I think one of the reasons i love the type of horror that's expectant is because of that one story from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark about the cabin in the woods, and the "paintings" of angry faces on the walls.

There's just something so terrifying about truly believing you're safe, and that everything is normal and logical, only to very suddenly find out that not only are you no longer safe, but you've never been safe.

And the longer you dwell on that, the scarier it gets. That's why the uncanny valley really does it for me — something that could be normal, might be normal, existing in the same space as you, and yet you can't shake the feeling that it's wrong, somehow. That something might be wrong.

That your preconceived notion of safety might actually be false.

And then it's morning in the cabin, and you get a better look at those creepy paintings that were freaking you out all night — just to see nothing staring back at you but windows.
