┆ The smell of cigarettes lingered longer than his cologne ever did. Empty bottles piled beneath his kitchen sink, ash collected on his apartment balcony, and hangovers had long since become part of Choi Beomgyu's morning routine. Somewhere between "just one drink" and "just one more," he stopped noticing where the nights took him.
Until one of them brought him back to you.

⧽⧽ It was long past your bed time, but who cared? You lived alone. Curled up in the corner of the couch, you had one leg tucked beneath you while the other hung lazily over the edge of the cushions. An oversized T-shirt—one you'd never gotten around to returning—slipped loosely over a pair of shorts, almost completely hidden beneath the blanket draped across your lap. Every now and then, you pulled it a little higher against the cool night air before absentmindedly continuing to scroll through the endless stream of Instagram reels, occasionally liking videos you thought were cute. The television murmured quietly in the background, filling your apartment with just enough noise to keep the silence from feeling too empty.
Knock knock...
Your heart dropped. Who the hell could've been knocking on your apartment at 2 in the morning? Your parents lived 40 minutes away, and you knew they wouldn't drive all the way down here at this time in the morning. You had friends, but they definitely wouldn't show up unannounced unless it was something really urgent. As your gaze remained fixed on the heavy wooden door, you were only left with one more possibility in your head.
"Y/N... Let me in, please..."
His words were slurred, and his voice was desperate. He knew better than to show up at your apartment on a Saturday night at 2AM, but he could care less. When you didn't respond, he knocked again—this time, even more desperate than before.
The second knock was enough to snap you out of your thoughts. Without getting off the couch, you replied in a annoyed tone.
"Go home."
You weren't really annoyed—he knew that. It was all an act just for him to get lost. It took a while for him to respond, but he did.
"Please."
Hearing his pleads didn't make you feel any better of a person. If anything, they only made you feel worse. Listening to his voice was painful. It only served as a reminder of your breakup—something you definitely wished never happened and tried so hard to forget.
"... Gyu."
His nickname was the only thing you managed to choke up.
"I just didn't know where else to go..."
His voice came softer this time, almost swallowed by the thick apartment door separating you. Silence settled between the two of you as you squeezed your eyes shut, gripping the blanket tighter around yourself.
"Go away."
"Please just go away..."
You pleaded for him to just leave you alone. The last thing you wanted after a long week was to deal with past unresolved problems with your ex. But here you were. Seconds went by and you didn't hear a peep from Beomgyu. No more pleading. No more knocking. The sudden silence unsettled you far more than his begging ever had. You frowned. "Gyu?"
Still nothing. Then, from the other side of the door—a dull thump. He slowly slid down the wood before coming to rest on the floor. Your feet carried you towards the door before your mind had a chance to stop them. As you looked through the peephole, you saw him sitting on the floor, head titled back against the door with heavy-lidded eyes. His legs were lazily stretched out in front of him. Opening the door seemed wrong, yet leaving him out there in the cold—drunk—seemed even more wrong.
Your hand hovered over the knob as you contemplated letting him in one last time. As soon as you turned the lock, you heard quiet shuffling from the other side, followed by the unsteady sound of him pushing himself back on his feet. The door creaked open just enough for him to come into view. He was already standing there, one hand braced against the wall to steady himself. A tiny, sheepish smile tugged at the corners of his lips when he saw you standing there in front of him. He didn't say anything. Instead, he simply stood there, staring at you as though he couldn't quite believe you had actually opened the door for him. His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to speak, but no words came out. Then, he embraced you in a tight hug. His grip seemed to tighten a fraction every second, as if afraid that you'd push him away again. He smelled the same—his signature cologne mixed with cheap alcohol and cigarettes.
"Beomgyu..."
You whispered. You tried your best to sound uninterested—yet you didn't resist his hug anyway. He let out a soft hum in acknowledgement, still hugging you like he was trying to convince himself this wasn't just another drunken dream.
For a while, neither of you moved. The only sounds filling the apartment were the quiet television in the background and Beomgyu's uneven breathing against your shoulder.
"... Can I breathe now?" you mumbled after what felt like forever.
His grip loosened almost immediately.
"Sorry."
The apology came out so soft, you barely even caught it. As you took a step back, your eyes wandered over him. His hoodie was wrinkled, his hair was a mess, and his cheeks were flushed from the alcohol. Even standing still, he swayed ever so slightly, having to force one hand against the wall to keep himself from falling over.
"How much did you even drink?"
The words left your mouth before your brain could process them. You didn't mean to show any sort of care or affection for him. It just happened so... naturally. Beomgyu shrugged.
"Not that much."
He answered—but you and him both knew he was lying.
"Just... come inside before my neighbours think I'm harbouring a drunk raccoon."
You closed the door after him, the click of the lock echoing throughout the apartment. Neither of you spoke. Beomgyu quietly slipped off his shoes before setting them neatly beside the door. That familiar gesture made your chest ache. His eyes wandered across the room, lingering on little things that hadn't changed—the blanket draped over the couch, the dying succulent on the windowsill, the framed photo you'd forgotten to take down. Then, his gaze returns to you.
"You're still wearing it."
Wearing it? Wearing what? You looked down. His old oversized T-shirt. Your cheeks reddened at the sight.
"Uhm- It's a good shirt! Alright? Don't think too much into it."
You rambled, the excuse sounding less convincing the longer you spoke. Beomgyu paused.
"It looks better on you than it ever did on me."
Not knowing what to reply, you simply busied yourself by getting a glass of water and placing it on the coffee table in front of the couch. "Just sit, drink your water, and go."
Surprisingly, Beomgyu obediently sat on the couch—the right side, to be specific. It was his unclaimed spot in your apartment. He drank the water you had brought him, holding the glass with two hands because of how drunk he was.
"Why are you here?"
You asked. Your tone wasn't accusing, but it didn't exactly sound like you were entirely open to the idea of him showing up drunk at your door either. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he took a few more sips of his water before placing the cup back down on the table.
"Just... wanted to see you."
You rolled your eyes. Of course. That's what they all say.
"Well, you've seen me. So you're going now, right?"
Beomgyu smirked. "Chasing me out? Already? I just got here."
You tapped your foot impatiently, refusing to let your guard down so easily. Your eyes lingered on him for only a second before you forced yourself to look away. Three months. Three whole months, yet somehow it still felt unfair that he could walk back into your apartment and make your heart forget every reason you'd left him.
"You promised you wouldn't drink anymore."
You murmured. He looked down at the glass on the table as his smirk faltered.
"... I know."
He didn't argue back—just simply acknowledged his wrongs. The silence that followed settled heavily between the two of you.
You'd spent three months imagining what you'd say if you ever saw him again. You'd rehearsed every angry speech in your head, convinced you'd finally have the courage to tell him exactly how much he'd hurt you.
Now, with him seated only a few feet away, you couldn't bring yourself to say any of it. Beomgyu kept his eyes on the now-empty glass in his hands, absentmindedly tracing circles around the rim with his thumb.
"... I tried."
Your brows knitted together.
"... Tried what?"
He let out a quiet breath before answering.
"To stop."
His voice was so small it almost disappeared into the room.
"For at least a month, I tried."
He paused before continuing.
"... But then work got bad again."
You didn't respond immediately. You sighed before speaking up again. "... You could've called me." Upon hearing that, Beomgyu let out a humourless laugh.
"Didn't deserve to."
You looked away.
"You don't get to decide that for me."
He didn't answer. For a moment, you thought he hadn't heard you. His gaze remained fixed on the coffee table, unfocused, as though he were trying to gather the energy to respond. After a long while, he simply gave the smallest nod.
"... I know."
That was all.
Silence settled over the apartment once more. His blinks became slower. Longer. Every now and then his head dipped forward before he caught himself at the last second. The glass in his hands lowered little by little until it rested loosely against his knee.
"Are you even listening?"
He hummed, but his eyes were already half closed. He blinked. Then blinked again. The glass nearly slipped from his fingers. You quietly took it from him and set it aside on the table.
"Seriously?" You stared at him in disbelief.
"You're unbelievable..." The words came out far softer than you'd intended. Beomgyu didn't react. His head had slumped against the back of the couch, lashes resting against his flushed cheeks. The rise and fall of his shoulders had steadied, his breathing noticeably deeper than before.
"... Gyu?"
Nothing. You let out a quiet sigh.
"You came all the way here just to fall asleep?"
Again, no response. Against your better judgement, your eyes lingered on him. His hair had become an absolute mess, soft strands falling over his eyes and obscuring his face. There was a faint crease between his brows, even in his sleep, as though he couldn't fully relax. "... Idiot."
You should've woken him up. You should've made him leave. Instead, you found yourself kneeling in front of him.
"... Just this once," you whispered, though you weren't sure whether you were talking to him or yourself. Careful not to wake him, you slowly reached up, gently brushing the loose strands of hair away from his face. His eyelashes fluttered. Before you could pull your hand away, warm fingers suddenly wrapped around your wrist. Your breath caught. Beomgyu's eyes slowly opened, hazy from both exhaustion and the alcohol. He stared at you for a long moment, almost as if he couldn't quite believe you were really there.
"... Hi," he murmured, the corners of his lips lifting into the smallest, sleepiest smile.
"... You're awake."
"Mhm." His grip on your wrist loosened, only for his hand to slowly slide until it found yours instead.
"... You were pretending to sleep?" you accused quietly. He lazily shook his head.
"... Just... comfortable." Before you could respond, he gave your hand the gentlest tug. Caught off guard, you stumbled forward, one hand instinctively bracing yourself against the couch beside him. Beomgyu didn't waste the opportunity. He leaned forward until his forehead rested against your shoulder before quietly wrapping both arms around your waist.
"... Five minutes," he mumbled against your shoulder, his voice already growing quieter.
"... Then I'll go." You knew he was lying. Somehow... you didn't have the heart to call him out on it. He let out a content sigh against your shoulder, his grip around your waist gradually loosening as sleep finally caught up with him. Within minutes, his breathing had evened out completely.
"... Beomgyu?"
Nothing. You couldn't help but let out the smallest laugh.
"You really fell asleep."
Careful not to wake him, you adjusted the blanket that had slipped onto the floor, draping it over his shoulders before awkwardly settling beside him. His arms instinctively tightened around you the moment you shifted, earning another quiet sigh from him.
"... You're unbelievable, y'know?"
There was no annoyance left in your voice anymore. You looked down at him for what felt like forever. Three months. Three months of convincing yourself you were over him, that you hated him for every broken promise, every sleepless night, every bottle he'd chosen over himself. Yet the boy asleep against your shoulder didn't look like someone you'd spent months trying to forget. He just looked... tired.
"... Idiot," you whispered, carefully brushing a few strands of hair away from his forehead one last time.
A sleepy smile appeared on his lips.
"... I Missed you."
The words were barely audible. You weren't even sure he'd meant to say them. Your chest tightened.
