@ nonbinary allosexual/romantic people– when you date someone, are you okay with them identifying as bi? or is it more gender affirming if they use omni or queer as a label? i know bi means two or more genders, but is does the prefix ever cause dysphoria because you’re not binary and it feels like it doesn’t apply to you or is it cool to be with a bi person when you’re nonbinary as long as they recognize your gender?

Why are so many pansexuals so biphobic?

But wait, I hear you say, #not all pansexuals, to which I say, read the opening  line again, it says so many, not all.

But back to the question at hand- why are so many pansexuals biphobic?

Time and again pansexuals are out here insisting whatever definition of bisexual they want is the correct definition, and they inevitably have the same gist “Those bisexuals care about the body, those bisexuals are limited and exclude people, those bisexuals choose gender before personality” The phrasing varies from ‘Bisexuals are into everyone, but have a preference’ to ‘Bisexuals cannot be into everyone by definition, they have to not like some gender/s’ to ‘Bisexuals can’t like nonbinary people’ to ‘Bisexuals get 2, that’s it’ all, of course, in contrast to some definition of pansexual that goes ‘Pansexuals love regardless of gender’ or ‘Pansexuals are attracted to all genders’.  Annd we’ll tastefully ignore the people who say pansexual was invented because bi people are trasnphobic until they can answer me what the words meant to replace gay, lesbian, and straight are as well, since cis people are transphobic no matter what sexuality they are.

And every single pansexual who says any of that shit is a biphobe, full stop. And someone who clearly has never read a single thing bi people have written in the past 50+ years (or as long as we’ve been writing as a separate group). Bisexuals definitions of themselves have been as varied as the amount of bisexuals there are, which itself was put forth as a definition for bisexual. Bisexuals are a huge group and there are some who might say they like just 2, or have a preference in gender, but there are plenty who are into everyone/all genders and don’t have a preference. The history of bisexual is an identity that is very flexible, with no hard edges, it’s got room for a lot, by nature.

Now the question we started with. WHY are so many pansexuals biphobes who insist on making up a definition for bisexual and using it despite the fact that it isn’t what bi people use, we don’t want them to, and it’s inevitably a definition that makes bi people into “gender, genitals, or not everyone”.

The answer I present is simply this: Many pansexuals cannot handle the fact that there is no actual discrete difference between bisexual and pansexual. Since some bisexuals are, and always have been attracted to all genders, without a preference, pansexuals have no stick to measure themselves against. Or, more directly, if  bisexual can mean the exact same thing as pansexual (and often does) then they see it as you insisting they are bisexual instead of you insisting that they are using an incorrect definition of bisexual and erasing real existing bisexual people with their biphobic nonsense.

In essence because they have such fragile confidence and such a shallow sense of self that seeing bi people use a definition we have FOR DECADES makes them feel #not-valid and it’s #panphobic if you don’t let them create their own meaning of bi to replace the previous meaning/s that we are already using in the name of “being inclusive” (by making bi less inclusive to justify their own feelings on the matter).

So is every pansexual biphobic? No.

If there a serious biphobia problem in pansexual groups because a lot of them keep making up dumbass definitions of bi to make sure it cannot every possibly be the same as pan? Yes.

Should it be easy af to explain that bi people have been saying shit like “Bi is attraction regardless of gender” for decades? Yes.

Is it? No. People are often intentionally obtuse and ignore what bi people say entirely if they find it inconvenient. 

TLDR: Biphobic Pansexual people like to make up less inclusive definitions of bisexual because otherwise they might have the exact same definition of themselves some bi people do and they can’t stand that.

The establishment of these sectors was created to help people find themselves and actually have a way to explain who they were to society. Scientists have proven that in the human psyche the capacity at which most understand gender is through a spectrum. Just because gender is a spectrum does not mean there is only one type of people that fall in love with “all”. You see, the definition of “pan” in the Greek origin is all-inclusive, meaning the connotation of the most accepted definition of “pan” as in the implication of the union of all branches in a group therefore ALL parts of the spectrum in genders. Bisexual on the other hand, “bi-“; the definition meaning two is used for those who are attracted to the opposite sides of the gender spectrum on more of scientifically physical form of attraction through the stereotypical sexes male and female.
