The “Green Belt” project in the Holy city of Karbala, Iraq is an environmental plan that aims to protect the city from being consumed by the desert. It involves creating a green belt of thousands of fruit bearing trees. The city is planting:
62,000 olive trees
20,500 palm trees
37,000 eucalyptus trees
and 4,200 tamarind trees
These types of trees were chosen for their root strength, as well as food production capabilities. Several nearby wells will provide water for the trees.
You can read more about the project here.
