Born and raised in New Orleans, her parents had been married right after high school and seemed to be the happiest two people could be. A few years, they had officially built their little family — a son and their daughter, Belkis. Everything seemed perfect. Her mother was a stay at home mom who put a lot of her focus on her children and their father, despite his long hours, tried his best to put it simply.
At the young age of 16, Belly had to witness something that she’d never thought she’d ever have to see – her father cheating on her mother. It was during a night where she snuck out with one of her friends — there being a party that she absolutely couldn't miss—and during the drive to the house, Belly saw her father out with another woman from the office. A night he was supposed to be working late and she tried not to jump to conclusions, but any excuse for why this happened immediately fell out the window when she saw them kiss. That night she sat on it — knowing how distraught her mother would be over it — but by the end of the night, Belly couldn't hold it in anymore.
She didn't care about the kind of trouble she'd get into for sneaking out, but the reaction she'd gotten was far from what Belly had been expecting. Thanks for telling me but let's keep this between us for now, were the words that came out of her mother's mouth and that's when it hit her: her mother already knew. It seemed like the talk they had never happened because by the next morning, and every one afterward, everything went on as normal. The two playing the perfect family again.
Not for Belkis, though. Even though she did what her mother asked by not saying anything to anyone, a sort of resentment managed to grow for her father. A nasty attitude present whenever he was in the room, or seen with his co-worker without any sort of explanation. But a resentment also seemed to grow towards her mother, too. For staying when her husband wasn't faithful.
There were countless of times where she tried to talk some sense into her mother. Explain to her that she deserved better. That they would be okay and her mother didn't need to deal with keeping this all to herself, but she refused. This was her family. The only family she knew and, quite frankly, she didn't know what to do. Everything in their lives completely dependent on their father.
From a very young age, before everything, Belkis always knew she wanted to venture out of their city. As much as she loved New Orleans, she didn't wanted to be tied down to this one place for the rest of her life. Even more so now after the revelation that their "perfect" family wasn't so perfect.
By the time high school ended, Belkis applied to as many colleges that she could out of state with the mere need for wanting to get out of Louisiana. Eventually she got into a college in UCLA — majoring in business and ready to begin her new life. Communication with her parents became pretty non-existent despite trying to keep conversations up with her brother.
Junior year in college and the Kaplan family completely did a 180. Her parents getting a divorce after the truth about the father's affair became the talk of the town and her mother, with the suggestion of Belly, decided to pack up and move to California — choosing the small town of Aurora Bay to make home as opposed to the big city.
As for her, it seemed as if life was going great for her. She'd gotten a job that she enjoyed in Los Angeles, a nice apartment and was engaged to someone she'd met in college. But, of course, nothing seemed to stay that way. Time went on and eventually, Belkis began to feel an emptiness. Her entire life had been built on not wanting to be like her mother by the end and because of it, Belly strived to ensure that she was the exact opposite. She didn't want to depend on anyone for anything and it was the reason she seemed to work so hard in her field and her fiancé .. well, she loved him. Definitely did, but realizations hit her, Belly felt as though she didn't love him the way someone should love a future husband. Their spark was gone and Belly didn't think she was in love with him anymore.
Truthfully, She wasn't in love with anything in her life. That's reason she ended up in Aurora Bay. Quitting her job, ending her engagement all under the guise of wanting to be with her family.
TIDBITS
has visited AB every so often, but only to see her mother and didn't really socialize with anyone in the town much. Though, she did make some friends.
Her mother did get re-married two years ago and ever since, there's been a big effort to try to bring the two families together — which seems a lot easier said than done.
