"All fiction is derivative in some capacity."
Well yeah but if you're making "this book started out as a fanfic" a selling point of a mainstream published book--and I'm saying this as a fanfic writer myself--that doesn't inspire confidence.
"But I've read fanfics that are better than published books."
Me too! But I would argue that a fanfic loses a lot of its soul, its seasoning when it gets poached for mainstream publishing. It's like treating the live-action remake as 'legitimizing' an animated film when the reality is that it's a soulless cash-grab in a creatively bankrupt capitalist market.
I'm not saying a fanfic writer can't go on to enjoy success in mainstream publishing, in fact, I genuinely hope that fanfic writers can break into that market with their own original works (Hello, Homestuck DNA in the Locked Tomb series...), but I do worry about the precedent set by fanfics "breaking containment" and getting picked up by mainstream publishers.
The whole point of fanfic and its legal protections is that writers are writing it for love of the game--sure, some writers are working on building up an audience, building up their craft, and there's nothing wrong with fanfic communities being a sort of writing nursery where writers can build themselves up before jumping into original fiction, but it's also like... fanfic has a point on its own. It has a purpose as transformative fandom. It has a point in subverting and exploring the text and subtext of the media it portrays from various interpretations. If we start treating it as a rough draft for original fiction and not something in conversation with both a community and a preexisting media... something gets lost on all sides when the serial numbers get filed off.
I mean there's probably more nuance that will bleed into "Everyone can do what they want forever"-- I mean Japan has a lot of fanworks in its doujinishi market after all---but I dunno. Fanfiction communities time and again want to have their cake and eat it, too, and I worry that's going to continue biting us in the ass and keeping us on the margins.
you people can't even boycott chick-fil-a.
current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.
someone brought a cake analysis robot to feed the cake into to determine the exact ingredients and supposedly it can spit out the exact same cake. and if you're like dude. what. then they're like well if it bothers you you should have made more cake. i'm hungry and i deserve cake. and you're like dude we're at a party.
Three months later you find out that fifty people locked themselves in a room to discuss how much they loved your cake and how they wished you made more. None of them ever told you.
so for the love of god. please tell people you liked their cake and don’t feel embarrassed about it. because then they will make more cake.
I'm seeing a lot of Judy slander online and I just wanna say this: if the genders were reversed everyone would praise male!Judy's determination and moral obligation in solving the case to high heavens while calling female!Nick a selfish and self-centered ***** in the same breath.
every day this site feels more and more hostile to be on as a racialized person
this used to be a place where I talked about my interests. I used to blog about the tv shows and books and video games I liked alongside my politics. But now it feels like 90% of what I post is about racism because this site is so fucking racist and so overwhelmingly white that I’ve had to become primarily a political blog out of necessity. I’ve seen the same thing happen to countless Black and Brown ppl I’ve followed over the years and it makes me sick to think about. not because I don’t want to speak about political/social issues or because I don’t think it’s important to do so; if I had a choice in the matter this would still be an overtly political blog and I would still be speaking out about the issues that matter to me. But so many white users are out here posting exclusively about fandom or art or music or photography or whatever else they’re passionate about, whereas if you’re openly Black or Brown on the internet you literally do not get that option because you will inevitably get swathes of white people coming to you and demanding you justify your existence to them. And I think that sucks
While this post is primarily about racism I’ve seen this happen time and time again to trans women as well, racialized or otherwise. I have transfem friends and mutuals I met in fan spaces as a teenager who now post primarily about transmisogyny, because it’s just so incredibly pervasive that they’re forced to spend basically all of their time on the internet advocating for their right to exist as trans women instead of having fun engaging with the things they love
sometimes when I’m being especially self deprecating and convinced no one likes me I have to tell myself “you’re being goob. you are being goob right now”
people who don't experience hyperfixation don't know what it feels like to hyperfixate so much on something that it becomes not only your subject of obsession but also your source of happiness and literally the main reason why you still keep going; literal source of strength and life.
shoutout to my favorite fictional characters, favorite people, favorite ships, favorite movies, favorite tv shows, fanfics and archive of our own
too many of you are embarrassed by what's in your top artists or songs or albums. embrace. or like don't post, I'm sick of seeing people being like omg I don't understand how [mainstream popular song] is so high. buddy you're the one who listened to it. I embrace every cringe song on my top 100 songs

thinking about how ursula k leguin said "what goes too long unchanged destroys itself. The forest is forever because it dies and dies and so lives" and how everyday i wake up slightly different and i can feel myself shed the skin of who i used to be slowly, slowly, until i look back and can scarcely recognise who i was... but also she is still a part of me, part of the leaf litter and the humus, supporting me as i send new roots down and new leaves stretching up to the sunlight
“I know that if women wish to escape the stigma of husband-seeking, they must act and look like marble or clay - cold, expressionless, bloodless; for every appearance of feeling, of joy, sorrow, friendliness, antipathy, admiration, disgust, are alike construed by the world into the attempt to hook a husband. Never mind! well-meaning women have their own consciences to comfort them after all. Do not, therefore, be too much afraid of showing yourself as you are, affectionate and good-heartened; do not too harshly repress sentiments and feelings excellent in themselves, because you fear that some puppy may fancy that you are letting them come out to fascinate him; do not condemn yourself to live only by halves, because if you showed too much animation some pragmatical thing in breeches might take it into his pate to imagine that you designed to dedicate your life to his inanity.”
— Charlotte Brontë writing to a friend who had been kind to a man she thought was married, only to have him fall in love with her because he thought she was flirting (letter dated April 2, 1845).

This would have had me crucified on tumblr 10 years ago but maybe we are ready for this conversation now:
If you are a socially anxious person, you have to socialize. Your panic/anxiety attacks will only get worse and trigger more frequently if you constantly avoid contact with The Public. Not saying that you need to be a social butterfly- but there is a genuine problem with not being able to order your own meal at a restaurant. And it cannot be solved by always having someone else do it for you.
This is a PSA to about 3/4s of the Portland Youth populace
everyone who reblogs this and is like "I ordered my own tea this week" or "I only barfed once when I had to give a presentation'- you are doing amazing sweetie. Have patience with yourself, you are relearning a skill so difficult that people get 4 year degrees to do it professionally.
