I never understood why they always call it radical self love — as if it is radical to be proud of the person you fought the world to become; as if it is radical to believe that you mean something.

The people for me are the messy hearted, the unapologetic, "the true to themselves even when no one is watching" kind of people. The people for me have hearts bigger than their bodies, they have minds larger than their boundaries and their circumstance. See, the people for me are the ones who find light between the cracks of hurt and hope — they are the fighters, the optimists, the people mad enough to believe that being different is actually their biggest asset. The people for me are the expressionists, the feelers, the women and the men who are unafraid of living by their own rules, the human beings who demand more from themselves, the soft souls who never quiet their flame; the ones who only ever encourage themselves to burn, burn, burn.

This year has taught me that life can be kind. That it isn't something I have to outsmart, that it isn't something I have to control at all times. This year has taught me that life can be soft, even when it is not, even when it's edges are rough and it's messy all over — it can still hold a lesson, can still grow me from the inside. See, this year has taught me that life doesn't always have to be cruel, that circumstance can kick you down, but it can never hold you down if you choose to rise. This year has taught me that good things can happen to good people, that life has a way of working out, has a way of piecing itself together if you just give it time, if you just trust in it's process.

You ruin your life by desensitizing yourself. We are all afraid to say too much, to feel too deeply, to let people know what they mean to us. Caring is not synonymous with crazy. Expressing to someone how special they are to you will make you vulnerable. There is no denying that. However, that is nothing to be ashamed of. There is something breathtakingly beautiful in the moments of smaller magic that occur when you strip down and are honest with those who are important to you. Let that girl know that she inspires you. Tell your mother you love her in front of your friends. Express, express, express. Open yourself up, do not harden yourself to the world, and be bold in who, and how you love. There is courage in that.
