Colours Born in Italy

Given the artistic heritage that Italy has, Italian references have always been very present when naming colours.

Some time ago I made a post about Colours in Italy and their use, today I will make a list of colours that take their names from Italian places and people:

🖌 Terra di Siena, called Sienna in English, is a kind of brown. It takes its name from Siena, where it was produced during the Renaissance;

🖌 Giallo Napoli, called Naples Yellow in English, can range to a reddish yellow to a bright light yellow;

🖌 Rosso Venezia, literally “Venice red”, known since ancient times in Veneto;

🖌 Rosso Pompeiano, which is “Pompeiian Red” and is also known as Rosso di Pozzuoli, was largely used in Ancient Rome. You can still see it inside the villas in the Archaeological Area of Pompeii;

🖌 Verde Paolo Veronese, which is Paolo Veronese Green, is a variation of viridian. It was a colour formulated and used by 16th century artist Paolo Veronese;

🖌 Bruno di Firenze, which is Florence Brown, is used only in oil painting and seems to be quite toxic;

🖌 Terra di Vicenza, translated as Vicenza Earth in English, is a buff or tan coloured kaolin used since Medieval times.

Ok so, I finally found the time to look up some italian grammar books, it wasn’t easy to find sites that didn’t require registration, but I managed to find some pretty good things.

Grammar books you can download: La lingua italiana per stranieri Grammatica essenziale della lingua italiana con esercizi Grammatica italiana in rapidi schemi Facile facile A0 Facile facile A1 Grammatica italiana (this is a bit of an older book, but since it’s around 300 pages I tought it might still be useful)

A site I found from which you can listen to news in slow italian based on your level: 1

I decided to create this cheat sheet on Italian verbs because the most difficult part of learning romance languages for me has always been all the verb forms and conjugations. The idea (and format!) was inspired by @studypuddles’ post on French verbs, which you can find here.

I combed through for spelling errors & mistakes, but alas some do fall through the cracks, so let me know if you see anything!

I’m supposed to be focusing on my Spanish and Catalan studies at the moment, however today I just really needed to hear some Italian. 

I really like Lucrezia’s videos for when I’m not in the mood to use grammar textbooks because she explains things clearly (in Italian and English), the videos are subtitled, she provides relevant example sentences and the content is very useful for a variety of different situations.
