Hello! I have one male veil tail Betta, and I purchased him in a rather bad condition. He's had finrot since I bought him, and it's my intention to nurse him back but this is perhaps the most unusual case I have ever combatted. I'd like your opinion. He is currently in a hospital tank, water changes daily, light and food are monitored. When I got him, he had almost no caudal fin. It has fully regrown, as well as his dorsal and anal fins almost doubling in length. However.....
.... He has relapsed since, and it would seem that nothing can balance things out. I've been treating him with teaspoons of aquarium salt, which has little to no effect. After that failed, I moved to medicating the water, and this too seems to be useless. After so much constant water change, I decided to give him a break and let him fight it out for a few days. This seemed to work, but the trouble is, he seems only to get better for as long as I refrain from water changes.....
... When I change the water again, deterioration resumes. How can I encourage regrowth without introducing ammonia buildup? I'm lost here.
Gosh, I'm really not sure what this could be! Have you ruled out tailbiting as a potential cause? Bettas can be pretty notorious for that. If so, have you checked your pH? It could be that you have hard water that is taking a toll on his fins- if that's the case something like Indian Almond Leaf (or its extract, sometimes available as Atison's betta SPA) could help to soften the water and make things easier for the little guy. I wouldn't keep medicating the water if I were you, or at least not with any harsher medications, because meds can be pretty stressful for a little fish. I'm sorry I can't be of more help!
