Librarian book rec: Not Now, Not Ever by Lily Anderson

Why you’ll love it: As a huge fan of Oscar Wilde, there was no way I could resist a novel inspired by The Importance of Being Earnest. Rather than a true-to-plot retelling, Not Now, Not Ever takes some of the ideas and fun of Earnest, but brings them into a story and setting that are sure to be enjoyable even for Wilde novices. Even though Ever is way smarter than I am, she was a fun main character to read about. I loved her ambition and determination, and I loved how that didn’t stop her from also making friends and starting a romance. While this book didn’t quite make me want to go to genius camp (so much work!) it did make me want to spend more time with Ever, her friends, and her family.

Librarian book rec: Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Why you’ll love it: Long Way Down is a fast read, but that doesn’t mean it packs any less of a punch. Told in verse (the author Jason Reynolds is a poet as well as a novelist), it’s somehow beautiful while still sounding like the way a real person would talk. Long Way Down gets right to the heart of grief, anger, culture, revenge, and more, without wasting a single word. I went through every up and down with Will, and was thinking about him long after the book ended. Although plenty of the book is unbelievable – dead people don’t appear in elevators – the emotional heart of it is as real as anything I’ve read.  

P.S. If you aren’t convinced yet, Long Way Down has won the Walter Dean Myers Award, a Newberry Medal Honor, a Michael L. Printz Award Honor, a Coretta Scott King Award Honor, and an Odyssey Award Honor for the excellent audiobook.

Norway has just emerged as a challenger for Japan’s title as Masters of Awesome Cuteness. These photos were taken on the set of “Piip-Show”, a live reality tv show following the lives of a cast comprised of wild birds and the occasional squirrel. Conceived by Norwegian freelance photographer Magne Klann, the show takes place on a set which is an outdoor bird feeder modeled after Java, a well-known coffee shop in Oslo, Norway.

“Different personalities meet inside the bar. Among others a short tempered nuthatch, a blue tit with the memory of a gold fish, a happy-go-lucky great tit, and a depressed bullfinch. Like in any other bar there is bickering, petty theft, fighting and attempts at romance”.

We can’t help but try to pair these animals with various cast members from Seinfeld.

Billed as the very first reality show for birds, the “Piip-Show” is a three-month-long project that’s being broadcast live on the Norwegian broadcasting network NRK.
