Chapter 1 |
What was meant to be a one-night escape turns into something far more complicated when a single night with Quaritch refuses to stay in the past. Lingering glances, unspoken emotions, and the weight of everything left unsaid blur the line between regret and longing. When a sudden accident forces them back into each other’s orbit, both are faced with a choice: keep pretending it meant nothing, or finally confront the feelings neither of them planned to have.
Summary: A newly graduated zoologist arrives on Pandora, ready to begin the career she’s worked her entire life for. But the beauty of the moon comes with sharp warnings, deadly rules, and a safety briefing that makes one thing painfully clear: Pandora does not forgive mistakes. As Lexi steps into her new life, she comes face to face with the dangers of the world she’s chosen
Warnings: explicit smut, p in v, sexual tension, teasing, flirting, creampie, age difference, alien biology
A new scientist arrived on Pandora with one goal: to study the biology of its most dangerous and breathtaking creatures.
Her name was Lexi, a newly graduated zoologist who had been offered a ten-year contract on Pandora—an opportunity that would define the beginning of her career. Direhorses, fan lizards, forest banshees, hammerhead titanothere, viperwolves, even thanators—species most only ever saw in footage would become her life’s work. She boarded the transport ship the day after graduation, excitement and fear tangled tightly in her chest, before being placed into cryo-sleep for the five-year journey.
She woke violently.
The ship’s landing sent a sudden jolt through her entire body, dragging her from the depths of cryo. Every nerve screamed as sensation returned—slow, painful, unfamiliar. Her limbs felt heavy, numb, as if they didn’t quite belong to her yet, muscles struggling to wake after five long years of stillness.
Soon, the scientists were instructed to put on the masks provided to them. Pandora’s air was beautiful—but toxic to humans. Lexi secured the mask over her face, drawing in her first filtered breath just as the ship doors hissed open.
The world beyond was green, alive, overwhelming.
They were escorted out in single file, boots hitting metal in dull, echoing steps, until the base headquarters came into view—cold, industrial, and stark against the living jungle that pressed in from all sides.
Pandora had finally claimed her, and it was beautiful.
Lexi barely had time to process where she was before they were ushered into a large briefing room near the heart of the base.
Rows of metal chairs filled the space, most already occupied by scientists, engineers, and medical staff fresh from cryo. The hum of machinery vibrated through the floor beneath her boots, a constant reminder that everything keeping them alive here was manufactured. Lexi took a seat near the middle, setting her pack at her feet and adjusting her mask as she scanned the room.
The lights dimmed.
Then the door at the front of the room slid open.
Conversation died instantly.
He was Na’vi—there was no mistaking that. Towering, broad-shouldered, blue skin marked with darker striping. A long tail moved lazily behind him as he stepped into the room, armored vest strapped tightly across his chest, dog tags resting against his collarbone. His queue was bound neatly behind his head, braids tight and deliberate. Every movement was controlled. Military.
Recombinant.
Lexi’s breath caught.
She’d studied avatar physiology. Knew the proportions, the adaptations, the biomechanics. But seeing one in person—this one—was something else entirely. He didn’t feel like a bridge between species. He felt like a weapon given a new body.
Colonel Miles Quaritch stopped at the front of the room and surveyed them with sharp, yellow eyes. The silence stretched until it was almost uncomfortable.
“Welcome to Pandora,” he said, his voice deep and unmistakably human despite the fangs visible when he spoke. “You made it through the trip. That’s the easy part.”
A holographic display flickered to life behind him, illuminating the room in pale blue light.
“Pandora is not your friend,” Quaritch continued. “The atmosphere is toxic. The terrain is hostile. And everything that moves outside this base would be happy to turn you into a cautionary tale.”
Images rotated across the screen—direhorses, fan lizards, viperwolves. Lexi leaned forward despite herself, instincts warring between fear and fascination.
“Observe from a distance,” he said. “You are here to study, not to prove anything.”
The display shifted.
A thanator filled the screen.
Several people stiffened.
“These,” Quaritch said evenly, “are apex predators. Faster than you. Smarter than you. If you see one in the wild and think you have time to react—you’re already dead.”
Lexi swallowed, pen hovering uselessly over her page.
Quaritch paced slowly as he spoke, tail swaying with each measured step. “You do not leave the wire without authorization. You do not approach wildlife without a secured perimeter. And if you ignore protocol—” His gaze swept the room, briefly locking with Lexi’s. “—my men will not risk their lives to save yours.”
No humor. No exaggeration.
Just fact.
He stopped at the center of the room. “Pandora doesn’t care about your degrees, your research grants, or your curiosity. Respect it, and you might live long enough to finish your contract.”
The screen went dark.
“That’s all,” he said. “Dismissed.”
The room exhaled as one.
Lexi remained seated for a moment longer, heart pounding. She’d come here to study predators.
She hadn’t expected to meet the most dangerous one first.
the room slowly emptied as personnel were divided and assigned escorts. Lexi was paired with a young technician who led her through the winding corridors of the base toward her assigned quarters.
Her room was small but functional—metal walls, a narrow bed, a desk bolted to the floor, and a single locker for her belongings. She set her duffel down, removing her gloves and mask for the first time since arrival. The recycled air felt stale compared to the jungle outside, but it was safe.
For now.
She barely had time to settle before she was escorted again—this time to the science wing.
The lab was massive, humming with activity. Screens glowed with live data feeds, specimen tanks lined the walls, and scientists moved with purpose between workstations. The air buzzed with excitement, fear, and discovery all at once.
“This’ll be your primary workspace,” her escort explained, gesturing around. “Zoology division. Field research, biological analysis, behavioral studies.”
Lexi’s heart raced.
This was it. The beginning of everything she’d worked for.

Adeline's POV
Lenora Hills University looked exactly how it felt, like a place where ambition came to die. Posters peeled from the walls in surrender, and the lecturers sounded like they were counting the days until retirement. It had the sterile, fluorescent-lit apathy of a place that expected nothing from you, and gave even less in return.
Except, apparently, for soul-crushing group projects.
I slipped into my usual seat at the back of the lecture hall just before the start, dragging my hoodie sleeves over my hands. Mia, my practical partner slash the only person here who talked to me without obligation, raised an eyebrow as I dropped into the chair.
"You look like you've been through war."
"Toast was dry," I said flatly.
She snorted. "Tragic."
Before I could reply, Mr. Callahan launched into a lecture about chemical bonds with all the enthusiasm of someone explaining paint drying. His voice became background noise almost immediately.
My mind wandered, like it always did lately, back to Hawkins. To Hopper. To the last thing he said to me before he-
Stop.
I squeezed my eyes shut. Even now, I could still hear his voice, that low rasp, all bark but secretly soft beneath. The way he always acted like he didn't give a damn, when really, he cared harder than anyone I'd ever known.
The bell broke through my thoughts like a slap.
Mia leaned over, nudging me. "Meet-up after school still on?"
"Yeah," I said, exhaling. "Let's just try not to strangle each other this time."
Later
Lunch was worse.
I sat at the edge of a half-empty table, poking at a slice of cafeteria pizza that could've doubled as a Hockey puck. People laughed, passed notes, complained about classes. I tried to blend in, to pretend I cared.
But the truth was, I felt like a ghost.
Half here, half somewhere else. Somewhere with snow and blood and the sound of gates opening.
By the time my last lecture ended, I was practically out the door before the professor stopped talking. I wanted nothing more than to get home, kick off my boots, and stop thinking, about school, Hawkins, or how every time I closed my eyes, it felt like Hopper was still trying to talk to me.
Back at the house
The door clicked behind me, and I tossed my bag down like it weighed a hundred pounds. The kitchen light buzzed faintly overhead. I made a beeline for the fridge, stomach grumbling.
And then I saw it.
A small box on the counter. Brown cardboard. No return address. Just Joyce Byers scrawled in faded black ink.
I frowned. She hadn't mentioned expecting anything.
Curious, I peeled back the flaps.
Inside was a single object, a wooden Russian nesting doll. The paint was worn at the edges, but the face was delicate. Almost mournful. My stomach twisted.
This didn't feel like some Etsy impulse buy.
I turned it over in my hands, examining the cracks in the lacquered paint, the faint floral details on the scarf tied around the doll's head.
Just then, the front door creaked open again. Footsteps.
Joyce appeared in the doorway, juggling her keys and a grocery bag. She spotted what I was holding, and froze.
"Where did you find that?" Her voice was sharp.
"It was just... here," I said. "Did someone send it to you?"
She moved too quickly. The bag thunked onto the counter. A jar clinked dangerously, but she didn't flinch.
"Probably junk," she said, voice too casual. "You know how those weird mail scams work. I'll toss it."
I stared at her. "Joyce."
She smiled, or tried to. But it didn't reach her eyes. Not even close.
"It's nothing, Adeline. Really."
But I'd lived with her long enough to know the difference between nothing and oh god, what now.
She reached out slowly and took the doll from my hands. Her fingers lingered a moment too long on the smooth wood, like she was remembering something. Or someone.
"I'll handle it," she said softly.
I nodded. But something had already settled in my chest, cold and tight.
Because Joyce Byers wasn't the type to scare easily.

Adeline POV
I rolled out of bed at the ungodly hour that was 6 am, the floor cold as my feet touched it. I groaned, dragging my blanket with me for a moment before letting it fall to the floor.
'One more day until the holidays,' I reminded myself, like a battle cry for Uni students, too emotionally drained to care anymore.
Down the hall, I heard chaos: Will yelling something about glue, El asking for help, Joyce calling out for someone to grab their lunch boxes. Typical morning.
I rubbed my face, then grabbed the nearest semi-clean jeans and a wrinkled band tee that had been living on my floor for about a week. The shirt smelled like dryer sheets and sleep. Good enough.
Downstairs, the smell of toast and burnt coffee filled the kitchen. Joyce was already at her desk, half-dressed, hair in a messy bun, glasses on her nose. She was muttering to herself while typing furiously. She said she liked working from home. Said it gave her "freedom." But most mornings, she looked one minor inconvenience away from throwing the entire computer out the window.
"Morning," I said, snagging a piece of toast.
"Morning, honey," she replied, barely glancing up. Then, "Is that the same shirt from Tuesday?"
"Define 'same'," I replied, heading for the door.
The sharp honk of a van outside cut through the house. Argyle. Right on time.
I swiped a banana and threw on my backpack just as Jonathan ambled in, still half-asleep, his eyes bloodshot. He blinked at me, then reached for the coffee pot. "You good?"
"As good as anyone forced to do a group presentation at 8 a.m."
He grunted in sympathy.
Outside, Argyle leaned out the driver's window, a wide grin on his face. "Rise and shine, brochacha! You ready to taste freedom?"
I high-fived him as I hopped in. The van smelled like weed, pine air freshener, and whatever pizza he'd eaten last night. El and Will climbed in next, carefully balancing their school projects like precious cargo.
"Hold on to your butts!" Argyle shouted as the van lurched forward, tires squealing just a bit too much for suburban comfort.
I leaned my head against the window and watched the beige houses roll by. This place was so... average. Neat lawns. American flags. Nothing like Hawkins. Hawkins had secrets. Had soul. Had danger lurking in the woods and something unspoken in the air.
Lenora Hills just had sun.
After Jim died, I didn't have anyone left. My mom had taken off years ago, and my dad... well, Jim was the one who showed up at school events, who taught me how to fight back without getting suspended, who called me "Addie" in a way that made me feel safe. When the news came, when I was told he was gone... it was like someone hit pause on my life. And never hit play again.
Joyce didn't have to offer me a place. But she did. No hesitation. Just... kindness. I hated that I couldn't love this place the way she wanted me to. I glanced toward the front. El was staring at her hands, quiet as always. Will was fiddling with his drawing pad. Jonathan had slumped sideways against the window, probably already asleep.
I turned my gaze back outside.
One more day until the holidays.
But something in my chest said the break wouldn't be peaceful.
