“You’re right, sweet thing. I could have, but then I wouldn’t be me. Would I?”
The academy was never quiet, not even in the night. There were always students studying, huddled up in groups beneath trees or practicing on each other on the training grounds. Goofing off on warm summer nights around the fountain, and taking dunks in the ponds on campus. But lately, she could hear the grass ruffle in the breeze. The snapping of twigs as rabbits searched for food.
It was a graveyard.
They all knew what was coming, with witches and hunters consorting and alliances shifting. Vale never knew she’d long for the chatter of students, to have to push past groups of them wherever she went. It is in that quiet that she hears it, her uncle whispering to Phoebe’s mother. An alliance in the making.
It takes half a day’s journey to get out to the country, where they’ve stashed him. She wonders if he goes mad there, all by himself. Thought dead to everyone who loved him, including his lovesick wife. Her motorbike skids to a stop just up the hill from his homestead, knowing she’ll have to walk the rest of the way. It doesn’t take her very long before she’s pushing the door open without preamble. “Abraham!”

“Well gee thanks. That really boosts my confidence.”
“Dan.. in all the years you’ve known me, have you ever known me to tell a lie?”
“That’s… not intimidating at all. I’m a terrible hunter.”
"Yeah..."
“Maybe the fact that my name is not Noah helps? —- Or maybe it’s my massive brain?”
"That certainly helps, but I think it's your massive heart that does the trick."
” Whaaat? I’ve been in the field before! Just… like okay maybe I didn’t battle, but I observed.”
"Sweet little Danny, how could I ever stay mad at you?"
“I'm sorry, is that supposed to be an insult? I prefer the comfort of my books, thank you.”
"No, bebe, it's not an insult. It's a correction. Unless you have field experience, I don't want to hear your opinion."
“Fair point, but you are alive right? Nearly came out… unscathed? Kind of?”
"Says the baby Hopkins who has never been in the field."
”Yo Vale, I think you should go easy on Noah. He’s just really dumb sometimes.”
"Yo Daniel, I think you should mind your own business. He just almost got me killed."
