âThink Garcia ever did band?â Lilac asked from the couch, popping popcorn in her mouth as Ashley fiddled with a toy truck her little cousin had left on the floor. âDunno. Probably.â She grinned, looking up. âCan you imagine her in one of those big ass marching band hats?âÂ
Lilac raised an eyebrow. âYes, one hundred percent, but what the hell are you doing to that poor truck?â Ashley frowned, looking down at the now dismantled plastic pick up truck. âI donât know.â She pouted and looked up at Lilac mournfully. âIâm bored,â she said.Â
âItâs Criminal Minds, Ash, how are you bored?âÂ
âWell, first of all, weâve seen this episode thirty thousand times,â Ashley replied, âand second of all⌠I dunno. Iâm bored. Weâve been cooped up inside all day despite the super nice weather, and nowâŚâ She groaned, flopping onto her back. âI donât know! I wanna do something!âÂ
Lilac bit her lip, watching Reid spout facts on screen for a second before answering, âWe could try the Mega Volt.â Ashley raised a brow. âYou wanna go on the Mega Volt?â she asked incredulously.Â
Lilac shrugged, peering down at the popcorn bowl for the remainders of her popcorn. âYeah. I mean, weâre⌠adults, now, right?â She looked up and grinned at Ashley. âNot scared, are you, Maxwell?âÂ
Ashley grinned right back, jumping up to grab her keys. âNot at all, Anderson. Letâs go.âÂ
Lilacâs brows jumped. âRight now?âÂ
âDamn right, scaredy cat.âÂ
Lilac sighed, eating the last few kernels, and followed Ashley out to her car. âWhen was the last time we were even on a roller coaster?â Lilac asked as Ashley pulled out of the driveway. Ashley frowned. âI dunno. Didnât we go last summer?âÂ
âOh my God, with Ryland,â Lilac exclaimed.Â
âOh my God, Ryland!â Ashley gasped. âThen that wasnât last year, but what - tenth? Sophomore year? Jesus, feels like forever ago!â Lilac scowled. âThank God. Fuckinâ prick.â Ashley rolled her eyes. âAnd you call me dramatic.âÂ
Lilac scoffed. âDude, he cheated on you! At prom!âÂ
âYeah, well, at least I donât have to deal with him now,â Ashley replied with a shrug. âAnyway, that wouldâve been - what, two years ago? I canât believe we havenât been backâŚâ Lilac pursed her lips. âI must have blocked out anything that had to do with dick face.âÂ
Ashley snickered. âDick face. Jesus. But yeah, he sure did love his roller coasters, huh? We must have gone thirty times a week back then.â Lilac groaned. âMore. I was down there more than I was at your house!âÂ
âAnd we never went on Mega Volt?âÂ
âI guess,â Lilac murmured, trying to think.Â
âWell,â Ashley sighed, turning into the parking lot, âeither way, weâre doing it now.â Lilac bit her lip, looking up at the monster of a roller coaster, and began to regret suggesting trying it. Ashley smirked, catching Lilacâs expression. âNot backing out now, are you, Lila?â she asked smugly, and Lilac managed to smile and reply, âNot in a million years,â as she unbuckled and stepped out of the car.Â
âThink heâll let us in for free?â Ashley whispered to Lilac, glancing at the bored looking attendant sitting in the box. Lilac shrugged. âMaybe.â Ashley grinned, unbuttoning her top a bit and fixing her hair. âJesus Christ,â Lilac muttered.Â
âHi!â Ashley chirped as they made it to the stand. The attendant, who looked about their age and a little nerdy, was wearing a uniform and a name tag that said Hi! Iâm Devon! He looked up when he saw the girls and put his phone down.Â
Ashley flipped her hair over her shoulder, leaning against the counter with a cheery smile, and Lilac rolled her eyes. The attendantâs eyes widened, his gaze just a little too low for comfort. Lilac was tempted to punch him.Â
She didnât, and he cleared his throat. He met Ashleyâs eyes, his expression making it all too clear that it took a lot of effort to do so. âHow, uh - how can I help you?â he stammered, and Ashley giggled. âWe wanna go on the ride!â
âRight,â he said. âUm, well - itâs, uh - itâs four dollars per, uh - per person.âÂ
Ashley pouted, batting her eyelashes at him. âWell, see, thatâs the problem, uh⌠Devon... I forgot my wallet at homeâŚâ Devon laughed a bit awkwardly, adjusting his glasses. âWell, itâs pretty slow today, so, uh⌠I guess if you⌠if you just want toâŚâ He gestured behind him. âI wonât tell.â
âOh my God!â Ashley squealed, leaning over the counter to peck him on the cheek. âYouâre literally our savior! Right Li?â Lilac scowled. âRight,â she muttered. Ashley giggled again and started walking to the ride. âThanks, Devon!â she called.Â
âLaying it on a bit thick, arenât you?â Lilac said under her breath as she followed Ashley onto the platform. Ashley shrugged, sliding into the seat and strapping herself in. âI wanted funnel cake or something, and shitâs expensive,â she replied, buttoning her shirt again.Â
âUh⌠right,â Lilac said, hesitating before stepping in.Â
âComing in or not?â Ashley asked, a brow cocked challengingly.Â
âComing in,â Lilac said, laughing nervously. She strapped in, and Ashley frowned, nudging Lilacâs shoulder. âHey, we donât actually have to do this if you donât want toâŚâ She faded off, but Lilac shook her head. âNope, nope, Iâm, uh - Iâm fineâŚâÂ
Ashley grinned. âIf you say so.âÂ
The coaster began to climb, slowly but surely, and Lilac glanced over at Ashley. She was grinning ear to ear, looking absolutely ecstatic, and Lilac smiled a bit, loosening her grip just slightly on the metal bar. âMaybe this wonât be so baâ!âÂ
FWOOM.Â
The coaster dropped.Â
Lilac screamed as Ashley did, although she had a sneaking suspicion that Ashley was somehow screaming in joy rather than agony. Ashley laughed, and Lilac wanted to call her a psychopath, but it was a bit difficult seeing as her heart was in her stomach and she could barely breathe.Â
The track evened out, and Lilac felt herself start to breathe again. âOh my God,â Ashley said giddily, âthis is fucking amazing!â Lilac took a few panting gasps and loosened her grip again. âI dunno about that,â she whispered as the coaster started to climb again.Â
âPut your hands up this time!â Ashley told her.Â
Lilac laughed dryly. âNo.âÂ
âCâmon!â Ashley laughed, lifting her hand for her and grinning when Lilac squeaked. Ashley whooped when they reached the top, and Lilac screamed, trying to bring her hand back down. Ashley did too, and then, before she could think, before she could process -Â
Lilac put her hand on top of Ashleyâs.Â
And by now, of course, they were hurtling two million miles an hour down a track that could turn at any moment and kill both of them within a second, so she wasnât about to lift her hand again.
So she hung onto Ashley for dear life, not even noticing when Ashley flipped her hand around so they were actually, really holding hands, and prayed to God that she wouldnât die because of a stupid roller coaster.Â
Once more, the track evened out, and Lilac flushed when she realized she was holding hands with Ashley. She knew she should let go, knew that wasnât what friends did, but then they were at the top of a drop again. Lilac concentrated on breathing and told herself Ashley didnât mind - she couldâve let ages ago, but she didnât.Â
Two more gut wrenching drops, and the ride was over.Â
When the cart slowed and came to a stop at last, Ashley slid her hand out of Lilacâs and hopped out of the seat looking rosy and absolutely unfazed, but Lilac had to take a second to catch her breath.Â
âJesus, Li,â Ashley laughed, shaking out her hand as Lilac stepped onto the platform, âyou almost broke my hand!â Lilac let out a shaky laugh. âRight,â she mumbled, and Ashley raised an eyebrow. âHey, you okay?âÂ
âYup,â Lilac replied.Â
Ashley grinned. âGreat! Letâs get some funnel cake, Iâm starved!âÂ

Cherry Tree: Chapter Six: Smooth Like Mick Jagger

Ashley groaned as she helped Lilac drag the fire pit out of her shed and into the back yard. âWhy are we doing this again?â she panted, straining her voice dramatically even though she was barely helping.Â
Lilac rolled her eyes. âPatience, Ash, weâre almost there.âÂ
âThis is too much work,â Ashley whined, collapsing on the ground once they made it to roughly the center of the yard. âYouâre doing nothing,â Lilac replied, picking up twigs and dry leaves that had fallen from the cherry tree.Â
âYeah, and itâs still too much work,â Ashley grumbled, rolling onto her stomach to watch as Lilac crumpled up newspaper and threw them into the pit with the branches. âYouâre putting way too much effort into this, Lila,â Ashley said.
âAnd youâre putting way too much effort into complaining,â Lilac said back.Â
âNo effort at all, Li, itâs a natural talent of mine.âÂ
âBeing a pain in the ass?â Lilac said under her breath. âYeah, Iâve noticed.âÂ
âHey!â Ashley exclaimed, chucking a twig at her.Â
Lilac grinned, picking up the twig and pointedly throwing it into the pit. âTwigs get thrown in there, Ash, not at me.â Ashley groaned, rolling back onto her back and staring up at the sky. âThink weâre polluting the earth with this mess?â she mused, and Lilac rolled her eyes.Â
âNo more than youâre polluting the earth with your stupidity.âÂ
Ashley scoffed as she sat up to properly glare at her. âLilac! Iâve raised you better than to insult your best friend like this!â Lilac brows jumped. âOkay, first of all, there are so many things wrong with that sentence, but listen - the insults will stop once you start helping.âÂ
âGoes against my moral code,â Ashley sighed, standing up at last only to plop herself right back down into one of the lounge chairs Lilac had just pulled out. Lilac didnât reply, and Ashley frowned, looking around to see Lilac leaned against the door with a lighter in her hand.Â
âYou know,â Lilac said, âmy dad says itâs bad to start fires without adults around.âÂ
Ashley frowned. âUm, Lila?â she murmured. âYou havenât seen your dad in, like... a decade.âÂ
Lilac smirked, clicking the lighter and producing a flame as she walked over to the fire pit. âI know,â she replied, touching the flame to the sticks and paper. âWhich means thereâs nobody here to stop us.âÂ
Ashley giggled, knocking her hip against Lilacâs. âYou know,â she said giddily as the flames rose higher, âyou and me could have quite the career in arson.â Lilac nodded, sighing happily as she stared into the fire. âI know.âÂ
âOkay, Peter Dinsdale,â Ashley laughed, tapping Lilac on the shoulder, âletâs get some marshmallows, huh?â Lilac nodded and went inside to grab a bag as Ashley plopped back down into the chair.
Lilac came back out a second later, marshmallows in hand. âCatch, blondie,â she called, a teasing smile on her lips as she threw the bag in Ashleyâs general direction. âNice try,â Ashley snickered, watching lazily as the bag hit the ground, âbut Iâm not gonna move.âÂ
âYou should be ashamed of yourself,â Lilac muttered, bending down to pick it up.Â
âWhy should I be, when youâre shameful enough for the both of us?âÂ
Lilac pursed her lips. âDo you want sâmores or not?âÂ
âIs that even a question?â Ashley asked, grinning as she held out her hands for a marshmallow. Lilac smirked, holding the bag just out of Ashleyâs reach. âGotta work for your dessert, Ash,â she sing songed. Ashley scoffed, reaching all the way forward, but she still couldnât reach it.Â
âLiiiilaaac,â Ashley whined, flopping back onto the chair. âPretty, pretty, please?âÂ
âMan, these are delicious,â Lilac said dramatically, popping one into her mouth. âYouâre really missing out here, Ash - just stand up, and you can have one!â Ashley huffed and jumped up, snatching the bag out of Lilacâs hands.Â
âI hate you,â she mumbled, spearing a marshmallow with a stick.Â
âThanks, Ash,â Lilac said absently, brow furrowed as she tried to find the perfect spot to brown her marshmallow. âOh, Jesus,â Ashley muttered, sitting down again and plunging her marshmallow into the fire, âI forgot about this.âÂ
Lilac frowned, looking up. âWhat?âÂ
âYour impossible standards for marshmallows,â Ashley replied, pursing her lips. Lilac sighed. âAnd I forgot about this,â she said, watching Ashley blow the dancing flames from the charred top of her marshmallow.Â
âWhat, what a perfectly cooked marshmallow actually looks like?â Ashley said, and Lilac shook her head in disgust. âThat marshmallow is burnt, Ash - youâve gotta have patience with these things.â She glanced back at her own marshmallow, browning to a perfect golden color near the embers.Â
âSee?â Lilac said in delight, pulling her stick back up to inspect the marshmallow.Â
âToo much effort,â Ashley told her through a mouth full of marshmallow as she grabbed yet another from the bag. âNot at all,â Lilac said happily, carefully balancing it between two pieces of graham cracker and some chocolate before sliding the stick away.Â
âHeavenly,â Lilac sighed, eyes closed in bliss as she savored her sâmore.Â
âJesus,â Ashley muttered, giggling softly. âYou look like youâre getting off on that thing.âÂ
âA few more and I just might,â Lilac said, opening her eyes with a grin. âWe gotta do this more often,â she went on, placing another marshmallow on her stick and gently placing it in the flames. âI know,â Ashley replied. âI canât believe we havenât done this before!âÂ
Lilac nodded, standing up to check on her marshmallow closer. âYeah,â she agreed, shifting the placement of her marshmallow and tugging her chair closer with her foot. âI just think that maybe - ow!âÂ
Ashley burst out laughing as Lilac fell on her butt and her marshmallow went flying. Sheâd sat back down with too much force and fell backwards, ending up with her legs in the air and her head in the dirt. âRIP to your marshmallow!â Ashley gasped through her laughter.Â
âOh, damn it!â Lilac groaned, staring mournfully at her marshmallow, which had landed in the dirt next to her chair. âSmooth like Mick Jagger, huh?â Ashley giggled, and Lilac rolled her eyes but muttered, âYeah, smooth like chunky peanut butter.âÂ
Ashley grinned. âLike a gravel parking lot.âÂ
âOh, shut up,â Lilac laughed.Â
Ashley giggled. âNot for a million dollars.â

âReally,â Ashley said, chewing on a french fry thoughtfully, âhorror movies are just a way to cater to the toxic masculinity of the male species. It simply allows men to show off their, uh⌠brash courage in a way thatâs - supposedly - impressively macho. That way, women can cling to their male counterparts and swoon as the men keep an indifferent expression on their face while people on the screen get gruesomely murdered.â
There was a beat of silence.
Ashley glanced at Lilac, who was staring at her with her mouth open.
Ashley frowned. âWhat?â
âAsh?â Lilac said quietly. âAre you⌠okay?â
âOh, no, never,â Ashley said absently. âBut, uh, how about you? Horror movies? Yay or nay?â Lilac frowned, peering into her glass as she twirled a french fry around in her milk shake. âUm⌠yay, but only if you wonât bite off my head.â
Ashley shrugged. âI wonât.â
âGreat,â Lilac began. âWell, I think theyâre fun. Girls can be impressively macho, too. I mean, take me, for example. Iâm not scared of them, and Iâm not a guy. Itâs not just for men to show off. Itâs for anybody to. Apparently, there was this one study thing that said that these movies basically make us anxious the entire time, which makes us super excited and makes all our senses, like, power up or whatever. So itâs the brain, not the⌠hormones or whatever.â
âYeah, but the whole stereotype is just a bitâŚâ
âStereotypes are something different altogether,â Lilac muttered. She sighed, continuing a bit louder, âWhen was the last time we watched Jaws, anyway?â Ashley frowned, pausing as she thought. âFreshman year. Remember that party at Coby Nicklesonâs house?â
Lilac shuddered. âHow could I forget.â She pointed a french fry at Ashley accusingly. âI will never forgive you for dragging me to that hell show.â Ashley scoffed. âIâll never forgive you for not forcing me to stay home! Of all the parties you couldâve chosen to cave in for, you chose Nicklesonâs. You couldnâtâve chosen - oh, I dunno, Brandon Wilderâs? I heard Toby Matthews got into, like, three fistfights that night!â
âAnd thatâs a reason to go?â Lilac replied incredulously. âYou should be thanking me, Ash, you psycho!â Ashley pursed her lips. âItâs drama,â she said. âPlus, I was, like, in love with Brandon that year, and I heard he was asking around for me.â
Lilac raised a brow. âWho told you that?â
Ashley frowned, looking down. âWell, it was Katey Stevens, but -â
âKatey?â Lilac interrupted in a laugh. âJesus, Katey Stevens told me you were dating Toby like six times that year alone, and one time, she told a whole buncha people I was dating him. I mean, can you imagine?â
âOkay, okay, well a girl can hope,â Ashley mumbled.
Lilac frowned. âBrandonâs not even that attractive.â
âBro, youâre gay.â
Lilac glanced up, expressionless, and there was a beat of silence before they both broke out laughing and Lilac put her head in her hands. âTouche,â she gasped through her laughter. âTo-fucking-che.â

Pans: A Cherry Tree Extra

Read the fic here, and other extras here!
Lilac walked into the Maxwellâs kitchen, eyeing the bag of chips on the counter as she slid the door shut behind her. Ashley was sitting at the counter, doing something on her laptop, but she slammed the screen shut as soon as she heard Lilac.Â
âHeyyy, Lilac,â Ashley said, spinning around on the stool. âHowâs it going?âÂ
Lilac blinked. âAre you good?âÂ
âOh, well, Iâm just fantastic, Lila,â Ashley drawled. âAny better and itâd be obscene!âÂ
Ashley pouted, leaning forward dramatically. âOh, but Lilac, wherever would I get all my inspiration for my future spectacular hats collection?â Lilac grinned. âGoogle. Speaking of which, what were you doing when I came in?âÂ
âNothing.âÂ
âNothing, huh?â Lilac asked, creeping her fingers towards the laptop.
âNothing,â Ashley confirmed, pressing her hand against the lid of the laptop to keep Lilac from opening it. âZero, zilch, nada, nothing.â Lilac raised a brow. âSaying it in other languages wonât distract me from your sketchiness, you know.âÂ
âShould give me some cool points, though,â Ashley replied, and Lilac scoffed a laugh. âAshley Maxwell, needing cool points? Never thought Iâd see the day!â Ashley opened her mouth, her neck tinging red, and said, âI mean - of course I donât need cool points! Absolutely not! Other people get cool points from me, thatâs how cool I am - I have some to spare!âÂ
âWow,â Lilac said.Â
Ashley sighed, leaning back in her chair.
âWas it gay?â Lilac asked.Â
âWhat?âÂ
Lilac smirked, leaning in and lowering her voice. âWas it gay? The porn?âÂ
âLILAC!âÂ
âIâm joking,â Lilac laughed, stepping away and grabbing the bag of chips.Â
Ashley huffed, walking over to the couch with her laptop in her arms. She flicked through the TV, sending glares in Lilacâs direction for eating the chips too loud before eventually stealing one herself.Â
Then Lilac went to the bathroom.Â
And when she came back, Ashley was on her laptop, again, and when Lilac walked up behind her, she slammed it shut - again. This time, though, Lilac saw a glimpse of the screen, and she laughed.Â
âAsh,â Lilc said, leaning over the edge of the couch, âif you want new cooking stuff for your birthday, all you have to do is ask!â Ashley frowned, looking around at her. âCooking stuff? What are you - I donât - what?âÂ
Lilac raised a brow. âPans? Youâre looking at pots and pans?â Ashley opened her mouth to reply, and then decided against it, and snickered, shaking her head. Lilac frowned, coming around to sit next to her on the couch.Â
âListen,â Lilac said seriously. âI know that the last time we cooked it didnât go too well -âÂ
âThat was not my fault,â Ashley interrupted, and Lilac scoffed. âUm, yeah, yeah it was,â she replied incredulously. âYouâre the one who dropped the towel on the burner!â Ashley rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest. âYeah, well, youâre the one who was dancing like a maniac.âÂ
âThat has nothing to do with -â Lilac sighed, cutting herself off. âNevermind. The point is, Iâll get you⌠I donât know, pans, or whatever, if you want them.â Ashley giggled, putting her head in her hands. âYouâre so fucking dumb, Li.âÂ
Lilacâs jaw dropped. âWhat?âÂ
Ashley laughed, opening the lid of her laptop.Â
She was on Google, and the query was pans. The screen was full of - well, pans, and Ashley was grinning at Lilac like there was something funny going on. There was a full second of silence, Lilacâs gaze darting from the screen to Ashleyâs expression in confusion.Â
Finally, Ashley said, âDonât you get it?âÂ
Lilacâs brow furrowed, and she looked closer at the screen. âGet what? What am I -âÂ
âIâm pan, Li,â Ashley laughed.Â
Lilac blinked. âHuh?âÂ
âLilac,â Ashley said, a bit more serious, âIâm pansexual.âÂ
Lilac sat back, her face blank, and said, âOh.â Ashley groaned, reaching out to shake Lilacâs shoulders. âThis is comedic gold, Anderson! Câmon! Break a smile! Gimme some laughs!â She pouted. âOr at least pretend to. Youâre hurting my feelings.âÂ
âAsh, I -âÂ
âNever mind,â Ashley sighed, still grinning to herself as she put her laptop on the coffee table and grabbed the remote. âWait, wait,â Lilac said, stealing the remote back so Ashley couldnât unpause the TV, âis this real?âÂ
âYeah,â Ashley said. Â
âThis is - I mean, youâre - this is your -â Lilac paused, and then - âYouâre gay?âÂ
âYeah,â Ashley said again.
âHuh,â Lilac said, and Ashley frowned. âWhat, is that not good enough?âÂ
âNo!â Lilac replied hurriedly. âI mean - I mean, yeah, itâs fine - of course itâs fine - and IâmâŚâ She bit her lip. âIâm impressed that youâre so⌠cool about it.â Ashley grinned. âWhen am I not cool? Thatâs my middle name, Li, you should know that - Ashley Cool Maxwell. Ashley the Coolest Maxwell. On my birth certificate, Li, swear to god.âÂ
âRight,â Lilac said with a smile. âOf course.âÂ
It wasnât until half way through the episode when she started giggling.Â
Ashley frowned, looking at her, and said, âWhat?âÂ
âPans,â Lilac gasped, laughing so hard she could barely talk. âPans!âÂ

Well, if the last one was a bit of insight on Lilacâs gay awakening, this was a bit of insight on Ashleyâs. As you can see, Ashley is much more nonchalant about it hehe and itâs a bit of insight on her humor, too!Â
Anyway, hereâs this, hope you liked it, and we would love you forever and ever if youâd give us some feedback here! (how many cool points do you guys have, huh? some to spare?)Â
But yeah! Thanks for reading and weâll see you on Saturday đÂ
âIt has no flavor,â Lilac groaned, taking another piece of Ashleyâs bubble gum cotton candy anyway. Ashley rolled her eyes, pushing her car into park and taking the stick out of Lilacâs hand. âYeah,â she said, âit does.âÂ
âOh, please,â Lilac sighed. âBubble gumâs not even a flavor. Technically, itâs pink. The Gold Medal brand started the whole blue and pink thing, you know, and people kinda just went along with it. So yours is actually pink vanilla, which means itâs not only flavorless, but also named in the most unoriginal fashion possible.â
âOkay, first of all,â Ashley argued, âdonât be hating on vanilla - youâre such a big fan of cookie dough ice cream, which is really just glorified vanilla, so donât even start. And also, originally named or not, mineâs still better than your puke green atrocity.â
Lilac raised an eyebrow. âOk, I donât know what youâve been eating, but puke is not -âÂ
âOh, you get my point,â Ashley interrupted. âBesides - no matter what that mess looks like, it tastes like acidic vomit.â Lilac smiled fondly despite herself and murmured, âYouâre too dramatic for your own good.âÂ
âAnd youâre too sappy,â Ashley said. âWe make a good pair.âÂ
âTrue that,â Lilac said back. She began to put her feet up on the dash, but Ashley tsked and swatted her legs away. âAbsolutely not,â she said sternly. Lilac sighed, mumbling an apology even though sheâd known the reprimand was coming before Ashley had said anything.Â
They were parked in the lot of the drive-in movie theater, sitting in Ashleyâs graduation gift of a bright red convertible Mini Cooper. Ever since sheâd gotten it at the beginning of the summer, it had been her pride and joy. Lilac still had the habit of putting her feet up on the dash whenever she could, since Ashley hadnât given a ratâs ass about her last car (her momâs Subaru hand-me-down).
They finished off their cotton candy as Jaws started on the screen, and Ashley immediately ripped open her family sized packet of Sour Skittles. Lilac watched her slide a handful into her palm and then into her mouth with mild disgust as she opened her own share sized bag of M&Ms and gently started eating them one at a time.Â
Ashley grinned when she caught Lilac staring and tilted the family size packet of Skittles in Lilacâs direction. âWant one?â she asked smugly, already aware of Lilacâs answer. âThose things taste like battery acid,â Lilac huffed, âand I even like most sour stuff.â
âNo, you donât,â Ashley replied. âYou think Lemon Tarts are sour, and theyâre straight up sweet!â Lilac rolled her eyes, shaking her head. âIf I can manage sour apple cotton candy, Iâve gotta have some say in the matter.âÂ
âCome on, Li, these arenât that sour - Iâve seen you eat Toxic Waste!â
âBecause they mix the sour flavoring with the candy! They donât just put a huge blast of sour coating on top of the actual candy,â Lilac insisted. Ashley pursed her lips, agreed despite herself, and ate another handful of Skittles. âM&Ms are boring, Sour Skittles are superior, and youâre wrong.Â
Lilac scoffed, shaking her head. âThatâs just - not even - M&Ms are not boring.âÂ
âYeah, they are!â Ashley exclaimed. âTheyâre, like, all the same flavor but with different color coatings! Whatâs the point? Like, why canât they just make them all brown for chocolate? Itâs like theyâre intentionally misleading you!âÂ
âOh, please,â Lilac replied. âWhen did a pop of color ever hurt anyone?âÂ
âWhen -â Ashley huffed, cutting herself off. âNever mind. Thatâs not the point. The point is that weâre missing the movie, so shut your cake hole.â Lilac grinned, knowing sheâd won, and tried to concentrate on the movie.Â
It didnât really work, though, with Ashley being her overly dramatic self and gasping every time something remotely scary happened. And, Lilac couldnât help but notice, Ashley was creeping closer and closer with every gruesome shark attack.Â
âJesus,â Ashley muttered at one point. âWhoever made this is, like⌠a genius. Itâs somehow terrifying but⌠gruesomely intriguing at the same time...â Lilac nodded. âYeah. He actually regretted it, though, the guy who made the book. He was, like, an ocean activist or something, and apparently, the movie just made everybody fear sharks for no reason.âÂ
Ashley frowned. âReally? So sharks arenât actually gonna kill me when we go to the beach tomorrow?â she asked, and Lilac raised an eyebrow. âWell, yeah, no, there are more people killed by cows than sharks a year, but wait - weâre going to the beach tomorrow?âÂ
âPerhaps,â Ashley said vaguely. âHey, didnât your great uncle get -âÂ
She stopped with a gasp as a sickening crunch echoed through the parking lot.Â
âWhy did we pick this movie, again?â she whispered when blood tinted water filled the big screen. âBecause Connor said you wouldnât be able to last the whole two hours,â Lilac replied, hiding a smirk.Â
Ashley pursed her lips and crossed her arms, feigning nonchalance and leaning away from Lilac, and Lilac immediately regretted answering the way she did. Ashleyâs indifference wasnât quite as impressive as it could have been, because the scene was relatively calm, but the entire facade dropped away when a loud bang sounded throughout the parking lot and Ashley grabbed Lilacâs hand.Â
Lilac jolted from the sudden touch, and Ashley blushed. She glanced at Lilac and grinned, squeezing her hand. âScary,â Ashley said, laughing a bit awkwardly before pulling her hand away. âYeah,â Lilac whispered. Â
Ashley toned down on the dramatics for the rest of the movie, and when the credits rolled, Lilac polished off her M&Ms and glanced over at Ashley, who was smirking at her. âSo,â Ashley said lowly, leaning in, âdo we have sex now?âÂ
Lilac paled. Sheâd fallen asleep. Definitely. This was a dream. An inappropriate one. A very inappropriate dream that she was going to wake up from any minute now. Any second, and sheâd wake up, and Ashley would drive them home.Â
Another second passed, and she still didnât wake up.Â
âWha - what?â Lilac stuttered.Â
Ashley burst out laughing at Lilacâs scandalized expression and shook her head. âYou look like a deer in headlights! Christ, I was joking, Li. Wanna go home or hit the diner for food? Iâm kinda hungryâŚâÂ
Lilacâs face felt about lit on fire, and she stammered out, âSure, if - if you want toâŚâÂ
âGreat!â Ashley chirped. âLetâs go!âÂ

(and The Wedding here)Â
Lilac was nervous.Â
Sure, sheâd thought about wearing a suit to dances before - rented one or two even - but sheâd never actually done it. And wearing the suits, breaking the stereotype so boldly in reality and not just in daytime fantasies, was a whole different ballpark indeed. Hell, it was a whole different ballgame.Â
But with Ashley behind her, cheering her on and hyping her up as she gushed compliments about her outfit, Lilac felt like she could just about do anything.Â
She was reaching for the pastel purple bowtie sheâd gotten when Ashley tapped her shoulder, wearing a bright smile.Â
âGuess what I found,â she said slyly, holding her hands behind her back.Â
Lilac frowned skeptically. âIf you crack an egg on my head or something -âÂ
âHow dare you think so poorly of me!â Ashley said dramatically, revealing a shiny blue bowtie from behind her back. Lilac scoffed, taking the bowtie and turning it around in her hands. âHow did you find this? That was, like, ten years ago!âÂ
Ashley shrugged, taking it to gently place it around Lilacâs neck. âCanât beat the classics, can ya?â she asked, smoothing her hands over the shoulders of Lilacâs jacket. âLooks great, Li,â she said quietly, half a smile on her lips as she met Lilacâs gaze in the mirror. âReally.âÂ
Lilac flushed, about to thank her when somebody cleared their throat from behind them.Â
They both looked around simultaneously, Lilacâs blush only intensifying. âReady to go?â Connor asked, leaning against the doorframe with a shadow of a smirk on his lips. âYeah,â Lilac said, flushing when her voice came out as a rasp and repeating, âYeah,â as Ashley did.Â
âWonderful,â Connor said, spinning around. âIâll be in the car.âÂ
It was only then that Lilac noticed his outfit, and she glanced at Ashley with a grin on her lips, giggling when their eyes met. Connor was wearing a spiffy tux complete with a grey vest, shiny black shoes, and a large red bowtie. Best of all, a flat black chauffeurâs cap sat on his head, perched crooked just about his ears.Â
âWhere did he even get that thing?â Lilac asked through a laugh, and Ashley shook her head. âI have no idea,â she replied. âBut I do know that I should probably get dressed⌠Meet you downstairs?âÂ
Lilac nodded, staring down the steps. âCall me if you need any help.âÂ
âWill do!â Ashley called. âJust donât rip your pants or anything âtill I get down there.âÂ
âBut once you do come down, I have permission?â Lilac asked with a raised brow.Â
âOh, shush,â Ashley laughed, turning around to get into her dress.Â
***
âWoah,â Lilac breathed when Ashley appeared at the top of the steps.Â
Her dress was an orangey color, tinged with pinks and whites that looked like a sunset and only made Ashleyâs natural glow that much brighter. Its hem floated just above the floor, and a diamond necklace sat on her neck above the dressâs sweetheart neckline.Â
Connor shot Lilac a knowing smirk, and Lilac bit the inside of her cheek.
âI know,â Ashley said smugly, stepping carefully down the stairs in her heels.Â
Lilac cleared her throat when Ashley reached the bottom of the steps. âYou clean up nice,â she said casually. Ashley bit her lip, trying and failing to hold back her grin. âYou cliche sonuvabitch,â she replied quietly.Â
There was a beat of silence, and then Ashley held out her arm. âShall we?âÂ
***
âYouâre gonna get melted chocolate everywhere,â Ashley warned as Lilac opened a bag of M&Ms. Lilac opened her mouth to argue, but then paused when the glass divider at the front of the limo slid down. âRemember who rented this thing, ladies - if you get melted chocolate on these seats youâre paying,â Connor warned, and Lilac laughed sheepishly. âIâll be careful.âÂ
âThat is why Skittles are superior,â Ashley said cheerfully as she popped a few Skittles into her mouth and the divider slid shut again. âLetâs not even get started,â Lilac sighed, and Ashley giggled and stole an M&M from Lilac.Â
Lilac scoffed. âHey!âÂ
âSharing is caring, Li.âÂ
âHypocrite.âÂ
âLove you too,â Ashley replied with a grin. Lilac flushed, momentarily flustered before she got her head back and reached over to grab the bag of Skittles - âHypocrites donât get candy, Ash.â - right out of her hands.Â
âHow rude!â Ashley exclaimed, lunging over the seat to try and grab the bag back.Â
Lilac gasped, startled, but managed to keep the candy just out of Ashleyâs reach.Â
There was a scuffle, laughter filling the back of the limo for a few seconds before, at last, Ashley was victorious and she snagged the bag from Lilac. But then she paused, frozen above Lilac as she caught her breath.Â
Theyâd somehow ended up on top of each other, their noses so close theyâd brush if Ashley would lean just a centimeter closer. And their lips, Ashleyâs glossy with lipstick, could touch, if Ashley would just⌠lean⌠inâŚÂ
But she didnât.Â
Of course not.Â
And she wouldnât have, even if the car hadnât stopped, even if Ryland hadnât knocked on the window of the limo at that exact moment. Thatâs what Lilac told herself, at least, as Ashley gave a smug smile that almost bordered on a smirk before pulling away as if nothing had ever happened.Â
âRy!â she squealed, bounding out of the limo and into Rylandâs arms.Â
Ryland Evans was Ashleyâs date for the night. He was a junior, a little bit older than the girls, and a bit of a jerk. He was very fond of parties, paid several tutors of the drop-dead gorgeous female type for help in several classes (and ended up hooking up with the majority of them), and didnât offer to pick Ashley up for prom.Â
And sure, on principle Lilac was infuriated that the guy Ashley deemed acceptable for prom wasnât even polite enough to do something as basic as drive her to the venue, but in reality, Lilac was more than ecstatic to spend extra time with Ashley. Especially on prom night.Â
Regardless, that extra time was over, and now Lilac was left breathless in the backseat of the limo as Ashley skipped into the venue on Rylandâs arm. Lilac let out a defeated sigh, running her hands over her face exhaustedly. Despite everything, there was a small part of her that had been so sure something would happen that night.
Connor came around and opened the door again, ducking down to ask Lilac, âHey, you good in there?â Lilac managed a smile. âYeah,â she replied, âyeah, Iâm fine.â Connor grinned and held out his hand. âReady?âÂ
Lilac shrugged, looking down at her suit. The sparkly blue bow tie glittered up at her, and a grin curved her lips involuntarily. âYeah,â she said softly. She cleared her throat and smiled up at Connor. âYeah,â she said again, and she took his hand and let him lead her into the building.
Prom wasnât as bad as Lilac was expecting. Connor sat with her almost the whole night, talking about anything and everything and keeping a smile on her face despite Ashleyâs dancing with someone who was very obviously not Lilac right in front of them.Â
It was almost too perfect. Ashley was there, so close yet so far, in her gorgeous sunset dress, smiling that adorable smile of hers, and Lilac couldnât do anything about it. She just had to sit, and watch, as she flirted with Ryland and let him twirl her around the dance floor.Â
Lilac lost sight of them after a while, and as Connor started to gaze wistfully at a group of his friends in the corner, she told him he didnât have to sit with her anymore. He thanked her a bit sheepishly before running off, and Lilac decided to go and get a breath of fresh air.Â
She was almost feeling better outside, leaned up against a railing as she let the cool salt air breeze over her. She pulled off her bowtie, smiling at the glittery blue fabric, and then sighed, sliding a piece of gum into her mouth as she stared up at the moon.Â
Her peaceful silence was interrupted, though, when a couple came stumbling out of the building, giggling as they started to make out in a corner. Lilac rolled her eyes, debating whether or not she should go back inside or walk around outside, when something clicked.Â
That was Ryland.Â
Ryland fucking Evans. Â
And the girl?Â
The girl was not Ashley.Â
No, she was about the opposite of Ashley.Â
This girl didnât have anything on Lilacâs Ashley, and Ryland was making out with her.Â
Lilac spun around, pulling up her sleeves and squaring her shoulders as she stepped over to him. In retrospect, she probably wouldnât have done anything even if things hadnât turned out as they had, but in the heat of the moment, Lilac was ready to throw punches.Â
âWhat,â she said, pulling his shoulder around so heâd see her, âthe FUCK are you doing?âÂ
He had the audacity to look confused. âI - what?âÂ
âYou think you can come here and disrespect Ash like this?â Lilac shouted. âLike hell you can!â She closed the distance, grabbing his collar and shoving him against the wall. âYou bastard,â she hissed.Â
âHey!â Ryland yelled, struggling in her grip. âHey, what the hell, bitch?âÂ
âYouâre gonna -âÂ
âLilac!â Ashley shouted from behind them, and Lilac paused, glancing back at Ashley. âThis jerk was making out with her,â Lilac seethed, âand heâs going to pay.â She turned back to Ryland, pulling back a fist to punch him, and -Â
âCâmere, fighter,â Connor said from behind her, and Lilac scoffed as he pulled her off of Ryland. âWhat are you doing?â Lilac asked incredulously. âGo back to the car, Li,â Connor told her, but when Lilac shook her head, still glaring at Ryland, Connor frowned. âGo with Ash, Lilac. Iâll take care of him.âÂ
âFine,â Lilac muttered, shaking out her sleeves and adjusting her collar as she walked back to Ashley and grabbed her hand without thinking. âCome on, Ash,â she said, and Ashley followed her back to the limo.Â
The car wasnât too far away, and they watched out the window as Connor slugged Ryland right in the nose. âJesus, dude, Iâm sorry!â Ryland yelped, his hands over his nose as blood gushed over his lips and chin.Â
âDamn right,â Connor said, flexing his hand as he watched Ryland run towards the parking lot. Lilac and Ashley waited in hushed silence as Connor got into the limo. âLetâs go,â Connor said quietly, and he let the partition slide up between them as he drove off.Â
It was only then that Lilac heard Ashley hiccup a sob, and all of Lilacâs anger faded away as she looked over to see Ashley crying softly next to her. âHey,â Lilac murmured, sliding over to put an arm around her shoulders. âHey, you alright?âÂ
Ashley shook her head, looking up at Lilac with a small smile. âNo,â she said, âno, Iâm not fine, because - because my mascaraâs smudged.â Lilac laughed a bit, wiping away a tear from Ashleyâs cheek.Â
âI spent - I spent hours on this, Li,â Ashley said, sniffling as she looked sadly at her mascara smeared fingertips. âI know,â Lilac murmured, holding her close as she cried. She hugged her tight, not caring about the dark makeup that would surely be staining her crisp white shirt, and whispered, âBut you still look beautiful.âÂ
At that, Ashley giggled and smacked Lilacâs arm gently. âFuckinâ sap.âÂ
âShut up,â Lilac laughed.Â
There was a beat of silence before Ashley turned to look at Lilac, smiling just a bit. âThanks, Lila,â she murmured. Lilac smiled back. âAnytime,â she replied, her voice just a tad hoarse, because they were so close - again - and what if she didnât imagine how Ashleyâs gaze slipped to Lilacâs lips for just half a second? And what she just leaned in? And what if Ashley felt the same way? And what if -Â
Ashley turned away, tucking her head into the crook of Lilacâs neck.Â
Lilac bit her lip and watched out the window as they drove back home.Â

Cherry Tree: Chapter Three: Sandy Ass
~1,500 words

âLila, I see spiders,â Ashley whined, clinging to Lilacâs arm as they walked under the boardwalk. Lilac rolled her eyes, not exactly annoyed by Ashleyâs touchy feely habits that arose when she was scared, and said, âYouâre so dramatic. They wonât hurt you. You know that out of forty thousand species of spiders, less than one tenth of one percent have been responsible for human deaths?âÂ
Ashley just stared at her, and Lilac sighed. âWhat?âÂ
âNumbers,â Ashley said with a grimace.Â
âJesus,â Lilac muttered, smiling despite herself. âMy point is, theyâre not gonna hurt you. Besides, theyâre smaller than you.â Ashley pursed her lips, eyeing a dark corner warily as they walked by. âGrenades are smaller than I am too,â she said. âWanna tell me they canât hurt me either?âÂ
Lilac laughed, shaking her head. âYouâre impossible.âÂ
âImpossibly correct,â Ashley said back, and Lilac just smiled and didnât dignify her with a reply. A few seconds of silence passed before Ashley asked, âWhenâre we stopping, again? My feet hurtâŚâÂ
Lilac raised an eyebrow, glancing down at Ashleyâs flip flops. âTold you to wear sneakers.â Ashley huffed. âTheyâre new,â she said. âI donât wanna get them dirty.â Lilac sighed. âYouâll never wear them anywhere with that mindset.âÂ
âLilaaaaaa,â Ashley dragged dramatically. âIâm so bored! Whatâre we even gonna do? Thereâs nothing to do under here besides twiddle our thumbs!â Lilac rolled her eyes. âThink. Sometimes we just need a second of silence.â She frowned, feigning curiosity. âDo you know what that word means? Silence?âÂ
âFuck off,â Ashley grumbled, crossing her arms across her chest petulantly.Â
Much to Ashleyâs relief, Lilac stopped a few seconds later under a section uncovered by shrubs or people and gestured to the sea, open and blue, stretching out before them. âHere we go,â Lilac said. She sat down in the sand, leaned up against a wooden support for the boardwalk, and closed her eyes as she took a deep breath.Â
She peeked one eye open when a few too many seconds passed without a complaint from Ashley, and then closed it again when she saw her expression. Ashley was standing above her, her face contorted in an expression combining severe disgust and mild incredulousness.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â Lilac sighed.Â
âYou want me to sit in the sand?âÂ
âYou do it all the time, Ash.âÂ
âWith a towel! In a swimsuit!âÂ
Lilac opened her eyes. âAshley,â she said firmly, âsit down.âÂ
âIâm blaming you if people stare at my ass on the way back âcause itâs covered in sand.âÂ
Lilac snickered. âPeople stare at your ass anyway,â she muttered under her breath, and Ashley scoffed a laugh and flipped her off. âImpossible!â she exclaimed, and Lilac grinned. âImpossibly correct,â she mimicked, raising her voice a bit.Â
Ashley rolled her eyes. âWhat were you saying about a second of silence?âÂ
Lilac let her jaw drop dramatically, mocking disbelief. âAshley Maxwell, asking for peace and quiet - never thought Iâd see the day.â Ashley put her head in her hands and groaned, âShut up,â as she finally sat down across from Lilac.Â
Lilac just let the silence linger, watching the waves crash against the shore and the moon sparkle against the inky night sky. Ashley looked up a moment later, glancing at Lilac before following her gaze to the sea. She opened her mouth to say something, but then looked back at Lilacâs happy expression and decided against it.Â
They sat like that for only a few minutes before Ashley moved to sit next to Lilac, who scooched over a bit to let her lean against the wood. âWeâre graduates,â Ashley whispered, and Lilac nodded, keeping her gaze on the water. âSure are.âÂ
There was a beat of silence, and then Ashley bit her lip.Â
âHave you ever been to the drive in?â she asked softly.Â
âNope.âÂ
âWanna go?âÂ
Lilac finally met her eyes, an eyebrow raised, and said, âWhy? Thought you had a traumatizing date with the idiot from your calc class thereâŚâ Ashley shook her head. âNope. That was the diner behind school. But Iâve never been to that theater, and⌠Shouldnât we go before⌠I dunno, before weâre adults?âÂ
Ashley felt a flash of panic at getting rejected as Lilac paused, but then it was washed away when a smile curved Lilacâs lips and she nodded. âYeah. Sounds fun.â Ashley grinned. âBet your ass it does. More fun than this mess, anyway.âÂ
âBarâs not too high,â Lilac sighed, and Ashleyâs grin widened. âHa!â she exclaimed. âAgree with me, then, do you? This isnât as, uh⌠exhilarating as you thought itâd be, huh?â Lilac smiled as she rolled her eyes, shaking her head, and began to get up.Â
But Ashley stopped her, putting a hand on her arm and sending an electric shock through her body, and said, âWait, wait - Iâve never seen the sunrise on the beach, either. Letâs stay? For the bucket list?âÂ
Lilac scoffed. âOh, so now you wanna stay?âÂ
âShut up and sit down, sandy ass.âÂ
âSandy ass,â Lilac echoed with a grin. âThatâs a new one.âÂ
âA new, impossibly correct one.âÂ
âOh, shush,â Lilac murmured, settling back down beside her.Â
There, they sat for hours. They bickered back and forth, remembering various high school shenanigans and watching the waves, until Lilac heard Ashleyâs breaths slow and felt her head rest on her shoulder as she fell asleep.Â
Lilac smiled at the sea, and closed her eyes, and fell asleep happy.Â
***
Lilac woke up first. It must have been fate, because the sun was just peeking up from the horizon as her eyes fluttered open, and, resisting the urge to kiss her awake, Lilac gently nudged Ashleyâs arm to wake her.Â
âHey,â Lilac said softly. âHey, your bucket listâs calling.âÂ
âTell it to fuck off,â Ashley mumbled.Â
Lilac grinned and shook her shoulder. âWake up, Ash. My back feels like shit - Iâm not spending another night under the boardwalk for you.â Ashley groaned but opened her eyes, stretching her arms above her head before waiting two seconds and promptly falling back on the sand.Â
Finally, Ashley sighed and sat up, rubbing at her eyes, and Lilac turned to watch the sun.Â
It really was quite the sight. Wisps of clouds tugged at the sunâs rays, pulling hues of magenta and orangey gold as the sun made its way to the sky. Seagulls flew above them, looking almost majestic, silhouetted against the sun.Â
âHey, Li?â Ashley said softly.Â
Lilac glanced at her, not one bit sorry to miss the beautiful scene in front of her in exchange for Ashleyâs morning glow, and Ashley gave a little smile that warmed Lilacâs heart more than the sun ever could.Â
âThanks for doing this,â Ashley murmured.Â
Lilac grinned. âItâs my pleasure. I was the one who wanted to come down here, remember?â Ashley gave a half laugh, but Lilac frowned when she saw that the laugh didnât quite reach her eyes.Â
âHey, whatâs wrong?â Lilac asked.Â
Ashley cleared her throat. âThanks for, uh⌠thanks for dealing with me,â she said.Â
Lilac smiled, nudging her foot with her own. âThanks for dealing with me.âÂ
âNo, seriously,â Ashley said. âI know I can be annoying, and youâve⌠Youâve really stuck by me, huh? After all these years?â She bit her lip, looking down as she played with a loose thread on the sweatshirt Lilac had given her the night before when sheâd complained about being cold. âJust⌠thanks for that.â She looked back up, giving a small smile. âYouâre a really good friend, Li.âÂ
Ignoring the twinge that really good friend sent through her heart, Lilac smiled back and said, âSoâre you, Ash. I never would have made it through school without you.â Ashley finally gave a real smile and gave Lilacâs shoulder a gentle push. âBet your ass you wouldnât have!âÂ
Lilac grinned as she rolled her eyes. âStupid of me to think the second of sincerity would last more than a second.â Ashley blinked. âThat was way too haughty a sentence to use casually, dude,â she said after a second, standing up.Â
Taking Ashleyâs hand as she offered it, Lilac stood up too. âHaughty itself is a haughty word, hypocrite,â she told Ashley, and Ashley grinned. âI think the conclusion here is that weâre both haughty.âÂ
âIâll agree to that,â Lilac said, nodding as they walked back towards home. Ashley frowned, biting her lip a bit, and went on, âI mean, obviously youâre just a little more haughty since you started it, but -â
Lilac scoffed. âYouâre haughtier just âcause you said that!âÂ
âWe could do this all day,â Ashley sighed.Â
âYouâre the one who brought it back up!âÂ
âYouâre the one who started it!âÂ
They bickered all the way back home, and fell asleep together in the tree house like theyâd done many times before.Â

The Wedding: A Cherry Tree Extra
~800 words
Read the fic here, and other extras here!Â
Ashley huffed petulantly, crossing her arms over her chest as she paced back and forth outside her brotherâs bedroom door. âI am eight and a half years old,â she said to Lilac for the fourth time that hour. âI should get to go to this wedding too!âÂ
Lilac gave her a sympathetic nod. She understood. They really werenât kids anymore. They were eight whole years old! And Lilac would be nine in just a few short months! That was almost ten! It really didnât make any sense that Connor, Ashleyâs brother, who was only three years older than them, got to go to Ashleyâs auntâs wedding.Â
Connor was getting his big grown up suit fitted in his room, and Ashley had decided that they would wait for him to come out so that they could properly explain why Connor should be staying home and Ashley should be representing the family at the wedding.Â
Lilac was sitting on the time out bench (even though she wasnât in time out) in the hallway as Ashley paced. She was watching her legs swing back and forth, wondering what sheâd have for dinner when she got home, when the door opened and Connor walked out.Â
He was wearing a white button up shirt and a sleek black coat and pants, and he was even wearing a giant blue bow tie. Lilac was in awe. Sheâd never seen a kid her own age wearing such a cool suit.Â
She stood up, almost in awe, and looked up at Ashley and Connorâs mom. âUm, Mrs. Maxwell?â she asked softly as Ashley bickered with her brother. Mrs. Maxwell bent down, tucking a lock of Lilacâs curled hair behind her ear, and said, âWhatâs up, Lilac?âÂ
âCan I - can I please try on a suit?â she asked.Â
Mrs. Maxwell blinked, looking a bit confused, but then nodded. âSure!â she exclaimed with a big smile âConnor here has to go do his homework anyway.â She grabbed Connorâs hand, leading him back into his bedroom, and then sat him down at his desk to do homework while she helped Lilac fit on the suit.Â
Lilac looked in the mirror, smoothing down the front of the coat, and smiled.Â
She loved it! It was too big, but it was amazing. Sheâd never really liked the frilly pink dresses her mom had always dressed her in, but this. This felt⌠this felt right. She didnât even know why, but she liked it! She wanted to dress in suits all the time. Every day of the week. She wondered if her mom had any spare suits in their closet.Â
âWow, Li, you look super cool!â Ashley exclaimed from behind her.Â
Lilac smiled, turning around so that Ashley could see her outfit in all its glory, and Ashley grinned, putting her hands on Lilacâs shoulders. âYou look snazzy,â she giggled. Lilac nodded, glancing in the mirror again. âI do, donât I?â she said softly, adjusting the collar gently.Â
There was a beat of silence, and then Ashleyâs face lit up. She grinned, ignoring Connorâs annoyed shout as she stole a piece of his paper and smothered glue all over it. âThatâs my homework, Ashley!â Connor exclaimed.Â
Ashley ignored him and sprinkled glitter over the numbers.Â
âAshley,â Connor groaned.Â
Glitter rained over the carpet as Ashley shook off the extra sparkles and grabbed scissors. Lilac watched in shock as Ashley cut shape out of the paper, her tongue sticking out over her lip in concentration.Â
âAshley!â Connor whined. âStop ruining all my work with glitter!âÂ
Finally Ashley stopped, looking up at him with a deadpan expression. âThis is serious adult business, Connor,â she said flatly. âYou should be honored weâre using your work.â Connor groaned, storming out of the room. âI hate you,â he mumbled as he brushed past her.Â
âWhat are you doing?â Lilac finally asked, almost afraid of the answer.Â
Ashleyâs smile came back, and she held up the paper. It was covered in blue glitter and cut into the shape of a bowtie, and Ashley looked supremely proud of herself. âItâs perfect!â she declared, and Lilac giggled and nodded along.Â
âPerfect,â Lilac repeated, and Ashley stuck it onto the suit.Â
Ashleyâs mom yelled at them for getting glue all over the suit, and Connor ended up going to the wedding, but the girls didnât mind. Ashley dressed up as a bride, and Lilac dressed up as a groom, and there was a fine coating of blue glitter on the tree house floor for months.Â

This oneâs a bit shorter than the last one haha
Itâs just a bit of insight on Lilacâs backstory... Actually, a bit of insight on her gay awakening, tbh... Anyway, hereâs this, hope you liked it, and we would love you forever and ever if youâd give us some feedback here!Â
Thanks for reading đ
Lilac climbed into the tree house, kicking a cherry pit out of the way before settling onto the wood. Ashley sighed, collapsing all too dramatically onto the floor before resting her head in Lilacâs lap. Lilac smiled, just a bit, more affected by Ashleyâs proximity than she should be, considering the fact that theyâd sat in that exact position for hours on end countless times before.Â
The door swung in the wind, the faint traces of No Boys Allowed!!!!! that had been carved into the wood all those years ago somehow still visible. Lilac gazed out the window, watching the bright lights of the Ferris wheel and amusement parks and basking in the silent glow of the moonlight before the inevitable moment came when Ashley had a thought and broke the peace.Â
That moment came not a second later, when Ashley blurted, âDo you remember that tux you wore to the tenth grade formal?â Lilac groaned, facepalming, and asked, âWhyâd you have to remind me?âÂ
âI donât know what youâre talking about, Lila,â Ashley replied with a grin. âYou rocked that thing.â Lilac sighed. âGod, I was so nervous about that. What a messâŚâ Ashley scoffed, hitting her lightly with the back of her hand. âAnd you call me dramatic.âÂ
âFabulous,â Lilac repeated skeptically. She bit her lip, taking advantage of Ashleyâs gaze out the window to watch her fondly, and murmured, âOh, jeez, what am I gonna do without you?â Ashley groaned, rolling her eyes. âOh, please. Youâre gonna be fine, you big fuckinâ sap!âÂ
âDunno about that, Ash - remember the Tide Pod?âÂ
Ashley scoffed. âThat was once. In, like, fifth grade. And -âÂ
âIt was literally last year,â Lilac interrupted, and Ashley shushed her, waving off her comment and continuing, âThat was once, all the way last year, and besides - other than that, youâre gonna be fine. Right?âÂ
Lilac frowned. âWell -âÂ
âRight,â Ashley cut her off with a grin.Â
There was a beat of silence, and Ashley frowned, looking up to see Lilacâs gaze distant and out the window, her expression just a little less than content. âHey, uh - remember the French Horn Disaster of ninth grade?â Ashley asked in a bit of an attempt to lighten the mood.Â
Her attempt worked, and Lilac grinned. âHow could I forget? There were bubbles everywhere, and halls were sticky for weeks!â Ashley giggled, shaking her head. âGod, that was the worst. I didnât expect them to make us clean it up!âÂ
âWas worth it, though,â Lilac replied with a shrug, âjust to see the look on Schneiderâs face.â Ashley nodded. âMhmm. Priceless. And - and remember what's-his-faceâs reaction to the firecracker last year?âÂ
âOh my God, the firecracker,â Lilac gushed. âI completely forgot about that!â She scoffed, glaring down at Ashley teasingly. âYou know, thatâs the only time I was ever suspended?â she said. âIâd have a clean record if not for you.âÂ
âYouâd be nothing without me, darling,â Ashley told her dramatically before going on normally, âYou know, it is weird how they always give suspension as punishment. Those two weeks off with you were heaven.â She sighed wistfully. âWe shoulda dropped out like I suggested.âÂ
âYeah, well, your fancy college never woulda accepted you if we had,â Lilac said.Â
âWho knows?â Ashley said back. âMaybe Iâm such a catch theyâd have seen my brash courage and begged and begged for me to come.â Lilac raised an eyebrow. âI donât think brash means what you think it means.âÂ
Ashley scoffed. âCheck your facts, Anderson. It means brave.âÂ
âYeah, well, not in a good way.âÂ
âHow is brave not a good thing?âÂ
âMeans arrogant, Ash, and overbearing. And rude.â She grinned. âMaybe it does work there.â Ashley squawked indignantly. âHow dare you!â she exclaimed, grabbing a fallen cherry and chucking it Lilac.Â
Lilac scoffed, grabbing another, and throwing it back, and Ashley laughed, scrambling up to find more ammo. âYouâre ridiculous,â Lilac giggled, dodging a cherry. âYouâre just mad youâre losing!â Ashley exclaimed.
âI am not losing!â Lilac insisted.Â
âSure, sureâŚâÂ
âBut I do have to go ho -âÂ
âYou are mad youâre losing!â Ashley interrupted.Â
âNo!â Lilac laughed, throwing another cherry as she made her way to the ladder. âNo, no, I just - Iâve gotta finish that essay for Emersonâs classâŚâ Ashley gasped. âI forgot about that! Shit, I havenât even started yet.â Lilac scoffed, throwing another cherry, and said, âHe gave it to us, like, last month!âÂ
âShut up,â Ashley giggled, nailing Lilac perfectly on the forehead with a slightly under ripe cherry. âOw!â Lilac exclaimed, throwing it back as she climbed down to the ground. âStart that essay, Ash!â she called as she started walking back to her house.
âYeah, sure, mom!â Ashley yelled.Â
Lilac grinned, taking a deep breath as she turned the corner, and then froze as she remembered their conversation. Youâd be nothing without me, darling⌠Lilac flushed red at the pet name, her mind divided on what was actually going on - 90% of her knew it was just playful, but that other 10% of her was holding out for something⌠anything that could even possibly hint at something more than friendship.Â
Lilac groaned and tried not to think about it.Â
She couldnât bear the thought of ruining a lifelong bond just for a fleeting crush.Â
It would go away.Â
Right?

Chapter two!!!! This oneâs a bit cheesy but uhhhhhh fluff đĽ°Â Anyway, hope you enjoyed! If you wanna be a gem you can reblog and give us some feedback! Weâll see you on Wednesday đđ
âIâm booooored,â Ashley dragged out, throwing another cherry pit at the wall of the tree house. âMe too,â Lilac sighed. She twirled a twig around in her hand, inspecting the leaf on top of it. After another second of silence, she glanced at Ashley and added, âYou know, we could always go inside and finish that ess-âÂ
âNope!â Ashley interrupted. âNope, nope, nope, do not even say the word.âÂ
âYouâre gonna have to do it eventually, AshâŚâÂ
âNot if the world ends before May, I donât.âÂ
Lilac rolled her eyes. âDonât count on it.âÂ
âOkay, you know what?â Ashley said, standing up with a determined look on her face. âWe are going to go out.âÂ
Lilac raised an eyebrow. âGo out where?â Ashley shrugged, patting her pockets for her keys. âDunno. Somewhere.â She frowned, pulling the pockets of her shorts out to look for her keys. âWhereâd IâŚâÂ
âKitchen counter, Ash,â Lilac sighed, standing up and climbing down the ladder.Â
âDamn,â Ashley muttered. âWeâll have to talk to people.âÂ
âItâs just Connor - your momâs out, right?â Lilac asked, and Ashley scowled. âJust Connor,â she echoed, following Lilac through the living room to the kitchen. âJust Connor, just a centipede, just -â She snickered as she saw Connor sitting at the kitchen table. âJust two thousand eight Joe JonasâŚâÂ
âI do not look like Joe Jonas!â Connor groaned, throwing up his hands.Â
âYeah,â Ashley said, mussing his grown out hair, âyou do.âÂ
âHis hair is, like, black!âÂ
âYeah, well, itâs the length that counts.âÂ
âThatâs what she said,â Lilac said under her breath, and Connor grinned. âDamn right!âÂ
âGee, thanks, Li,â Ashley said incredulously.
âCâmon Ash,â Lilac laughed, putting an arm around Ashleyâs shoulders as she led her out of the house and towards her car. âHonestly, sometimes I think you like him more than me,â Ashley mumbled, and Lilac nudged her shoulder. âOnly when youâre indecisive about where weâre going.âÂ
âHmm,â Ashley hummed, turning her key in the engine. âHow about Walmart?âÂ
Lilac raised an eyebrow. â... why?âÂ
âDunno,â Ashley replied with a shrug. âI wanna see a movie and thereâs a - thereâs, like, one of those old fashioned movie box things over there, right?â Lilac frowned. âCanât we just watch Netflix? Do you even have money?âÂ
Ashley grinned, catching her eye in the rearview mirror. âSemantics, darling - letâs just get there, shall we?â Lilac sighed, gazing out the window, and then smiled when Ashley turned up the radio and shouted along with the song playing.Â
They made it to Walmart fairly quickly and wandered around inside the store for a few minutes. âEver seen the Aristocats?â Ashley asked from behind Lilac, and Lilac turned around to see Ashley posing in a mirror with a large, feathery, purple scarf wrapping around her neck.Â
âBetter not die on me, Ash,â Lilac joked, and Ashley sighed wistfully, putting on a fake British accent. âNever, darling, but not for you - I just couldnât bear to leave my sweet little kittens all alone!âÂ
âYou should play her in the live action remake,â Lilac laughed.Â
âJesus,â Ashley said, putting the scarf back on the rack, âthose damn live actions. Like, why do they have to butcher those classic oldies? Canât they just leave them be and make new stories?âÂ
âDisney died, right? Maybe theyâre just not as creative as he was.âÂ
Ashley frowned, feeling the fabrics of the rack of coats they were passing. âOkay, well, he couldnât have made up all of those stories single handedly.â Lilac shrugged, putting her hands up in surrender. âHey, donât ask me - my four am internet spirals consist solely of Napoleon and Casablanca.âÂ
âNapoleon?â Ashley echoed. âIsnât that the three flavored ice cream?âÂ
Lilac grinned. âYeah, sure.â
âWe should watch that movie again,â Ashley mused, stopping by a sun glasses display to fiddle with the various glasses. âWhat, Casablanca?â Lilac asked, and Ashley nodded, trying on a pair of pink, heart shaped sunglasses. âYeah,â she said. âIngrid Bergman can, like, get it.âÂ
Lilac scoffed. âAre you serious?âÂ
Ashley smirked, pushing the pink glasses down her nose slightly to look at Lilac. âAs a heart attack, kid.â Lilac rolled her eyes. âYou just have a thing for Swedes.â Ashley shrugged, exchanging the hearts for neon green aviators. âPerhaps. Tall people are something to be admired.â
Lilac looked down at her feet. What height was considered tall?Â
âHey, think thereâs a back entrance available to the public?â Ashley asked, breaking Lilac out of her thoughts. âOr do we have to break into an employee only areaâŚâ Lilac cleared her throat. âI dunno. But I do know,â she said, slipping the glasses off of Ashleyâs nose, âthat you steal these and weâre both going to jail.âÂ
Ashley raised a brow. âWhoâs to say that wasnât my goal?âÂ
âMe, Ash, I intend to keep my record clean.âÂ
âYou have horrible taste in friends for such a dimwitted goal, Lila.âÂ
Lilac rolled her eyes with a smile, steering Ashley away from the door marked Employees Only at the back of the store and back towards the front entrance. âIâll have you know that my taste in friends is impeccable,â Lilac replied. âYouâre the only exception.âÂ
Ashley giggled, leaning into Lilacâs shoulder. She hummed under her breath, âDarling you⌠are⌠the only exceptionâŚâ Lilac raised an eyebrow. âIs that⌠Paramore?â she asked, and Ashley shrugged.Â
âDunno,â she said absently, pouting when Lilac pulled her away from the sunglasses rack again. They walked through the doors and around the parking lot and finally found the Red Box theyâd been looking for.Â
âOooh, Spies in Disguise!â Ashley squealed, pointing excitedly at the movie on the screen. âThat looks awful, Ash,â Lilac said flatly, and Ashley scoffed. âThatâs Tom Holland youâre disrespecting, Lila, watch yourself!âÂ
âIsnât he the Spiderman guy?âÂ
âYou should see his abs,â Ashley sighed wistfully, putting a hand over her forehead and swooning backwards. Lilac caught her, rolling her eyes, and muttered, âHe looks like heâs eating a frog.â Ashley grinned. âItâs all part of his charm, Lila.âÂ
âCharm or not, weâre not watching Spies in Disguise,â Lilac said conclusively. âHow about The Invisible Man?â Ashley grimaced. âAbsolutely not. Shall we have our horror movie debate again?âÂ
âOkay, how about⌠Dolittle?âÂ
âToo many cute animals,â Ashley sighed. âIâll cry. I wanna comedy. How âbout -âÂ
âDolittle is a comedy!âÂ
âA real comedy!â Ashley exclaimed. âLike Scooby Doo!âÂ
âYouâre just gay for Daphne,â Lilac muttered.Â
Ashley rolled her eyes. âOh, please, you are too - besides, canât be any more disturbing than the cartoon, can it? We can make fun of it and eat popcornâŚâ Lilac heaved a sigh but keyed in the number and paid, making Ashley squeal excitedly and wrap her arms around Lilacâs shoulders in a hug.Â
âThank you, thank you, Lila!â she chirped, but she stayed put even after a few seconds to watch the movie appear out of the slot with her arms still around Lilacâs shoulders. Lilac got the movie and glanced at her after a second, raising an eyebrow and trying not to make it too obvious how much she was dying at their proximity.Â
âGonna move, or am I gonna piggy back you all the way home?â Lilac asked.Â
There was a beat of silence.Â
âWhat if,â Ashley whispered, âwe kissed in front of the Walmart Redbox⌠and we were both girls?â Lilac froze. âUmâŚâ Ashley giggled, pulling away and singing loudly, âI have my dinner in my bathtub, then I go to sex club, la da da da da daâŚâÂ
âWhat the fuck?â Lilac muttered hoarsely.Â
Ashley laughed at Lilacâs startled expression. âItâs a Tik Tok, Li, get with the program!â Lilac laughed wrly, shaking her head. âOf course it is,â she mumbled, getting into the passenger seat of Ashleyâs car.Â
âHey, would you be willing to dress up as a Jonas brother for Halloween?â Ashley asked as they pulled out of the Walmart parking lot. âMy brotherâs already got the hair cut - or lack thereof - and youâre giving me Kevin vibes.âÂ
Lilac frowned. âI donât know whether I should be insulted or flattered.âÂ
âBoth,â Ashley said. âBut maybe itâs just âcause Iâm a NickâŚâÂ

It was a warm summer night, the night after the girlsâ high school graduation, and they were in the tree house, sitting in comfortable silence until Ashley blurted, âWeâve gotta do something wild this summer.âÂ
Lilac raised an eyebrow. âLike what?âÂ
Ashley grinned. âPetty crime.âÂ
Lilac laughed, shaking her head. âThat fancy college of yours can still reject you, you knowâŚâ Ashley pursed her lips. âI dunno about that, Lila. Iâm pretty set. And anyway - weâd only, like, vandalize something or⌠something.âÂ
There was a beat of silence, and then Lilac said, âMaybe we could do something wild, but, uh⌠legal.â Ashley rolled her eyes. âNothingâs wild and legal, Li, thatâs a contradiction at its most basic roots.âÂ
âOh, please,â Lilac laughed. âYouâre too dramatic. We could, like⌠go to the amusement park or something. Or - oh! Does your dad still have the campfire thing? Weâve been meaning to do something with that for ages!â Ashley groaned. âAll thatâs so boring!âÂ
Lilac bit her lip. âWhat about the boardwalk? We havenât been down in months.âÂ
âItâs so far away,â Ashley whined.
Lilac smiled. âItâll be fun, Ash, I promise.âÂ
***
Ashley groaned dramatically as her ring bounced onto a bottle and off again for the sixth time in a row. âThis is rigged,â she grumbled, crossing her arms across her chest petulantly and storming away in a huff.
Lilac shrugged at the guy behind the booth and handed over her ticket. She threw the rings one after another, landing each of them perfectly on the bottle heads. One prize later, Lilac tapped Ashley on the shoulder and handed her a huge pink teddy bear.Â
Ashley squealed, grabbing the bear and wrapping Lilac in a hug.Â
Lilac flushed, hugging her back with a wry smile.Â
âYou must be magic!â Ashley declared, inspecting the teddy bear happily. âGod, I love him!â she exclaimed. âHowâd you even manage to do that game thing? Swear it was rigged, Li, Iâm not that bad at anything.âÂ
Lilac shrugged, throwing her arm around Ashleyâs shoulder as they ambled towards the beach. âWell,â she said, âyou said it yourself.â She grinned down at Ashley and winked. âIâm magic.â
The two strolled down the boardwalk, breathing in the ocean air as they walked against the seemingly endless amount of boards, stretching into the distant sunset. Lilac glanced down, watching Ashley fiddling with her fingers, and debated holding her hand to make her go still before deciding against it and shoving her hands in her pockets.Â
âSo!â Ashley chirped. âHere we are.âÂ
âHere we are,â Lilac echoed, a bit warily.Â
âWhatâs next?âÂ
Lilac hummed, shrugging slightly. âOh! We can go back to your place and light up a fire!âÂ
Ashley raised an eyebrow. âWhile I would not be opposed in the slightest bit to lighting my house on fire,â she said dryly, âthatâs also arson and very much illegal. I somehow doubt thatâs what you mean.âÂ
Lilac rolled her eyes, nudging Ashleyâs shoulder with a smile. âNo, no, I mean, like, a bonfire. Remember? We were gonna use your dadâs old campfire thingy.â Ashley groaned. âThatâs so boring, though!âÂ
Lilac bit her lip and looked at the ground, thinking hard. Then she grinned, pointing down at the boardwalk beneath her feet. âLetâs go underneath the boardwalk! Iâve always wanted to do that!âÂ
Ashley blinked. âThatâs even worse than your last one.âÂ
âWell, what else could we do?â Lilac asked, regretting it immediately.Â
âPetty crime!â Ashley exclaimed with a grin.Â
Lilac sighed, already shaking her head, but Ashley went on excitedly, âCome on, Lila, please? And - and look!â She stopped walking, grabbing Lilacâs hand and sending shivers down her spine, and pointed to a little decal store theyâd so conveniently stopped in front of.Â
âAbsolutely not,â Lilac deadpanned.Â
Ashley pouted. âOh, Li, please? Itâs right there!â She pointed through the glass to an entire aisle full of spray paint. âLook, see all that? Itâs just⌠itâs calling to me, Li! You canât deny it!â She grinned. âMe and that paint? Weâve got chemistry, Lilac. Itâd be crime in itself to keep us separated.â Lilac paused a beat, and then groaned, putting her head in her hands.Â
âI hate you,â she mumbled.
Ashley raised an eyebrow. âIs that a yes?âÂ
âNo,â Lilac replied, peeking through her fingers, âitâs an I hate you.âÂ
Ashley giggled, grabbing her hand, again, and sending shivers through her spine, again, and exclaimed, âThatâs a yes!â as she pulled her into the shop. Lilac rolled her eyes, biting back a smile, and let Ashley lead her through the aisles.Â
âItâs too hot for this,â Lilac grumbled, wincing as a can of spray paint slid from one of her hoodie sleeves and onto the floor with a clang. Ashley giggled, apparently unfazed by the noise, and kicked the paint can in front of her as she replied, âYouâve spent half your life with me, Li - you should be used to the heat by now.âÂ
Lilac rolled her eyes but bit back a smile, which faded away all too quickly as she saw an employee walking through the aisles. âShit,â she whispered, prodding Ashley in a fruitless attempt to make her walk faster.Â
âWeâre gonna get caught,â Lilac hissed as Ashley kept her leisurely pace.Â
âWeâll only get caught if we look suspicious,â Ashley whispered back, walking all too slowly towards the door. Thankfully, as soon as the door swung shut behind them, Ashley grinned and grabbed Lilacâs hand - almost making her drop the paint cans in her sleeve - as she ran around the corner and towards a wall theyâd found a little earlier.Â
It was built of brick, the perfect height, and freshly painted with a coat of white paint. It had been sitting unused for months - it was supposed to be painted soon since the building it was on was supposed to be renovated, but the developers had given up a while back, leaving it open, unused, and - at least in Ashleyâs not so humble opinion - practically begging for vandalization.
âWe have to be good about this,â Lilac panted as soon as they stopped running, a little out of breath. âItâs gonna be here forever, you know? So we have to make sure itâs not something we⌠you know, regret.âÂ
Ashley raised an eyebrow. âLike what?âÂ
âHow about⌠Treat people the way you want to be treated?â Lilac suggested.Â
Ashley shook her head. âToo long.âÂ
âOkay, be nice.â
âThatâs just⌠not even⌠no,â Ashley replied, looking disgusted by the mere idea.Â
Lilac bit her lip. âDo good?âÂ
Ashley sighed. âThese are just horri -â She paused, thinking, and then schooled her expression into something that suggested innocent agreement (which, looking back, Lilac thinks really should have been a red flag). âYeah,â Ashley said cheerfully. âDoâŚâ She cleared her throat. âGood. Do good.âÂ
âPerfect!â Lilac exclaimed, Â
Ashley nodded. âOkay - you right the do part, and Iâll do the, uh - the other part.âÂ
Lilac raised an eyebrow. âYour handwriting sucks. Why do you get the longer word?âÂ
âBecause⌠my handwriting doesnât suck, it has⌠character?â Ashley said hesitantly.Â
âOkay,â Lilac laughed, shaking her head. âYou can do the first part with your very personalitied handwriting, and Iâll do good.â Ashley pouted, giving her puppy dog eyes. âHow âbout because Iâm leaving and I donât want people to forget how I write my gs?âÂ
âOh, fine,â Lilac sighed, shaking her can of paint as Ashley grinned.Â
Lilac wrote out do in her fanciest, most legible, and least identifiable handwriting as carefully as she could. She gave the d a little flourish and connected it just barely to the o, putting all her concentration on making everything perfect.Â
And then she looked up with a smile, satisfied with her work, and stepped back to look at the whole wall⌠Only to find that Ashley hadnât written good. Lilacâs mouth fell open as she looked at Ashleyâs loopy handwriting, covering half the wall in a horrific contrast to Lilacâs careful script, reading something that was most definitely not good or anything else close to it.Â
There, with one word in neat, legible, tediously written, carefully chosen white spray paint and the other scrawled in giant, bold, bright pink paint, the once pristine brick wall now read a scandalizing -Â
DO CRIME.Â
Lilac gasped in horror, convinced her entire future would disappear down the drain once somebody inevitably found the wall and realized it was her, and turned to Ashley with a murderous look on her face.Â
âI am going,â she declared slowly, âto kill you. We could go to jail for up to -âÂ
She stopped as Ashley began to laugh.Â
Ashley laughed, bright and lilting and hard - so hard she put her arms around her stomach because it was physically painful how much her genius stunt had amused her. And Lilac felt herself smile, because this was Ashley, because it really was a genius stunt, because this was Ashley. And maybe, just maybe, it was because she was pitifully in love with this bright, bold, lovely menace to society.Â

And there she is! The first chapter!!!! We hope you enjoyed, and if you wanna be a â¨bright, bold, menace to society⨠give us some feedback! We love hearing from you guys!Â
It was the first day of first grade, and Lilac looked down at her outfit proudly before stepping onto the big yellow school bus. Sheâd picked a baby blue tee adorned with a unicorn, and a skirt covered in way too much glitter. She walked down the corridor, moseying along to the back, and saw a girl of small stature with dirty blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes sulking in her seat.Â
âHey, there,â Lilac said, âcan I sit here?âÂ
âYeah sure!â the other girl replied. âIâm Ashley!â
âLilac Anderson,â Lilac told her, sitting down next to her.Â
Ashleyâs face lit up and she giggled at the whistles that sounded as Lilac talked.Â
âWheredja learn to whistle like that, Lilac?â Ashley asked.Â
Lilac grinned, showing off the gap between her two front teeth. âIâm magic,â she said.Â
Itâs perched in a towering cherry tree, cradled amongst the winding branches and swaddled by thick swatches of leaves, almost hidden from view. The deep brown panels of wood, once shiny and sleek with fresh sealant, are now old and weathered, tinted green with rough patches of moss that grow in the small cracks between floorboards.Â
On the swinging door, No Boys Allowed!!!! is carved crudely into the wood. Leftover spray paint and barely visible ink cover every other wall, reminiscent of reminders and notes of years and years past. A pillowcase flag flies weakly on a crooked pole, baring a sloppy recreation of a majestic, flying phoenix.Â
Fallen movie posters and chipped, broken video game controllers lay forgotten in corners from a time long ago, when the tree house was inhabited not by two young girls, but by rowdy groups of middle school boys.Â
High in the ceiling, on a low hanging rafter, is a name long forgotten, remembered only by school boys now out of college. Fort Maxwell, the carving proclaims, but the once bold declaration is now faded through time.Â
In the slight ocean breeze sways an old wooden swing, hung from rope tied around a strong tree limb the perfect height for swinging in the wind. The rope, fraying from time but still sturdy and secure, is white in color but dotted with cherry juice stains and flecked with dirt and moss.Â
Cherries and leaves lay scattered on floor boards, an odd pit or two rolling from summers and springs full of cherry juice stains and echoing laughter. In through the shuttered windows stretch branches and twigs, their fruit in the perfect location for a sweet summer snack.Â
The tree house looks plain, maybe boring to some, but what it holds inside is anything but. Itâs chock full not only of the sugary scent of the cherries all around, but of unforgettable memories and the promise of a future bright with plenty more to come.
