This boy again. He kept bumping into him. “Drink coffee then. Don’t be a little bitch about it.”
“But it tastes awful so I’m hesitating.”
“But coffee is highly unhealthy. Wouldn’t you rather drink some juice.. or maybe tea?”
“But those don’t have caffeine. The tea I drink doesn’t anyway.”
Alice let herself be held, not knowing what to do. “Maybe… I rationally know that’s true, but my brain doesn’t want to accept it. Has that ever happened to you?” Alice looked up, confused. “What?”
“All the time.” Berlioz admitted at the question, though for much different circumstances. He constantly knew what he should do and should feel but he never actually listened to that. “I mean... maybe he thought it would be easier. If he spent less time with you before leaving maybe he thought it would hurt less when he left.”
“Do you want mine? I didn’t finish it and I don’t really want it to go to waste.”
“Hm... yeah, if you don’t mind. That’d be great.”
Alice chucked the phone into her bag, never wanting to see the damned thing again. “He didn’t tell me anything. He was distant and then” Alice made a poofing motion with her hand. “Gone.” She burst into another round of sobs, which then turned into hiccups. “He’s probably happy though.”
Berlioz hesitated when she started crying, but wrapped his arms around her tightly and pulled her closer. “He didn’t want to leave you.” He really didn’t understand why Toulouse didn’t tell her anything... maybe not seeing her right before leaving would make it easier, or something. He’d have to call him later and find out. “He was devastated.”
Alice angrily glared at her phone. She hoped he would have had some decency to tell Berlioz what had happened. Unlocking her phone to the picture of Toulouse in Paris taken earlier that day, Alice showed it to the other boy. “That’s what happened. Without warning.”
Berlioz frowned as she reached for her phone but didn’t say a word until he saw the picture. “Oh... he didn’t tell you he was leaving?” He asked, completely shocked at the fact. It was so unlike his brother. “He got accepted to an art school back home... so he left. I thought he told you.”
Alice looked up from her position on the floor when she heard cursing in French. She secretly hoped it was Toulouse and he would come and clear this mess right up. It was only Berlioz, but she did like the boy. He was sweet and they went through a similar period of pain together. “Hi.” She stated, her voice cracking through her controlled sobs.
Berlioz wasn’t taking his brother’s departure all that well either, but he’d at least gotten an explanation and knew the reasoning behind it all. He already missed having his brother in his room with him. Quickly when he realized how hard Alice was crying though he sat beside her, placing her phone in front of her. “Did something happen?”
“No one would dare to say a thing, would they? You know they wouldn’t,” they hummed, dragging long and delicate porcelain fingers through their thick mane, a raised brow when they noticed where the other was looking. “— Ha! The smartest thing you’ve ever said, as if – as if I would have a heart.”
“Depends on the person. There is security at this school, if someone was climbing through a second story window they’d figure it out.” Berlioz was quickly going to run out of confidence and excuses, and he knew it. He had to go somewhere else before that happened, he didn’t want to be a part of this game. “Exactly my point. Now, excuse me.” He shifted his backpack on his shoulder, moving to go around the other.
“I have my ways, and have you never heard of windows, little Berlioz?” they chuckled, rolling their eyes at the other’s stupidity. Pouting, the blonde sighed overdramaticlally. “And here I thought I was special. How you break my heart, Berlioz.”
“You would have been caught by somebody. Besides, my brother had it before he left, I probably just got it from him.” Berlioz crossed his arms, eyes flicking behind the blond to see how far the library was from where they were. That was probably the best place to go but really he’d go anywhere quiet at this point, whether it the library, his room, or a practice room. His fatigue was forgotten. “Oh as if.” He said flatly, rolling his eyes.
“How can you be certain? What if I snuck into your bedroom late at night?” they uttered, a smirk filled with mischief. “It surprises me that you’ve even noticed something like that.”
“You’d have needed a key for that, the doors automatically lock...” Berlioz protested, having become more argumentative since the first few times he spoke with Diaval. He was more willing to let logic overcome the taunts. “I notice who I talk to and who I don’t.”
“— How unfortunate. I was hoping you’d die from the flu, I guess my evil plan must have failed.”
“It’s not like you could have given it to me, I haven’t seen you in at least a couple weeks.”
“So I think I’ve finally gotten over being sick, but I’m still exhausted. I’d resort to drinking coffee at this point.”
“Do I look as bad as I feel?” She turned to the closest person, sniffling a bit.
“Well that depends on how you feel... but you don’t look bad, so there’s that.” Berlioz explained, reaching into his backpack and grabbing a little travel bag of tissues. “I was sick a couple days ago.” He told her, offering her the bag.
Well that was a wonderful night I won’t remember.
“From what the Gossip blog said, I’m glad I wasn’t there.”
“Okay, so. I am kind of conflicted, you know? The bloody gossip blog. Is my nickname a compliment, like damn, look at Fucky! Or a pun on my bloody name, very unoriginal if that’s the case – or like, bad? In a sense? Like God, no. Here comes Fucky! “ pausing, the male inhaled once before yelling loudly. “What does it mean?!”
Berlioz blinked at the questions, opening his mouth to try and answer several times before finally giving up and frowning at him until he had finally yelled. “Are you done?” He asked with a playfully raised eyebrow before starting to actually explain his answer. “I don’t usually pay attention to the gossip blog honestly. They say really stupid stuff sometimes, especially earlier in the year... but, as much as I hate to say it, it’s probably negative. Everything they say is.”
Alice stared at her phone, uncomprehending. Gone? That couldn’t happen. The situation was one of stupid romance movies and bad Sparks novels. The more she thought, the more her eyes began to water. After a brief attempt to control them, tears flowed down the blonde’s cheeks. He hadn’t even told her good bye… In a fit of rage she threw her phone, only to hit another student with it.
Berlioz let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through his hair. He’d be reassigned a roommate soon, with his brother having left and all that. He knew why he left, but he also figured that he had told Alice already, and everyone else that would care for that matter. Why he didn’t would be a mystery to him for, probably, quite a long time. He gasped as he was hit by a flying object though, quickly cursing in French and looking to figure out what had just happened. “Oh, Alice... hey.” He said softly, bending to grab her phone from the ground.
So I think my only option for prom left school without saying a word to me… why does this keep happening?
“He just picked up and left?”
