It's kind of strange to me how Koujaku has always been labeled as the “too vanilla” love interest when:

He was literally raised alongside Yakuza, his father constantly pressured him to be the heir of said Yakuza so much to the point where he hired someone to force tattoos onto him (when he was like eight years old btw), not only was traumatized by the forced tattooing, but then the ink of said tattoos seeped into his nerves which caused his mind to be overtaken and in an unconsciously manipulated state of mind he murded his family, everyone on his main homeland, and his mother, and he had to hold onto all of that guilt and self-hatred for over 20 years, tried to even kill himself, but only stopped because the only thing keeping him alive was Aoba.

Yes, he's the “childhood friends to lovers” archetype, and yes that already adds a bit of familiarity and comfort to their relationship, causing them to be more openly vulnerable and affectionate towards each other, which, yes, in some people's eyes may seem “vanilla” but given everything both Koujaku and Aoba have been through, what's wrong with that?? Say what you want about KouAo, but they nailed the childhood friends to lovers trope before the childhood friends to lovers trope was as universally loved as it is now.

Given the fact that Koujaku has loved Aoba before the events of Dramatical Murder even take place, he's been through too much for him to be labeled as “the boring one” simply because he finally got the love of his life whom he's cherished since they were kids after 20+ years of struggling with guilt, depression, and suicidal thoughts all by his lonesome.
