We still put children in jail for being late to class

Across the country, thousands of kids are still thrown in juvenile detention for violations known as “status offenses” — offenses that wouldn’t be considered crimes if not for the age of the offender. 

A new report by the Vera Institute of Justice shows that 100,100 kids were locked up this way in 2014, the most recent year with available data

They’re the kind of offenses that child psychologists will say are a natural part of growing up. But if you’re black, poor, LGBTQ or female, you often don’t get the benefit of the doubt: You get jail.

Some status offenses, like underage drinking, are crimes. But in some states, talking back to your teacher, disrupting the class or skipping school can be referred to courts for disciplinary action. In Wisconsin, a child can be referred to the court for being late to class five times. Read more (8/8/17)

Fun fact. They can’t miss it, because they were born in captivity as a part of the Species Survival Plan. You can learn about it here https://www.aza.org/species-survival-plan-programs . And if you knew Shasta you’d know that he doesn’t miss the wild and he loves/basks in the easy life here. Also Shasta was gonna be a fur coat. But we saved him. So I don’t think he is missing that either.

When I was in 8th grade a friend of mine and I were fucking around during our study period and he accidentally stabbed me in the arm with a pencil and the pencil was partially stuck in my arm but I was really shy in social situations so I just raised my hand and waited for the teacher to notice which took about five minutes so when he finally asked me what I needed I said “TJ accidentally stabbed me with a pencil a few minutes ago and now it’s hanging out of my arm, can I go see the nurse?”. He freaked out and yelled “OH MY GOD SEBASTIAN WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME RIGHT AWAY?” And I said right back “please don’t yell at me, I have a pencil in my arm, if anyone is yelling it should be me” and that sums up my attitude and personality fairly well tbh
