‘This is an imaginary place from a psychology test that my girlfriend, who’s a psychologist, showed me. You ask someone to visualize a desert, a cube, some stairs, a glass and a horse. The idea is that the person builds up a mental picture. Afterwards the psychologist can describe what’s wrong or what’s right with that person.

The desert is your perception of the world, and the cube is your perception of yourself. Some people draw a cube of metal or glass; some do a massive one and others do a really small one. Stairs represent your friendships. What they are made of, metal or wood, reflects how solid you think your friends are. Also, if the stairs are away from the cube, then you think your friends are far away from yourself. The glass represents love. If there’s no liquid inside it, that person needs love. Also, if the glass is inside the cube, it means you have a good relationship with someone. If it’s outside the cube, it means that maybe the relationship is finished.

The horse represents the desire for life or desire in general. If it’s a white horse then it means innocence. A black horse is a lot less innocent! If the horse is running and very lively, you can say the person is passionate. If one of it’s legs are broken, maybe the person has a problem with erections. It’s a real test that lots of psychologists do to people! The picture I drew is the same one I drew for my girlfriend, and afterwards she told me what it meant. Basically, from now on, I always have that image of the desert in my mind, and the elements change depending on how I’m feeling.’ - Matthew Bellamy
