Diana’s eyes were as wide as her grin as she rifled through some of the DVDs on the shelf. So many things were aging her considerably by now, but she’d slowly begun to embrace it. This extended to little habits, like her insistence to own beloved films on DVD if she could. There was a fondness for physical media that she knew she’d always have. 

She’d become so ensnared with the titles on the shelf that she didn’t realize she had gotten close to someone until their shoulders bumped. “Oh!” Diana chirped, jumping back a little, her doe eyes turning to the other, “I am so so sorry. I think I was just so lost in my browsing that I just kinda forgot my surroundings.”

“Oh, nothing to worry about, darling. It happens,” the shapeshifter assured, turning slightly to glance at the woman who had bumped into her and offering a polite smile. The shop itself wasn’t one she had a tendency to frequent in town, only really going in there when she had to do some birthday shopping for someone back home. On that particular day she was looking for something for one of her cousin’s son who had a birthday coming up. She hadn’t yet met the child in person, having moved to the States before the boy was even born but she had spoken to him on video chats like she had done with most of her family throughout the years. And she always sent him gifts.

“Are you looking for something in particular?” Bex questioned, glancing briefly towards the shelf that the other woman had been glancing at though not looking too closely at it as to not be too invasive. Curiosity, however, was in her nature and she wouldn’t deny she had a hard time keeping herself from questioning things. It was just a part of who she was.

It was odd, she knew, that she’d come to town to find Salim, and yet was ducking around corners to avoid him. But Elle wasn’t yet ready to face him. Not today, not in the middle of the street. She didn’t know when the right time would be, or when she’d feel confident enough to face him, but it wasn’t right now. The brunette wrapped arms around herself, nodding at the taller woman’s comment about small towns. Considering Elle had spent much of the last few years in big cities, hiding in the anonymity of the thousands of people, so this was indeed a big change. “Hard to stay to the outskirts when you’re not self-sufficient.” But for the moment, Elle was living from paycheck to paycheck, and buying things day by day. Which meant needing to be close to town.

Bex shrugged her shoulders slightly in a way that indicated that fact was fair enough. She couldn’t imagine it would be easy to keep yourself going when you didn’t have a way to be self-sufficient and yet at the same time she didn’t imagine many people would be considered self-sufficient in the modern age. Except for perhaps some of the people who had farms on the outskirts of town. She could imagine that they needed to go into town far less than the regular every day citizens of Wolford. She definitely wasn’t one of those people. Her work was right in the heart of town- and nearly everyone she knew lived in the heart of town as well. Staying out the outskirts wouldn’t have done anything for her. She would just have to travel into town basically on a daily basis anyway. Though living closer to the woods definitely would have come in handy when it came to her running around in her animal form. “Most of the people who are self-sufficient are the ones who run the farms on the outskirts of town. The rest of us all live in the town itself. It makes getting what we need easier.”

  “do you? don’t tell me you’re a kid whisperer – like how they have horse or dog whisperers?” he smirked a bit. of course it was intimidating being around another shifter, sals family was very secluded when it came to the topic; no extended family nor friends to relate to. then when he met maras mother he seemed to have discovered a newer world but it didn’t do much for his comfortability. bex probably has found a natural vibe among their kind and even normal people, it’s maybe when mara floated to the woman. she liked the energy the older one gave off. “i honestly hope nothing is thrown at her… ever, unless it’s a ball in a sport.” sal couldn’t help the small bit of laughter that came out with his joke, he wasn’t ready for mara to come home crying because of a partner or friends. life shouldn’t be hard when they were this far advanced. “i suppose i can’t deny that no – but enough about this side of the counter. what’ve you been up too?”

“Oh, hardly,” the shapeshifter replied with a laugh, shaking her head slightly, amused at the very idea of anything of the sort. “I don’t spend as much time around children as most people. My cousins have kids but they live back in England so I don’t really spend time around them. The most I do is chat with them in video chats and send them birthday gifts. Just call it intuition though, darling. Your daughter has a way about her. And she’s definitely got being friendly down to a science.” She had never met a child quite as accepting as Mara seemed to be. She didn’t think the girl was blindly accepting though. She seemed to simply just know who was good for her to spend time with, who she could trust. The girl had really good instincts. “Oh, nothing much new on my end, darling. Mostly work, spending time with the local police officers from time to time. I swing in to visit, much to the chagrin of Detective Loscher.” The corners of her mouth turned up slightly in amusement at the fact that Victor had an issue with her coming around. She was far too accustomed to it by then and she had never let it bother her. “And you? Aside from father duty how are things going with you?”

“I get that, my mom wanted me home a lot while I was overseas.  I think it is just the maternal thing.”  For Grayson, he just couldn’t.  He tried to remain in touch through other means, but when you’re over there in the sandbox it was hard, because what do you even say to your loved ones?  “I suppose that is true, I grew up with a powerful mother and a sister that probably can kick a lot of boy’s butts.  So I guess I never got like that, but then I tend to be protective over women so maybe I am.  I have no clue.  Hopefully I am not offending anyone.”  He said with a shrug.  Sometimes it was hard to know what was right and wrong when it came to such things.  “Yeah, I actually get that, but I am glad you never do any lasting damage.”  Unfortunately Grayson could not say the same for his time in the war.

“Oh, I’m sure mothers just want their children by their side. Its mostly because they get far too worried about their kids even if they’re adults and able to take care of themselves. It just seems natural, that a mother worries about their children for their entire life. It all comes from a place of love so I guess we all just have to accept that about our mothers.” While Bex had no desire to return to England she could also understand why her mother worried about her. Her oldest child had left the country years before and had never returned home. Yes, she kept in contact and yes, her parents were all too aware that the shapeshifter was more than capable of looking out for herself. But that didn’t stop Mama Archambeau from worrying. And sometimes she had to admit that it was nice to know that the woman still cared about her safety so much. “As much as people don’t want to think that their sister or daughter could possibly ever need to take care of themselves or need to defend themselves I think we all naturally hope the people we care about can do that if the need arises. Your mother probably has to be tough given her being in charge of a coven. And your sister has four brothers. It makes sense she would have become tough and learned to take care of herself. Must be a bit of a relief though to know she can take care of herself. It would mean you get to worry a little less about her, I’d assume.” Bex took a sip of her drink, shrugging very slightly. “Well, I have to be on the careful side anyway. Most of the world doesn’t know my kind exist yet and if I use too much force? Hard to keep it a secret,” the brunette teased.

“Perhaps, although I didn’t know the Irish and French had any issues with one another.  I thought we could all agree we’re against the English.”  He joked back with the other woman.  “Thanks, hopefully you’re enjoying yourself too.  It is a nice event.”  Even though Cassidy harbored a lot of resentment towards his father for never including him on things with it, he decided to let it go for the children to have fun and not make it about himself.

Cassidy softly smiled seeing his little girl show off a bit, all proud of her face and of course her new stuffed animal.  The little one nodded at the woman at the mention of gratitude for the bear.  And then shook her head when asked if the bear had a name.  “Not yet, I haven’t chosen a name.  What do you think?”

“I think it might be a little difficult for me to be against the English when I was raised in England,” Bex teased though she was all too aware how many people historically in both Ireland and France had an issue with the British as a whole. Not that for the most part her country didn’t earn the ire of people in the past. They weren’t always known for being kind to the people of Ireland, after all. “Oh, no, the town definitely goes all out. It’s nice to see the town all come together for this.” Though she had to admit- for a small town they did seem to enjoy their celebrations.

“Hmm.” Bex tapped one finger to her lips in thought as she thought about the question the little girl posed about her bear. “Well, it’s a St. Patrick’s Day bear so that must mean it’s Irish, doesn’t it?” the shapeshifter mused. “So it should probably be a good Irish name, don’t you think? But the big question is if your bear is a boy or a girl. That will help with picking a name.”

She did have a point but it was a point he was still not fully prepared to admit, he trusted her, but with all the red flags, his past traumas, and his fears, he did trust her, but it was not something he was prepared to admit so openly, especially not to her, not yet at least. “Stealing would require me to leave this place, and that isn’t in my plans?” He could feel how much heat her body usually irradiate, it was a part of her nature but lately, he seemed to be driven to more, but he couldn’t explain the why.

He got closer to her to know exactly just how much Bex enjoyed flirting and teasing him over and over again, but they were both very dominant and completive into who made the other fall for it first, even though he was already deciding that he was more interested in kissing her than win their teasing competition. “Perhaps you are right, there’s something very relaxing and almost intoxicating about a big cat purring and I just enjoy doing it so much…” He started to play her game and gently touch her in her weak spots.

“But you will leave at some point, cheri. And it seems to me that when you do? One day you will spirit Toulouse away with you.” It was funny to think how several months ago Victor wouldn’t have been caught dead in her home let alone around her teasing him the way she was. It was clear to everyone that met him that he was guarded- you could spot that from a mile away. And yet it seemed worse with her- and perhaps with Tony. Once she had even gone so far as to ask Jez if she knew why her partner acted the way he did and the witch simply replied that it wasn’t her place to say but not to think badly of Victor because of it- whatever that meant. And yet, there they were, the push and pull between them so second nature already that one would think he never glowered at her presence. Though to be fair, he glowered around most people.

“Someone things mighty highly of themselves,” Bex mused, her nail still pressed against his bottom lip. She pressed harder, not enough to draw blood but at that delicate precipice where should she add just the tiniest bit more to it she would split his lip open; enough pressure to sting and yet she was all too aware he wouldn’t flinch away. That wasn’t the goal anyway. The truth simply was for as cautious as she could be with her strength around him? She was still a predatory creature to her core. And one who loved to play games. “Arrogance isn’t a virtue, darling.”

“Well I do believe that gives you an excuse not to see them given the geography.”  Grayson could believe she had people underestimate her.  Not everyone knew about shifters for one, but it was more than that.  A lot of men underestimate women, but he knew Bex could handle herself.  “Some men can be hard headed,” he simply responded, not wanting to be rude to anyone.  “Oh, I am sure they are surprised.  Hopefully you don’t hurt them too badly,” he chuckled.

“Oh, I don’t know if my mum would agree to that one. She would probably love if I hopped onto a plane and flew home frequently.” She didn’t do that, of course. As a matter-of-fact she hadn’t traveled home at all since moving to the States and had no plans to do so in the future. Not because she hadn’t wanted to see her family but because she couldn’t imagine herself back there. As strange as it seemed, Wolford had become her home. Why would she want to go backwards in any way? “Hard-headed isn’t necessarily what I would say. It is more that men think women are weak. Even if they knew the women are supernatural they tend to think of them as weaker. Not all men, of course. Many of them are smart enough to know that some women can be just as dangerous as men if not more so.” At first the shapeshifter didn’t respond as to the question of whether she hurt them too badly. Instead she simply smiled and took a sip of her drink and then after a moment she shrugged just slightly. “Try not to. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get the job done. Never any lasting damage is done though.”

“Doesn’t seem too different from a big city to be honest,” Theo said. When he was in New York, everyone found a reason to go out and have a drink or a party. If it was a good day, it was a way to keep the good energy going. If it was a bad day, it was a way to boost morale. If it was a medium day, a celebration could spice things up a bit. When Theo was younger, he was certainly no stranger to partying and celebrating. He didn’t need a reason other than just being alive. He supposed that today was no different. He was alive and he was surviving on what he had. He had his niece and she was doing well. Every day that she was doing well was reason enough to celebrate. “I can only imagine how fast news gets around a small town, especially if the citizens are just waiting for something to happen.” He put on a small smile and took a sip of his drink. “So you’re not celebrating anything specifically?”

“Oh, word gets around here faster than you can blink, darling. Sometimes it seems people around here know things about you before you know them.” Bex was teasing, of course, but sometimes it seemed like that was true. Keeping secrets in that town was rather difficult on good days, damn near impossible on the bad ones. How she managed to keep so much about her personal life a secret after all that time was beyond her. She had simply been lucky in that regard, she assumed. Or perhaps it was simply that people didn’t care about her business enough to talk about her and try to father their secrets. “Maybe I’m more accustomed to quiet towns and cities. Except for London- but usually my friends and I only celebrated the big things back home there.” Or maybe it was that she only celebrated the big things with her friends because she was too busy wanting to leave to worry about the smaller things in life. There seemed to be little point in doing so when one wouldn’t be around for much longer. “No, not celebrating anything specific,” she confirmed with a slight smile. “But if you think there should be something to celebrate…how about a peaceful town and good company,” she suggested, lifting her glass.

 “excitement from work is only one kind, don’t you know there’s a million more forms of it out there? like excitement from meeting someone new or going out with friends - please tell me you are doing just a little bit of that or you will have no choice but going out with me this weekend.” warning with a finger pointed in bexs direction, dare the other ask juno her life some what revolved around work as most of her nights were split between that and going out with co-workers. “well that’s exciting, what’re your thoughts on him? do you – like that there’s less scowling going on? and lovesick is definitely a word to use… well to be frank i’m not human so it should be something i’m above.” the fae winked playfully, of course she heard a rumor there was a human somewhere in someone’s line of her family.

The shapeshifter laughed, shaking her head slightly. “Oh, I go have drinks with my friend Tony or meet up with my friend Gray sometimes. His brother Danny is lovely well and manages their family bar so I do love to stop in and have a chat with him as well. Or I visit with Victor- he’s the sourpuss of a cop I mentioned but we’ve got a good rapport down.” Of course the most complex of the relationships she had just mentioned was the one she had with Victor but she wasn’t even entirely sure what to call the dynamic they had- so simply saying they spent time together was the easiest way to go about it. “Oh, don’t get me wrong- I became quite accustomed to his scowling and contrary attitude but he’s far more pleasant to be around now. I’m rather enjoying his change in attitude. He’s still rather sour to most people though. His circle of people he seems to enjoy being around is rather limited. And I do mean lovesick when I talk about Tony. The man has been basically head over heels for his girlfriend from the moment he laid eyes on her. It’s sort of adorable really.” Bex waved a hand at the notion of someone being above jealousy simply because they weren’t strictly speaking human. “We’ve all got human qualities inside of us. It’s why we can blend in so well with them. We’re just…I guess sort of advanced humans one might say.”

It was ironic for a person with so many trusting issues, he was very comfortable with her and how close she was to him. Bex wouldn’t hurt him, he didn’t have a real affirmation of her but he still oddly trusted his instincts. “If you did, I don’t think it would be an accident, you are far more skilled to accidentally slit my neck open. But you would miss my visits, and these moments.” He moved his bottom lip and causing a little sting before kissing her thumb.

“I think you know by now that I won’t” He let her move his head from side to side. Victor smirked and shrugged “I have told you before, I’m a feline person, cats seemed to enjoy my presence.”

“You trust me that much, mon cheri?” The shapeshifter raised an eyebrow in question, all too comfortable with teasing him. She had always done so, even when he scowled at her very presence but it was different those days. Before he replied with a dark stare and a dismissive tone. Now he rose to the occasion as though a part of him actually enjoyed it. Perhaps a part of him did. “And what moments might these be consider, cheri? You coming in and attempting to steal my cat while I am kind enough to feed you?” she teased, inching ever so slightly closer, tilting her head up to touch the tip of her nose to his even while she still held his chin between her fingers.

“Is that what is it?” Bex questioned, an eyebrow raised, her free hand coming up and gently brushing her fingers down the side of his cheek. “I think you’re just trying to steal him away from me,” she accused though the teasing was evident in her voice. “But I think, darling, it’s more that you enjoy the presence of cats. Why else would you spend your time with a giant one?”

“That seems like a unique hobby, but I will keep that in mind if we get a call about a man going upside down from a tree.” Victor have heard about quirky people but that was a new kind of quirky for him.

He saw her hand and raised an eyebrow, but since she changed the subject, he figured it was just her trying to tease him as always “Not really”. Victor wasn’t expecting her to cook for him, but he was more than happy to try out her cooking and just enjoy that she was doing something especially for him. “Sure, I would like that. So how was your day?”

The way he watched her hand move wasn’t lost on her- she noticed far more things than she expected even Victor knew. “What was with that careful examination of my movements? Did you think I was going to cut your neck open with my claws, cheri?” the shapeshifter teased, lifting her hand back up and taking his chin between her thumb and index finger, the nail of her thumb pressing firmly against his bottom lip, not enough to truly hurt but perhaps hard enough to give the tiniest of stings. “And what if I accidentally slit one of those lovely big veins open? You’d bleed out all over my kitchen floor and I’d so miss your normally scowling face.” Not that she would ever dream to do anything of the sort. If anything she was overly cautious around him, both of her claws and of her strength. Because as tough as Victor could be? He was still human.

“I’m no master chef like you, but I can hold my own- so no judgements,” Bex warned, using her grip on his chin to shake his head gently from side to side as though to emphasize her point. Not that she thought he would judge unless she gave him food poisoning- something she had never done with anyone in the past. Not that she often had cause to cook for other people. Not that many people stuck around for such mundane things. Tony might but that was different. He was sort of like extended family. “My day was entirely uneventful and boring. Evidently no one needed bail today so I was at home with that furball who enjoys your company so much more than he enjoys mine.”
