allow me to take a moment to be mama slut again and remind everyone to learn about DoxyPEP. it is a new use of antibiotics that can help stop the spread of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. it's just a single 200mg dose of the antibiotic doxycycline taken 24-72 hours after sex where fluids might have been exchanged

this is part of why it's less likely that my current symptoms are from an STI. that said, from what we've seen so far DoxyPEP is not as effective against gonorrhea*—only about 55%—as it is against other two. it also appears to be less effective against oral strains—which I take personal offense to

*this seems like it might be at least partially due to the fact that the most prevalent strains of gonorrhea had already become antibiotic resistant before the advent of DoxyPEP. perhaps counterintuitively it is hopeful that DoxyPEP could help stave off mass antibiotic resistance in chlamydia & syphilis, because if you never become reactive then the strain you have—and its knowledge of antibiotics—never gets passed along to the next people. there is always the risk that it could have the opposite effect, especially with the already clever gonorrhea, but it's been deemed worth the risk by all major sexual health departments I interact with

there are a couple of online providers who can help you get access to DoxyPEP as well as PrEP (a daily pill that helps prevent HIV) even if you don't have insurance. they'll even send the test kits to your house so you don't have to go deal with labs and potentially judgemental medical providers. I personally hate pricking my finger and I love making sex shamers squirm, so I opt for the lab lol
