@bi-con
yeah.
The churidar as a garment probably goes back to the 16th century as does the peshwaj. However 16th and 17th century versions of the peshwaj often have a front opening tunic or overcoat. Later styles are floor length and voluminous and appear to be both front opening and otherwise.
From mid 19th to the late 19th century, voluminous lower garments were in vogue and are probably the precursors of shararas and the like (see for e.g. Beauties of Lucknow or this postcard). However versions of the modern churidar-kurta as well as the costume we generally associate with tawaif culture (e.g. pic 1) can also be seen by the end of the 19th century. The kurta by then could also be worn as a linear tunic with side slits and no front opening all the way through if we take pic 3 as an example. See also Miss Noor Jahan.
Pics: 1. Dancing Girl of Udaipur, 2: Sultan Shah Jahan of Bhopal (see in contrast her mother’s attire), 3. Dancing Girl, Jaipur 4. Muslim Lady, MV Dhurandhar (early 20th century). A little on the transitions in Kathak costumes which rely on the churidar-peshwaj here.
