What I say: I'm fine
What I mean: I was at a party and I overheard a conversation about GMOs and someone said "Your body doesn't even recognize GMOs as food!" which is one of the single most idiotic statements I have ever heard human beings have been genetically modifying their food since the dawn of civilization (what do you think agriculture and artificial selection even IS???) its just that now science allows us to make plants hardier and resistant to diseases and pesticides and circumvent thousands of years of crop failures and famine like we wouldn't even be able to feed ourselves without GMOs the REAL problem with GMOs is agricultural corporations who sue small farmers when their designer seeds are blown into someone else's fields OR who design their crops to grow without seeds so farmers have to buy seeds from them every year at exorbitant prices and OH MY GOD I am a guest at this house i do not know these people i really just have to keep my mouth shut and rant about this on tumblr instead.
White men are the devil.
As a white man, I can 100% confirm this.
Seriously tho, ALL white men benefit from systematic racism and sexism. No matter how *woke* we are, society constantly tells us that we’re more important than everyone else.
I recently read a post calling out this kind of flippant response. We’re essentially saying “…but I’M one of the GOOD guys! This doesn’t apply to ME!” It still applies.
We’ve all got subconscious biases that affect our interactions. White men have society constantly reinforcing and encouraging our biases. It’s part of who we are, and we need to recognize it. To “be one of the good guys,” we need to listen, educate, and use our privilege to actively support and reinforce the voices and concerns of non-white and non-male people.
TL;DR: Recognize your biases and your privilege. Don’t be dismissive of criticism. Actively educate, advocate, and fight against injustice.
“Who in the world am I? Ah, that’s the great puzzle.”
