ONE OF THE BEST SETS OF THE YEAR, THuS SO FAR....
Just ironing clothes half asleep. Welcome told me today that maybe a cyclops was playing the banjo music we were listening to on the way to preschool. Then he said, “there’s a basketball net high up in the trees and a robot is climbing the tree.” Felt a lot of love for my creative writing students today as we come upon the end of the semester and they articulate in writing their processes, their changes. One discovers her subject matter is relationships gone to hell, one discovers she writes for people who barely survived childhood, one discovers the enormous vulnerability she feels every time she works through her creative nonfiction. While in another way, it was seemingly a terrible semester of destruction for so many of my students. A mother died of lung cancer, a friend tried to commit suicide, PTSD in every direction, a grandfather went into assisted living, chronic pain was finally diagnosed, a brain tumor was “shaved,” many cars broke down, an undesired pregnancy, no daycare options and an autistic son spends two hours a week alone with a schizophrenic grandfather, a miscarriage. World, I am honored to have my job. As I was rounding over the mountain on my way home, I felt the freedom of the coming winter break crashing at my semester mind. I move through the days sometimes with a desire to rip my shirt off and scream THANK YOU to, I don’t know, thermodynamics? My spirit animals? My past lives? Feeling grateful like a cyclops with a fucking banjo. Ironing my shirt for tomorrow, I remembered how the best band in the world lived around here for awhile and you could go see them.
