every person in the world hates you and you’re a burden and every action somebody takes is an action against you.
i hope this helped!
edit: as a beautiful follower just reminded me, a person with bpd does NOT have to display every single symptom on this list. if you find yourself relating to most but not all, you are still valid !!
I don’t mean to disappear, watch me disappear. There’s a lack of something here and I’m paranoid from all of the thoughts that swarm my head. I try to drown them out with loud music, with liquor from the cabinet, but they’re screaming I am not safe and that you can not be trusted. And I’m digging deeper and deeper into my skin, I call them exorcisms and I watch the evil flow out but the feelings remain. I am left to do what I do best, fade away.
