Notes on my First Love (Excerpt)

And I know now when I should have left, but I’m a coward who can’t face

A broken heart and I would rather dig deeper into my love until my hands bleed

Than face the reality that we were never going to last to see Boston

Or the apartment with the view, or the garden with the tulips because I am horrible

At keeping potted plants alive but I love the feeling of the soil under my fingertips

The earth staining my hands as you press your thumbs into my open palms

Like jam filled cookies

And the worst part is that you let me believe, that you held me close to you

And dreamt with me even when you knew you didn’t love me anymore

You didn’t love me anymore and you probably thought you were letting me have something to hold onto

But it would have been kinder to just let me down in peace.
