I may have trauma from parental abuse but tied in is also trauma from natural disasters, being severely ill, verbal abuse (both from parents/siblings and others), poverty, death, isolation, etc. I will say, trauma that occurs at a younger age or that is inflicted by caregivers is typically more damaging- only because of the level of development and attachment. But there are many situations that can mimic that. All in all, not every ‘traumatic’ event will traumatize all people and some will feel so traumatized from unique experiences that they feel alienated from other’s experiences. There’s not any wrong or right way to be traumatized.
If you’re wondering if an event might have been traumatic, you can ask a few questions:
“Did the event make me feel powerless, hopeless, or very desperate?”
“Did I feel death was an imminent threat?” (Threat is the key word here, death does not have to be a real threat for you to fight for survival)
“Did what I was experiencing feel intolerable and escapeable?”
If you said yes and also have/had a sudden change in your behavior, periodic panic even after the threat was gone, disrupted sleep (nightmares or insomnia), etc- that continue for more than two weeks- you might have ptsd. If you experienced this for two weeks or less, you likely experienced trauma without developing ptsd
