It was the first day of first grade, and Lilac looked down at her outfit proudly before stepping onto the big yellow school bus. She’d picked a baby blue tee adorned with a unicorn, and a skirt covered in way too much glitter. She walked down the corridor, moseying along to the back, and saw a girl of small stature with dirty blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes sulking in her seat.

“Hey, there,” Lilac said, “can I sit here?”

“Yeah sure!” the other girl replied. “I’m Ashley!”

“Lilac Anderson,” Lilac told her, sitting down next to her.

Ashley’s face lit up and she giggled at the whistles that sounded as Lilac talked.

“Wheredja learn to whistle like that, Lilac?” Ashley asked.

Lilac grinned, showing off the gap between her two front teeth. “I’m magic,” she said.
