Okay, so in the original Odyssey, we all know Odysseus’s fatal flaw is his pride, right? He denounces the gods and says ‘fuck y’all, I’m fine without you because I’m so awesome,” basically.
I was thinking of what Odysseus in Epic the musicals fatal flaw would be. And I realized it really could just be pride still.
In Remember them, Ody goes on this long speech listing his name, address, and social security number to the cyclops. And everyone says, why the hell did he do that?
Ody explains it as, remember me whenever you don’t want to show mercy. One could say he prides himself on his mercy, especially compared to the gods.
Stick with me now,
Odysseus’s life goes downhill from there, and every time he shows mercy, what he prided himself on, something bad happened. I guess this points more to his fatal flaw being mercy, but if it was, would he really need to boast to the cyclops? If he was as merciful as he believed would he really need to make sure everyone knew he was? His pride clouded his judgment, causing him to boast to the cyclops and reveal information about himself that would prove detrimental.
It wasn’t his mercy that caused Poseidon to go after him, it was his pride.
I don’t really have a closure for this but yeah, food for thought !!
