"There you are," he sighed, relief washing over him as he sat down next to her. She was all alone, sitting at the tip-top of the risers in the quidditch pitch. She had her knees pulled up to her chest, arms wrapped tightly around them. Bella had one half empty bottle of something in her hand, two more lay empty beside her.
"What is it this time?" he asked, tucking his hands in his coat pockets. The night air was crisp and cold, biting at his ears and nose. He looked out over the pitch, a sting hitting him suddenly with the reminder that she wouldn't be here next year. He looked over to her, a knot of concern stitching itself together in his chest. Her eyes were distant and she made no effort to show that she'd even noticed his arrival. "El?" Evan nudged, brushing her hair off her shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," she said. The stability of her voice caught him by surprise. He'd expected a sadness, perhaps even a slur. But he voice was clear and sharp. She wasn't nearly as drunk as he'd thought, but that only managed to worry him more. A younger and more innocent Bella would have been tripping over herself after two drinks. It took more and more liquor to fog the world these days.
"Then why are you out here?"
"I wanted to be alone."
Evan frowned, looking out over the field again. He couldn't rightly argue that. She had a right to her privacy. She sighed, unfolding somehow. She set the bottle aside, straightening up. Bella turned slightly to face him. "Don't look at me like that, Evan. I'm fine."
"Don't you dare lie to me," Evan almost hissed, his words sharp as he turned back to her. "This," he shook his head at her, at the empty bottles on the seats surrounding her, "This is anything but fine."
"I'm not fine as in fine," she looked away as she spoke. She wrapped her jacket tighter around herself, the wind picking up and chilling her. "I'm fine as in, you don't have to worry about me."
He reached in his pocket, pulling out a cigarette and holding it between his teeth. Careful to block the wind, he lit it, taking a long drag before he spoke again. "I do anyway."
Her heart seemed to drop, realizing for the thousandth time that he was ever her guardian. A protector she didn't deserve. She leaned into him, his arm fitting around her shoulders automatically. "I know."
Marlene was silent again. She stared down at the ground below them, biting her lip. It was a stupid question: of course he was a target. If Bella knew that then Marlene’s suspicions were confirmed; Bella was definitely established on the opposite side of the war. Yet here they were, sitting beside each other. She sensed that Bella wasn’t quite reassured by her promise and in a way, Marlene couldn’t blame her. She’d been in the hospital wing more times this year than she had in the rest of her schooling life. She’d slacked off and she’d underestimated her opponents. But she realised that now and if she wanted any chance of being eligible for Auror training by the end of ehr seventh year, she needed to work her arse off.
But what Marlene didn’t get was why Bellatrix was even bothering to ask her. She didn’t think Bellatrix had some terribly high opinion of her. And then there was the nature of the request itself. Every other member of the Black family save maybe Andromeda seemed happy to not give a shit about Sirius. Why did Bella care what happened to him?
"Why?" she asked. "Why do you care and why are you asking me?" She looked up at Bella.
Bella shifted uncomfortably. She knew well that she shouldn't be having this conversation. She knew that if it ever got back to anyone of importance she would pay dearly. And the brevity of it all hit her suddenly. It was the explanation for why those on the other side didn't see the war as any great importance. They had no force that was pushing them to obey, to adhere and enforce. Not yet, anyway.
She turned to Marlene sharply, her jaw somewhat clenched. "Because family means something to me," she snapped. "Family is everything to the Blacks. He used to know that. I don't expect you to understand." He'd come around, he had to. He'd realize he was fighting on the wrong side, come running back and ready to take up the cause. He would.
Professional Cinderella
Marlene blinked. She stared at Bellatrix for a couple seconds, waiting for the laugh or the ‘Hah! Got you’. But it never came; Bellatrix was being serious. Marlene never expected those words to come of of Bella’s mouth. Well, she'd actually had no idea what Bella was going to request from her, but it certainly wasn’t looking out for Sirius. Up until now, she was sure Bella despised her cousin. There was lots of things she used to assume about Bellatrix.
Marlene was used to looking after Sirius, in a way. Or at least cleaning up his messes and often taking the blame; or at least that's how others saw it. When he did something stupid and reckless, it was somehow her fault. So she rolled with it. Besides, she would rather herself be threatened and hurt than him. It was why she'd never gotten back at Narcissa after learning that she was responsible for her second attack the previous year. She was even happy that Narcissa had taken her revenge out in her instead of Sirius.
But she sensed that what Bella was talking about was a little different. There was a war going on outside the castle walls and Sirius was very adamant in his views, much like herself. Views like that could get him seriously hurt or killed. Bella, she knew, had very different views. There were lots of questions she wanted to ask, but instead she nodded. "I'll keep him safe" she promised, and she meant it. Sirius was one of a handful of people she would willingly lay her life down to protect. She looked down, staring at the cigarette in her hands. A moment passed and she looked back up at Bella, swallowing. "Do you think he'll become a target?" She asked.
Bella felt no relief when Marlene's solemn promise fell. She was just a girl herself, weak and dumb. She was bold, and possessed a courage worthy of envy, but she was nothing compared to the forces she'd surely go against. Bella knew well how fickle Marlene could be; knew many of her weaknesses as well as she knew her own, and knew that that would play into her favor someday. When it came dow to it, she'd be no match for the death eaters. They'd wipe her out as if she'd never been there in the first place, wiping the blood from their hands with a satisfied smirk. If a little pure blood must be spilled to purify the future generations it would be worth it -- even if that included Marlene.
She had long harbored a secret hope that Sirius had the entire world right in his breast pocket, twisted into what he wanted. That he was merely playing a spy on the frontlines, that he was more devout to the cause than anyone else. It was stupid, of course, but she couldn't let the idea that her cousin had betrayed her so easily filter into her mind. He was her augmented little pawn that she moved around to fit into her theories and somehow he fit well there.
Her eyes brimmed with tears as she listened, thought, waited. She wiped her eyes roughly, looking out towards the lake with a plainly false mask of indifference. The words tasted like iron as they danced on her tongue, knowing that they shouldn't be released and yet bursting through the floodgates anyway. "He already is."

I know that the RP has pretty well died (though, hopefully just for the summer) but just in case anyone was checking in, I wanted to be sure that everyone knew I hadn't abandoned ship. I'm out of state at the moment and will be for the next several day. Love and miss you all terribly. Xoxo, Caro.
Dog Days Are Over || The Other Blackinnon
Marlene’s face sobered up. “We all have to die someday" she replied. She opened her mouth to disagree with Bella on the nature of Hogwarts, but then stopped. The reason she had a much more favourable opinion of the place was because for a few years it had been so much better than going to her own home. Winter Break was usually the only holiday she was happy to come home because over Christmas it wasn’t so bad. “Hogwarts has it’s downs, but I guess I don’t see it as bad because Hogwarts has been the only home I’ve known where it didn’t feel like I was intruding." she said after a moment, sticking the cigarette back in her mouth.. She wasn’t quite sure why she’d opened up to Bella like that. She’d long since accepted that there were more similarities than differences between the two of them but she didn’t think ‘friends’ was quite the right word to describe their relationship.
Bella’s initial question took her by surprise, her eyebrows lifting slightly as the the words came out of the other girl’s mouth. She took the cigarette out from between her teeth and turned her head to look at Bella. What could Bella possibly want to ask her that needed to remain solely between them? She wanted to ask what was the nature of the question, but considering school was practically over and she didn’t think she’d be seeing Bellatrix for awhile, she nodded slowly. One last favour couldn’t hurt. “Go ahead, ask. It’ll stay between us."
Her heart was tired. That was simply the best description at this point. She was exhausted. The last year had completely and utterly managed to drain nearly all of her emotion and had left her tired. In the last weeks of school, she'd sealed the last few deals and bargains she had, crossed her t's and dotted her i's. She had tied all of her loose ends. Except for one.
"Marlene.." she sighed, taking another long swig before answering. She didn't know how to ask Marlene the simple question that had been weighing heavy on her heart for the past few hours. She didn't know what response to expect from the brown eyed girl. She looked up, knowing that her eyes showed her uneasiness plainly. Sirius would come around. He had to. He just didn't understand yet. She had to make sure than he didn't do anything stupid in the mean time.
"I need you to look after Sirius. Please, Marlene. You.. you have to keep my cousin safe."

(Okay so I’m redoing headcanon #7.)
It wasn’t until the second war that Ella became paralyzed. It was June 15th, 1996 when Ella was sent out to talk to a woman about some knowledge that she might have possessed. The Order had believed that the woman had just stumbled upon it, and that she posed no real threat. Ella had offered to go since she wasn’t all that busy. When Ella arrived the woman let her in, and then sent word to some of the Death Eaters that an Order Member was there.
It wasn’t long before one, two, then three Death Eater members showed up to the house. Ella had been able to shoot out two quick stunning spells before taking off out the back door. The third Death Eater followed her and shot a spell of her own. Ella turned around just as the spell hit her. Without a fail Ella fell to the ground, and she figured it was a stunning spell, until she realized that she could move her torso, but not her legs. A horrified look came across her face as the realization hit her. Looking at the Death Eater before her, Ella eyes met with the ones behind the mask. She didn’t need to look at her hair, or anything else, the cold dark eyes glaring down at her where enough to see that it was Bellatrix. Ella hadn’t seen the woman in years, and she had heard about what she was capable of. She waited for the killing curse that never came. Instead Bellatrix looked at her and said harshly, “Get out of here", and with that she turned back to the house and rounded up the other two before leaving.
Ella sent a patronus to her brother calling for help, and without a fail, he was there to bring her back home.
