Among life’s many crossings, one of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that some forms of exposure are like open wounds in the bitter cold: they sting, they crack, and sometimes they bleed.
With time, I also learned that you don’t bleed in public. Sharks always find the scent of blood.
Maybe that’s why I’ve stopped admiring those who turn their own lives into places without boundaries. Some people surrender themselves to the gaze of others more than they need to and, inevitably, they expose those who chose to walk beside them as well.
Today, I’m no longer sure I could be with someone who doesn’t understand the line between what is theirs and what inevitably becomes ours. Because every shared exposure comes at a cost, and the one who pays it isn’t always the one who chose to be seen.
