“ i think you do ｡ ”   the young earthbender’s brow furrows ｡   her gaze fixates on a strand of hair that falls over her forehead ｡   and then her eyes unfocus outward and refocus on zuko again ｡   “ otherwise your head might explode ｡   mom said ｡ ”

❝     𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕'𝒔  𝒏𝒐𝒕  𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏  𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆   ━━   ❞     zuko  practically  had  to  bite  his  own  tongue  to  prevent  himself  from  continuing  his  rant.   lin  was  a  child  ,   remember  that.   they  were  all  aggressive  and  blunt.   except  she  was  different.   lin  was  a  beifong.   she  was  almost  exactly  identical  to  her  mother.

                    the  horror.

❝  yeah  ｡  ❞      the  fact  that  she  can  hear  in  his  voice  that  he’s  never  smiling  gives  it  away  ｡  or  maybe  it’s  the  way  she’s  never  heard  him  laugh  before  ;  maybe  he  thinks  nothing  is  funny  ｡  zuko  just  exudes  a  sense  of never-happy-ness ｡      ❝  i  can  tell  ｡  ❞

𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆  𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕  𝒈𝒂𝒗𝒆  𝒖𝒑  𝒐𝒏  𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈  𝒛𝒖𝒌𝒐  𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕  𝒂  𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒆.   there  was  no  point  in  trying.   a  waste  of  energy  ,   and  more  importantly  ,   a  waste  of  time.   yet  ,   he  still  felt  the  need  he  should  remind  people  every  now  and  then.   it  was  a  warning  whenever  they  made  jokes  about  his  dark  exterior  ,   and  how  he  should  lighten  up.

                    it  wasn’t  going  to  happen. 

                    yet  ,   after  hearing  toph’s  equally  dry  response  ,   he  cannot  help  but  feel   ...   offended.   how  dare  she!      ❝     what   ...   what’s  that  supposed  to  mean?!   ❞

𝐬𝐞𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡  ❜

                                               ❝  &  you  were  never  this  much  of  a  crap  shot & yet —  here  we  are  !  ❞ the  difficulty  that  came  with  hitting  a  moving  target  played  to  her  advantage  .  every  time  his  weight  came  in  contact  with  the  ground ,  his  location  was  given  ;  the  sky  rained  earth  with  the  means  to  incapacitate  .  every  time  the  air  around  her  grew  hot  ,  evasion  tactics  were  used  & distance  was  made  . close  quarters  with  the  prince  was  a  big  no  no  .  distance  was  key  in  this  endurance  game  . hands  flattened  upon  that  narrow  waist  of  hers  with  her  body  pointed  in  his  general  directions  with  brows  arched  downward  as  if  frustrated  .  ❝ c'mon  zuko  !  what  are  you , out  of  practice ? cozy  life  in  your  palace  has  rendered  you  rusty  if  not  sloppy  !  ❞

𝒉𝒆  𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒐𝒕  𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕  𝒉𝒐𝒘  𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅  𝒔𝒉𝒆  𝒘𝒂𝒔.   maybe  he  would  have  told  her  that    ——   except  that  toph  was  toph.   and  she  was  so  damn  cocky.   she  did  not  need  a  reminder  of  something  she  already  knew.   growling  in  contempt  ,   he  delicately  landed  on  the  floor  beneath  him.   he  was  making  rookie  mistake  after  rookie  mistake.   

                    not  only  was  he  depending  on  his  footing  too  much  ,   but  he  was  practically  stomping  with  each  move!   no  wonder  toph  moved  before  he  could  even  come  up  with  another  plan.   zuko  was  better  than  that.   so  what  was  wrong?   maybe  she  was  right.   maybe  now  that  he  was  firelord  ,   he  was  a  bit  too  coddled. 

                    smirking  ,   he  brushed  off  the  debris  coating  his  triceps  ,   flexing  his  shoulder  blades.   she  could  see  using  the  ground  ,   so  why  not  lighten  it  up  a  bit  on  the  toes?   he  could  propel  himself  in  the  air  ,   after  all.   not  for  long  ,   but  long  enough  to  get  a  hit  in  ,  and  knock  toph  off  her  footing.   

                    ❝     so  be  it  ,   ❞     he  ran  at  her  ,   full  force  to  close  as  much  distance  as  he  could.   time  it  right  ,   zuko.   he  wanted  to  be  closer  ,   but  not  right  in  her  face.   his  flames  could  only  stretch  out  so  far.   right  before  she  could  even  shift  her  stance  ,   he  leapt  into  the  air  ,   flames  flickering  beneath  his  knuckles  to  shoot  him  a  few  feet  further.   this  was  a  training  exercise  ,   so  he  still  intended  to  be  as  cautious  as  possible.   he  was  now  on  her  opposite  side.   even  when  her  back  was  facing  him  ,   she  was  still  dangerous.   he  spun  as  swiftly  as  he  could  ,   leg  tiger - tailing  around  as  he  landed  to  knock  the  earthbender  to  her  back.

❝                    of  course     :          it  is  not  luck  which  garners  excellence  but  persistence       .             i  am  sorry  if  i  gave  offence       .                    ❞

❝     𝒊𝒕'𝒔  𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆   ,   ❞     the  words  are  released  in  a  growl - like  manner.   just the  word  luck  itself  irritated  zuko  to  no  end.   due  to  𝚙𝚊𝚜𝚝  𝚎𝚡𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎𝚜  ,   he  had  every  right  to  believe  that  luck  was  a  mere  illusion.   a  way  people  measured  how  great  their  life  was  in  comparison  to  those  who  suffered  each  and  every  day.

                    people  like  zuko  had  to  do  twice  the  work  to  even  get  half  the  respect  those  who  believed  in  luck  did.   it  was  fake  ,   and  he  preferred  to  pretend  the  word  just  did  not  exist   ,     ❝     you  were  able  to  dodge  that  move  because  of  your  skill.   don’t  sell  yourself  short.   ❞
