Mel has a very limited circle of people she trusts, and an even smaller group of people she’s taken the trouble to label as friends (-> Typically, Blue earned the title because he insisted on it so much).

She’s the kind of person who grew up without close relatives and who, as an adult, has surrounded herself with people she considers colleagues, acquaintances, superiors, drinking buddies, and so on.

She doesn’t feel a strong need to keep her friends around at all time, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t appreciate the sense of camaraderie they provide, even when they're away! If she ever returns home, you can be sure she'll cherish the memory of the people she met there.
