so in a stroke of random inspiration I’ve fully outlined the entire pacific rim au I’ve been cooking up. that might end up being the next WIP on account of “holy shit I’m really excited for this” but we’ll see what the poll decides. It’s tied for second rn (as of when this was posted) anyway, so who knows, it could come out on top 🤔
I love bloodymary as a ship because the origins of the concept is really sweet.
Like it's really a ship that started in an attempt to give these characters (mostly Simon but in some minor facets Ryland as well) a happy ending. To give them a new connection that will make them happier. Like there was legitimately no other reason to put these two together beyond that + "bc it sparks joy" + the fact that the respective movies were released close together. I'm well aware of crack shipping and how wacky it is, but it's still a wild connection to me, sure it makes sense in hindsight but at the beginning?
People looked at Simon in Iron Lung and his very human plea of wanting to live, and was like 'y'know who understands the horror of being the sacrificial lamb and also happens to have a high-tech spaceship? Ryland Grace. He and his best friend are on their way to save you now. You're gonna have a life, and people that love you like you deserve.'
And people looked at Ryland, who has a loving family (Rocky and Adrian), and a happy ending by all definitions of the word and thought, just in case you ever feel this primal dread knowing you'll never see another human as long as you live, just in case it keeps you up at night that the very last time human hands touched your skin it was so terribly violent, here is a potential human connection for you. One that doesn't replace Rocky or Adrian by any means, but adds something newly valuable to your life. Gentle hands for both of them, when they had so little of that previously.
And I adore the fact that bloodymary doesn't have to be romantic. Like I love the romantic stories, don't get me wrong, but I love the queerplatonic ones too. It's called a ship but it's not 100% about finding either of them a romantic love interest, not really.
And it actually baffles me how well these two universes fit together, like puzzle pieces.
They each have their trolley operators, Eva and Ava, who want to treat Ryland and Simon with humanity, but knows they cannot because of the number of lives that rest solely on their shoulders.
The will to follow through on the task that would save humanity despite being hurt so badly by other people (Ryland Grace continuing his mission until the end even after remembering, Simon retrieving the black box knowing he won't make it out alive).
They each have the religious - specifically Christianity related - symbolism present in their stories. Hail Mary, full of Grace (which is a concept that still makes me giggle btw). The reference to the garden of Eden, with the spaceship name, the cults (unfortunate) beliefs in sacrifice and sin, and the last tree. The incident being called a rapture. While still not being a religious movie, and still being rooted in and true to their respective genres (sci fi vs horror).
The stars dying out vs the stars and planets disappearing. There is so much you could play with in that concept. There's of course the parallel universe thing, the "Simon comes from a future where they failed" thing, and even 'Simon and the other ships did end up in a pocket universe with nothing' thing, like Simon had wondered about. Explanations about what the Light Simon saw might be and how it could be connected to astrophage. So much possibility.
Simon died in a universe that got an unmerciful and indifferent entity pulling the strings, and people outside the story gave a shit enough to create the potential for a gentler ending. One that opens up a world of possibilities for both characters. (Also to be clear I'm not dissing the canon ending to either movie by any means. I adore how Iron Lung and PHM was written - and fanworks don't overwrite that at all).
It almost reminds me of that one quote from Brennan Lee Mulligan, y'know the one. It's somewhat stupid to apply it to a fictional ship but it comes to mind nonetheless.
"In the same way your heart feels and your mind thinks, you, mortal beings, are the instrument by which the universe cares. If you choose to care, then the universe cares. If you don't, then it doesn't."
It's just. Sweet. And kind. Such a fundamentally kind ship.

PHM meets Iron Lung meets Pacific Rim. I’ve posted some stuff on this already but this would be another longfic (much longer than my existing ones) and would be completely self indulgent. It will also be rated teen and up and not feature any explicit sex scenes (in the main work anyway, I might stick a bonus one in a different work in the same series) only because I want the focus to be on the story and not on eventual smut. Will probably cross 30k words, maybe 50k if I’m feeling ambitious, and will definitely take the rest of the year to create.

Aka the very evil “Grace and Simon are both from the Iron Lung universe” longfic that’s been bouncing around in my head for months. It’s chock full of a lot of my own original worldbuilding ideas for that side of the fandom and definitely deviates from canon everything. Will probably be 50k+ words and take ages for me to complete but ce la vie. Barely outlined and still more of a concept than a real fleshed out idea, but if I sit down and dedicate myself to it, I know it’ll come pouring out of me. Will be rated E for explicit content AND will have a hurt/no comfort unhappy ending.

I’ll just give you guys the blurb for this one bc I’ve had it written for a month. No idea on the length or scope of this one but now that the idea is in my brain, it’s not gonna leave, so here we are.
Simon Byung is a 23y/o mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering student at St. Mary’s, a small liberal arts college in the middle of nowhere, California. Simon only has to pass one more class to graduate—Ethical Ecology, a well-loved staple elective in the department. The first problem? It’s taught by Dr. Ryland Grace, a 46y/o molecular biology professor known as one of the toughest professors in the department. The second problem? Simon’s earned a reputation as a bit of a problem student. The third problem? He’s been in love with Dr. Grace for the last three years.

Pirate AU
Yet another longfic idea that's been cooking in my head for a second--this one is outlined, but not to the same extent as the rest of em. I'm partial to this one only because anyone who knows me knows I lvoe pirates (peep the username, first of all). Privateer Grace, Pirate and Castaway Human!Rocky, Siren Simon, and a LOT of plot. Here's the blurb for this one:
Ryland Grace has always been a little bit afraid of the sea. It’s one of the few things about himself that he knows for sure; he’s from Port Sol, he’s the navigator for a research vessel called the Hail Mary, and he woke up about a week ago on an empty ship beached on a reef. He doesn’t know where he is, where he was going, or what happened to his crew. Thankfully, he isn’t left to figure it out on his own for long.
Binary Stars
Grace bypasses AT-5 in the Hail Mary while on the way to Erid and picks up a stray radio signal from the blood ocean. Turns out, it’s easier to fall in love with Simon than it is to save him, and sometimes connections are more meaningful when you know they come with an expiration date. Or, the story in which they fall in love over the radio, and nobody gets the happy ending they want.
Based heavily off of this text post of mine, which simply will not leave my head. Probably won’t be much longer than 5 chapters (I say, optimistically).

Ignore the fact that I forgot to check my asks for a week again thank you so much!! I’m so glad you enjoyed, I had a lot of fun writing that one and will definitely be posting more brat Simon in the (near) future!! its a dynamic I like for the two of them because I think it’s something they can play around with, specifically the different types of vulnerability. for Simon, it’s a chance to talk back and be “punished” for it without any real consequences, which could be a good way to unlearn all of that Eden programming brainwashed into him, and for Grace it gives him the ability to be in control of something, which could be a good way to get comfortable with that again after so long of being the one controlled and manipulated
anyway I just think the dynamic is neat :3 but if you (or any of my other followers) like that dynamic, keep an eye on my AO3, I might have more cooking up in the (very near) future!

"it's stupid to take two movies that arent about romance and making it about shipping" i think its actually beautiful that people are engaging in the themes of the text and examining the characters' stories and drawing parallels. i think its great that people care about fresh new scifi and want to explore the possibilities of space and the nature of sacrifice and finding a kindred being in the vast, strange universe. and then making them gay kiss because its fun. hell yea.

a series of heartfelt videos from grace to stratt, in which he says hello and goodbye and i hate you and thank you and i miss you, are found in the database and reposted online. there's suddenly a massive outcry of support for her, which results in her release from prison. some youtuber makes a gritty but surprisingly touching short film about her story
people coming together to make earth better. trying to repair the damages from the sun's dimming, trying to repair the environment, trying to repair global relations. they want to be an earth worth saving, an earth that grace would be proud of
space travel becomes a huge global priority, the nations of the world pool resources and there are huge advances in technology (especially with scientists studying xenonite!)
the project hail mary launch date becomes a huge global holiday. there's a parade in almost every city all over the world in honor of the hail mary. people lay candles and flowers at memorials for yao, ilyukhina, annie, and dubois. murals of grace and rocky cover building sides. people gather in the streets and remember those who saved them, and banners that read "grace rocky save stars" flutter in the wind above the crowds.
coca cola airs a VERY insensitive commercial with some low quality eridian puppets. the commercial is slammed online and company stocks plummet
people continue to live their lives as normal. because of grace and rocky, because of the beetles, the sun is saved. earth keeps spinning.

one of the most amusing things about living in hick country USA is how people tend to find random forgotten fireworks stashed in weird places in the days after the 4th of July and then the obvious solution to getting rid of them (bc if we store them somewhere do next year they Will be lost and forgotten) is to just set them off. there’s just always a background noise and a casual expectation of random fireworks for the remainder of the month. it’s very funny, go us (says the guy who was woken up by fireworks for the second time this week)
