Hiii I'm back,
I've noticed something with social media, tiktok and twitter especially have a super bad case of moral panic with little room for nuance and most takes are being spoken by kids 13-16 who don't do or do extremely minimal research often citing (if they do at all) other people or headlines, articles, that are not credited or if they are credited are by people who do not have credentials. I am begging people to do proper research and not base all their opinions on other people without looking at the actual research. To add onto this the reason why I'm saying this is because I am seeing so so many takes that are 1984 adjacent or just outright ripped from the book, which 1984 was a criticism of both Hitler and Stalin, I find the Gen Z moral panic specifically about sex and adulthood so concerning
It's been a while but I am again back and active, here's an art dump
Average fandom-ized "mythology" enjoyer talking about Greek myths like:
"Every woman is a woke girl boss (except Athena because she's a pick me who supports the patriarchy and keeps other women down! Unless we're hip to the super extra Real version where Actually she made Medusa into a gorgon as Protection!!) who's also a poor and helpless victim who never had any power or autonomy and probably also got sexually assaulted (for some reason). Because the more girl boss someone is the more they sit around complaining and doing nothing and just letting bad things happen to them. And are also unable to have normal, consensual sex, so anytime they sleep with someone it has to have been rape or manipulation. (Except maybe if its in a mildly popular f/f ship!) Circe was just a done-wrong feminist who spent her time picking herbs in a utopian commune or something!!
Every man is an evil problematic unforgivable demon abuser and representation of the patriarchy. Yes, even Perseus, who was just a kid trying to help his mom, because Medusa was actually a *Victim* bc Ovid said so and he should have known better but actually he was The Real Monster™️ and also Cadmus who did fuck all and minded his business bc he was probably homophobic or something??(for some reason). Zeus is the most evil of all ofc and everything bad that happens in the myths is his fault bc he's a Misogynist and Abuser™️! Nobody ever slept with him because they wanted to, it was always assault! (Special mode: there's 50% chance Ares is actually a misunderstood feminist golden retriever mama's boy who is super into gay rights and taking trips to the park with his kids, but only if it can somehow mean interpreting Zeus as even worse!)
The only exception is the minotaur! Who should never be called that bc his real name was Asterius and the minotaur was a demeaning insulting title given to him by his Abuser!! He was never actually a monster, that was Minos' fault, and the labyrinth represents the inescapable cycle of abuse! Everyone else in the family loved him except for evil Patriarchy Demon dad! Except maybe Pasiphae but that's because she was Traumatized from being a victim of sexual assault (Zeus is a rapist!) But Asterius is actually a little innocent baby who never did anything wrong and actually represents the dehumanizing effects of racism/abilism/transphobia/etc! Also Theseus was The Real Monster™️ and manipulated Ariadne! (Unless I decide that he and the minotaur were In Love, and then he's a great guy actually.)
And also the gods were all useless and evil and never did anything helpful at all ever and were all abusive parents and rapists and Worst of All got into relationships with Problematic Age Gaps and everyone in ancient Greece hated and feared them and nobody actually revered or worshipped them except when Patriarchy/Capitalism (??) forced them too! Most people just resented them but were helpless to do anything but the Heroes were tough enough to say 'fuck the gods' and the gods couldn't stop them bc they were just too Badass!
I know this is true because some Percy Jackson/God of War fans on social media told me so and anybody who says otherwise needs to Read a Book [worst ya- tized massacre of mythological story you've ever heard of]!!"

Octavius: Okay, I’m going to get the wedding cake. Jedediah: Perfect, while you do that I’ll check on the ring bear. Octavius: … Octavius: You mean ring bearER, right? Jedediah: … Octavius: Look me in the eyes and tell me you are not going to bring a dangerous wild animal to our wedding.
You know what makes this even better the real Jedediah smith got a giant scar from a bear attack in his early 20s
crying sobbing scratching at the walls when will people realize that the ancient greeks did in fact care about morality. they did in fact think about ethics and how that relates to their religion. just because they did not approach these issues like modern monotheists do does not mean they did not care or think about the morality of their gods and heroes.
heracles, for example, very much DID become a moral icon, in the sense that his journey of redemption was moralized. and he was a very spiritually important figure. (edit: I should also add that Heracles' story was morally meaningful to the extent that he was literally syncretized into Buddhist art as a companion of the Buddha). people have this idea that ancient greek moral philosophy can be entirely segregated from "Greek mythology." it's all part of how Christians reinterpreted classical texts and ideas to be more easily consumable from a Christian perspective. Socrates and Plato and Aristotle and the rest are re imagined as basically proto-Christians, completely distinct from those yucky sinful pagan peasants and their demonic unethical false gods!
if you actually explore what ancient Greek religion was like, it's for one extremely diverse, we cannot even know the full extent of the diversity of thought and ideas. everyone should be at least 50% less willing to make sweeping claims about What Ancient Greeks Believed because we are talking about so much history and so many local cultures and so many people. and it's clear that people WERE concerned about morality. that's why doing Very Bad Things like killing a family member was seen as spiritually polluting. people would contemplate and debate why the gods did things that humans found morally bad in myths and would have different explanations for this. just because the gods do not have the same exact relationship to human ethics as the Christian God does, does not mean ancient greeks did not care about ethics and it doesn't mean they didn't have any thoughts on the relationship to the gods and ethics.
perhaps this is a hot take but im starting to feel like if you don't know what "xenia" or "miasma" means in a religious context and you've genuinely never read any research on what ancient greek relationships with the gods actually looked like, if your ONLY knowledge comes from myths and not from the actual sociocultural history of the people who created these myths, maybe you should shut up about what you think the gods mean and what their nature is.
You're really about to lose me if you think someone not violating their morals and values by refusing to vote for fascism in a rigged election is the problem. I hope everyone who voted AT ALL, for Kamala, or "third party", or DT, feels wretched that they stooped so fucking low to begin with. My values don't change every four years, do yours?
Frankly I don't have the energy for this comment right now but please let me know how you're feeling about the world. the election is important and people who don't side aren't fucking neutral you are picking a side, you are choosing to just go along with whatever happens you are as equally bad as trump supporters because you let him win without a fight i hope you feel ashamed
Conspiracy theory: the reason you see so many costume designers give characters in historical films (specifically ones set in in Greek or Roman times) leather arm bracers even tho it’s inaccurate is bc this is the only way they know how to add interest into a design without it looking flamboyant bc they’re too chicken shit to actually make an interesting design, they could add colorful cloaks, long sleeves and even jewelry to add details to the costume design but it would look to feminine to modern ppl and instead of challenging popular perceptions of the time periods they’re depicting they feed into them.

Hi, my name is Mosab , I’m from Gaza, and like many here, I’ve lost more than I ever thought I could bear — my family, my home, my sense of safety, and the simple moments that once gave life meaning. 💔
I’m not writing this to ask too much of anyone. I’m sharing a piece of my story — not because I want sympathy, but because I still believe someone, somewhere, might care enough to listen.
If this message finds you at the wrong time, I understand.
I’m truly sorry if it feels like an interruption.
