“Gotcha gotcha. That’s totally understandable though.”
“You’d think that using your hands wouldn’t be so exhausting, but man, I could go for a cup of coffee or four.” She laughed gently, rolling her eyes.
“So could I, coffee is my absolute weakness.”
“I'm usually a tea person, but sometimes I could go for an iced coffee.”

“I don’t think it’s your hands that’s making you exhausted. Could be, but I very much doubt it. You just want the coffee, don’t you?”
“You caught me, but I figured if I didn’t have an excuse for why I needed the coffee, they’d think I have a problem.”

“I usually try not to spend my free time with teachers but coffee sounds pretty amazing right now so i’m in.”
“Glad I could be excised for the moment being. Gotta get your head out of that social construct though. Teachers and students can definitely hangout.”

Bette nodded. “Gotcha gotcha.” She said, fixing her glasses and then continuing to speak. “Well, it fits you very well! American Sign Language is mainly just memory, and it doesn’t take too much of it. It comes naturally to me, everyone uses their hands on a daily basis, it’s like a personal handshake.” She laughed, noticing that didn’t make any sense.
clara nodded. “ what got you into it, if i may ask ?? ”
“I’ve always just had more of a connection with different languages. Whether it be asl, french, etc. It’s my scene.”

“I teach our second year American Sign Language.” Bette smiled back. “Clara is so pretty, no one is named Clara anymore. Such a bummer.”
“ sign language sounds so cool ! i’ve always wanted to take it, but when it comes to languages, i stick to spanish ever year. it’s close enough to portuguese that i’m able to pass with hardly any study. it’s like, my one lazy choice. most of my others classes are aps. ” she told her with a small laugh. “ aw, thank you ! i’m happy to help with the comeback of the name. it’s fairly common in brazil, though. well, common enough that i know two other claras, anyway. and a handful of maria claras as well. ”

“will do, ya know, for a student you seem quite mature.” she chuckled and sipped her drink.

“For the sake of refills, I think we’re all glad their virgin, as well.” She laughed and shook her head.
❝ so true ! also, i couldn’t imagine everyone getting drunk. it would become such a mess. ❞

“I’m hoping I can get my little brother to come live with me, that or maybe even some form of romance. Just something to get my out of my boring shell.” She laughed and raised her brow. “Korea, huh? Is that hard for you to have them so far away?”
“How old is he? I’m sure in 365 days you’ll be able to experience some sort of romance.” He said and chuckled “I’m sure this new year will have some cool tricks up its sleeves for our lives.” and then nodded at the question “It can be, but I know they live more peacefully over there and it’s not like I can’t visit.”
“He’s 23. And being at LAAPA, who knows what’ll brew up.” Bette laughed and continued to talk. “Sounds like it’d be a pretty vacation, do you go often?”

Bette took a sip of her drink, and then continued to talk, “Although, Punta Del Este sounds gorgeous, we’re glad you stayed to join us tonight at LAAPA.” She smiled sweetly and held out her hand. “Miss Cecilia.”
clara shook the teacher’s hand, smiling back at her. “ it’s nice to meet you, miss cecilia. i’m clara. what subject do you teach ?? ”

“Only if I’m an exception too. So you decided to come down to the party tonight too huh?”
“Yes! Either this or reading, and like I explained to Mark, these kids are definitely funnier.” She smiled and look at Sam.

“Cute, but definitely not.” Bette laughed and shook her head. “Even if I did, those seniors would be all over me just to get some, and i’d rather not be the reason everyone comes back to school tomorrow with a hangover.”

Bette smiled, “Thank you. I honestly was thinking the same thing, ball drops in an hour though so it was either reading alone in my dorm, or supervising this. Definitely, not a hard choice.” She laughed and grabbed the drink, taking a sip.
“Same, besides all of my family is back in Korea why not spend it with these kids.” He laughed as he took a sip of his own and added “Anything you’re expecting of the new year?”
“I’m hoping I can get my little brother to come live with me, that or maybe even some form of romance. Just something to get my out of my boring shell.” She laughed and raised her brow. “Korea, huh? Is that hard for you to have them so far away?”

“Oh most definitely, they do it a lot from where I came from. But, granted that place is filled with southern liberal men, who have fun with that stuff. She laughed and rolled her eyes. “Is this the first New Years you’ve had in America?”
clara nodded. “ it is ! i usually travel with my family, but this being my senior year and all, i decided to stay for the party. i wouldn’t say i’m missing too much since they went to punta del este this year and i’ve been there twice already. ”
Bette took a sip of her drink, and then continued to talk, “Although, Punta Del Este sounds gorgeous, we’re glad you stayed to join us tonight at LAAPA.” She smiled sweetly and held out her hand. “Miss Cecilia.”

Bette shrugged her shoulders and gave a large grin. “That’s America for you. Just add it to the list of societal things we should be fixing right now. We usually kiss when the ball drops, and I know some people who shoot off guns.”
“ shoot off guns ?? ” she asked in disbelief. “ now, that’s america for you. ”
