you know, that post about saving frame-by-frame screenshots is funny and all until you notice that after they shake hands in moscow and just look at each other intently for several long seconds borgov makes his hand into a fist (practically off screen) like some kind of fitzwilliam darcy

the number of times ive spent looking at this frame by frame because of how [inhales] INTIMATE it is cuz it absolutely feels like they’re in a period piece at a ball about to dance where everyone is watching them (echoed by the handshake at the end when they stand from the board) but

what a delicious and absolutely offscreen 2 second long hand clench, ty marcin for ur choices

In the book, Beth is continually terrified of Borgov’s habitually impassive face and reads a lot of things into it - hostility, arrogance, even brutishness.

The hilarious thing is that Beth, as we all know from the show, also doesn’t use facial expressions very much. Their dynamic is very much,

Borgov: oh thank god someone else who doesn’t emote, I don’t have to put my people face on, I can just be.

Beth: He’s so smug. I hate him. I’m going to rip his throat out. Oh god he’s untouchable, nothing fazes him, I’m going to die.

Borgov: As a sign of respect for her I’m not going to distract her with small talk or try to psych her out. We’re here to focus on chess and only chess and I think that’s beautiful.

Beth: He hates me!!

Borgov: Isn’t it nice when people can understand each other :)

there’s this really small moment when luchenko, borgov, and beth are having tea in moscow where borgov is about to raise his cup but then he waits, and then raises it with beth

can’t in good faith say it’s on purpose at all (since it’s either an accident or an actor choice to try and match up) but—it’s a tiny little kernel of how in sync they are or try to be with each other
